Hans Conried in The Gay Falcon (1941)
Bonus:
It took longer than it should have for me to realise none of my maltese falcon headcanons/continuation ideas involve any of the bad guys actually making it to prison and staying there.
I usually imagine Wilmer eventually breaking out and attempting to hunt down everyone else as revenge for letting him be the fall guy(the only one I ever really imagine him successfully killing is Gutman)
I usually imagine o Shaughnessy either somehow being set free on account of self defense or a lack of evidence or something(contrary to popular belief, I'm no fancy law talking guy) or having some kind of powerful connection that gets her out of jail-maybe Cairo if you subscribe to the idea that they're extreme frenemies who were just in a particularly bad spot during the events of TMF, like I'm inclined to
And I usually imagine Cairo and Gutman escaping the police and just carrying on with the search for the falcon(until gutman gets killed by wilmo). Sometimes for drama I imagine Spade catching up with them just before they're out of the country or on a train to the airport or whatever and having some kind of private goodbye with Cairo that gutman never finds out about, but not always
It’s interesting that the 1941 version didn’t include Wilmer shooting Gutman at the end, or like the 1931 version where he shoots both Gutman and Cairo. I would love to see a continuation made where Wilmer hunts down each and every person who let him take the fall (although I couldn’t stand anyone else playing the characters but the ‘41 guys). But I agree, he would never be able to get at anyone else but Gutman
