This week we're taking you on a musical safari into the heart of 1970's Africa. For much of the western world this was the Utopian epoch of peace and love but for Africa this was a time of great political unrest, civil war and social inequality. For many, music became a world of escape and for others it became a powerful vehicle for revolution and a way of getting their voices heard. What followed was a kaleidoscopic explosion of Funk, Afro, Jazz and Pop groups unlike anything the world had heard before; music that was at once furious, politically charged and yet impossibly groovy. 

There are countless names worth mentioning, and you will hear a carefully curated selection in this mix, but one enigmatic man stands out amongst the rest and that is the chief himself, William Onyeabor. William was a pioneer in the electronic music scene, he always seemed to be just one step ahead, but to this day those who seek to learn anything about William remain unenlightened. Sadly the world lost William last week on the 16th of January. This mix pays homage to the prolific genius that is William Onyeabor and the music of his contemporaries.
