Good Friends Are Like Stars

Lemme just start off by saying that Millenniummon looked fucking badass. The sheer scale of that unit, immense. I really, really loved the play on scale here, since we know how big the Chosen Megas also are. That was fantastic designing & representation there. When it was just Wargreymon vs Millennuimmon, you could feel the power in the animation and how it moved. That was excellent.

But, this leads into one of the issues for me.

As soon as Taichi and Wargreymon did their big sacrifice, I had a good idea about how this episode/fight was gonna go. Taichi comes back, big fight, win the day. Easy set up. I was sort of hoping that Yamato and Metalgarurumon would still be around, so that we’d end up at what seemed like the ultimate conclusion to defeat Millenniummon: form Omegamon, like at the fucking beginning of the series.

This didn’t happen. I’m glad it wasn’t technically all just Taichi and Wargreymon, but it really is walking a thin line in that regard.

Also, as soon as the Holy Digimon Mega, the power you feel in the fight goes out the window in the worst way for me. Yes, it’s big and stuff is happening, but it’s slow and just feels...clumsy? Slowing down a fight with massive opponents can work, but it has to have the power behind it and it needs to be utilized well for it all to pay off. In my opinion, it doesn’t hit the mark.

I’ll give them minimum credit here, they tried to include the other kids where it otherwise could have solely been Taichi and Wargreymon. But this is just a massive issue with the Reboot in comparison to og Adventure: the importance of the kids’ strength as a team of equals.

Whether it was VenomMyotismon or Piedmon, or even some of the other adversaries in the series, it was always a team effort. Even when they got separated or split up, they all worked towards the same goal and grew alongside each other. The pacing in Adventure for each kid to have their time was well managed -- which, when you have a cast of regulars this size, you need to do! And Reboot...has not done this and can’t do it, because it wants to elevate one character above the others. Which would work! If we didn’t already know these characters intimately in how they’ve progressed. But we do. We know the bonds, know the learning curves, and by using the same characters in an only slightly altered setting, it’s impossible to not to compare.

Really, considering all the times they’ve been thrown into fights in their lives, going up against Digimon that were fully capable of killing them with a blast of energy or the swing of a limb, a little bit of a close call on the road shouldn’t have seemed like all that much.

“...If it makes you feel any better, I think my bike took more damage than I did,” Yamato muttered, his tone not quite irritated but certainly not as repentant as he likely should have been considering Sora’s overall air of upset. He wasn’t meeting her gaze for more than a second or two at a time, because he knew that this was his fault and it had, of course, given them all a bit of a scare.

More than a bit. 

He should have probably been more shook up about it all, considering, but he’d tangled with death enough that he was rather desensitized by this point. 

“It’s just road rash, Sora, promise. At worst, it’ll scar, but it’s not like I wear shorts very often anyway.”

Letting out a breath, Yamato pushed himself off his spot on the floor, sliding his phone back into his pocket. Most of the floor space was taken over by books and papers in what could really only be described as an organized mess; anyone looking at it wouldn’t be able to tell heads from tails, but he knew where everything was.

More or less.

At least his space was nowhere near as cluttered as Taichi’s always seemed to be, so making a temporary mess didn’t bother him as much as it would have otherwise. 

But, that’s what going out to the movies with Sora was all about -- outside of catching up with her again, of course. A break away from the mess of school work and anything else that required his actual, focused effort to handle. Hanging out with a close friend would be refreshing. Frankly, he couldn’t recall the last time he went out for fun, which meant it was long overdue.

Carefully stepping around the radius of papers, he mentally ticked off in his head what he needed before heading out, the fingers of his right hand idly picking out imaginary notes to some tune lingering in the back of his head. He had his phone, wallet -- just had to grab his keys and shoes, and then he’d be on his way. No stops needed at the store, so it’d be a straight shot, too. Shrugging on his jacket, Yamato gave the place a quick once over to make sure he wasn’t leaving anything behind, and was out the door the next minute.

   Beggars couldn’t be choosers – and in this respect, Finis was certainly a beggar. It wasn’t as if she had any other options! And whether or not his music ‘meshed’ with her hardly mattered. A good singer always blended with their surroundings. Besides… this was just to see if the lines she wrote worked the way she’d intended… it wouldn’t be near as much of a commitment as he seemed to believe… 

   Still – Finis smiled wide, unbothered, light and bright and full. She wasn’t very good at changing other people’s minds, anyway, and she wasn’t quite a leader in any sense… 

   “That sounds lovely! I’d love to hear you play… When is your next practice?” 

“Well, we’ll see if it’s lovely or not,” Yamato shrugged, shoving his phone back into his pocket. 

Practices like this were often a mixed bag. It all depended on what sort of day they all had -- they were still in high school, after all, no matter that they were picking up gigs in the city. Some days were all fiery passion, going at it for hours seriously and sounding pretty damn good. Other days were either more goofing around than he liked, or tempers flaring between them all. Neither of those ended well, if he was being honest; not much got done.

He just hoped they actually felt put together this time around. Even if this was just a casual request from this girl, Yamato took everything he put energy into seriously.

[ 📲 • sms ] : If that’s okay? Otherwise I can take the bus and meet you there. I’ll just need 20 minutes to get ready or a little longer if you’d like me to prepare something. 

[ 📲 • sms ] Is it flattery if it’s true? 🤔

[ 📲 • sms ] : By the sounds of it, it’s probably a good idea. 

[ 📲 • sms ] : How about a comedy then? Something more lighthearted so that your brain doesn’t turn to mush. 😝

[ 📲 • sms ] : I’ll be fine with anything. Just getting to hang out with you will be nice enough for me. 😊 And as long as you’re quiet through the movie, I won’t complain too much, I promise! 😜

[ 📲 • sms ] You’re a saint, Sora. 

[ 📲 • sms ] Hey, listen, me and my limited brain cells are trying their best here! 😩 But laughing at someone else’s problems sounds good. You know me so well.

   Oh, he knew of her! Something gratified and warm spread throughout her chest, edged into the corners of her throat. If he was a stranger, and he knew her, maybe other strangers knew her, too, and maybe that meant that she was doing it. Being remembered. Being huge! 

   “Yes!” A large smile, eyes hidden, and then she relaxed, opened once again in contemplation of his question. “Set up? Hm…” 

   Naturally, she hadn’t really thought that far ahead. But in this case, it was fortunate that she knew immediately where to go. 

   “Anything is fine! I don’t have any sort of band here, so I’m willing to accept anything you think you can offer… I don’t know how much I can pay you, either… I haven’t talked to my guardian about it…” A long pause, and for a second, it sounded as if her words would trail off there, and that would be it… “I wanted to see if you were interested before I asked him! Or if you knew anyone who might be…” Larger smile, eyes once again shrunk behind large dark lashes. 

She seemed rather on the shy side despite all the excitement being conveyed by the smile that had yet to leave her face. Not that he could throw any stones; he was incredibly reserved outside of gigs, and while he wasn’t entirely shy when around friends, he still tended to be quiet until provoked in some way.

It was sort of nice dealing with someone more his social speed for once.

“Well, how ‘bout this? Before we get too serious with the specifics, why don’t you join us for a practice? You can see if our style and the instruments we have will work for you, and then we can do a few test runs of your own music,” Yamato suggested, pulling out his phone to shoot a quick text off about all this to his bandmates.
