I always imagined ungeziefer as some sort of mix between a vermin and a parasite. Imagining Samsa as some sort of insect is a given, vermin gives connotations of a harmful being (causing harm in general) and parasite gives additional connotations of a 'freeloader', someone who only takes from others + harms them by doing so.

Another word that's important is the title itself which admittedly cannot be translated with the connotations the original German word has. Verwandlung is an everyday word, more or less, and it would most people think of a fairy tale, something light and whimsical. Kafka's story in contrast is dark and disturbing.
