Once upon a time

My Loneliness and I

Had a shouting match

In the middle of a crowd.

Years passed

My Quiet stood in front

Shielding me

From fools out to hurt.

Now we walk

Hand in hand

At peace

My Solitude and me.

Maybe centuries,

Strangers us,

Yet here I go...

Touching your heart,

With my words.

...I wouldn't like to snuggle in the arms of my love during a raging storm?

...I wouldn't prefer a strong shoulder to sniffle on?

...I wouldn't love to see a familiar kind face next to mine at the end of each trying day?

....I wouldn't love to look across a party and catch the eyes of one who knows how seriously I'm planning our sneak escape?

... I wouldn't love to hold on tight to an anchoring hand as life buffets me unexpectedly?

I am just another reluctant martyr facing the truth:

The future crouches to leap at me with horrors.

Still in the magic square of my present

I know I would be ok.

And though I know this secret

Isn't it easier said than done?

Wobbling on my tiny square,

I fear it's all a mistake...

Impossible to just stay here...

Impossible to balance on this spire...

Much easier to give in,

drown in the quagmire as always.

And most times, I do...

But just rarely,

I hug myself teetering on my present,

pretend I'm a goldfish...

And once in a while,

If the heavens are kind...

A space forms

just for a few nano seconds...

And the universe takes a breath.

Yet...
