I’m writing this to vent my frustration. I’m genuinely tired and annoyed by how people keep treating historical figures as if they were characters in a silly teenage novel. I’m specifically referring to the ridiculous ships between Robespierre and Saint-Just, or the constant sexualization of historical figures. To me, this is dehumanizing. People seem to forget that these figures were human in every sense of the word: they had thousands of thoughts a day, changed their minds, held prejudices, embraced ideologies, felt fear and hope... They even did mundane things like going to the bathroom. Above all, they were products of their time. We can’t judge them through the lens of our modern morals and ideologies. Every decision and action they took was layered with complexity. Reducing them to heroes or villains strips away their humanity. The mistakes they made are mistakes we likely would have made too, given the same circumstances, because context shapes actions. A clear example is how people treat Marie Antoinette and those around her. They’re harshly criticized and demonized for opposing the revolution and trying to fight it. But what else were they supposed to do? Surrender to the revolution like naïve children? In their shoes, with their beliefs and circumstances, we would’ve done the same. Everything, Marie Antoinette’s supposed betrayal of France, the abuse her son suffered, the hunger and poverty endured by commoners, needs to be examined with nuance. Not to excuse or justify, but to truly understand the complexities of the time.
