So on March 9 at 9pm I boarded a plane to South Africa! I got to the airport at 4:30 thanks to my manager who drove me. I had never been to Heathrow before so once I checked in I wandered around the shopping area and got some snacks for the next 24-ish hours. Then I found a place to sit and charge my phone. Finally after 3 and a half hours they told us the gate and we all rushed to it. On the plane there were little overnight packages with blankets, pillows, headphone and sleeping masks. It was nice to see from an airline even in economy. Virgin Atlantic was actually pretty good, they were very attentive which was nice and gave us food (which was actually decent). Overnight I didn’t really sleep which sucked and then we were there. We arrived to Johannesburg at 10am. At the airport we all unloaded and went through to transfers. I had about 6 hours until my next flight so I just wandered around went through security and sat on the other side. I watched a movie, listened to music, read and relaxed. Since I hadn’t slept much I was exhausted but didn’t want to sleep and miss my flight. Then at 3pm I head down 2 floors to gate E7. Now for people who haven’t been to this airport you need to know something. There’s buses. Buses that drive you out to the planes. So the airport itself is pretty small but then you don’t realize they drive you to your plane. So we all boarded the plane which was very small (only 70 seats). When we were taking off the attendees informed us that we couldn’t move around too much as it could knock us off balance and cause more turbulence. Scary. But it was fine I just sat there for the 2 hour flight. And finally after over 24 hours of travelling I had made it to my final destination. George. I was walking into the airport when I saw my grandparents. I haven’t seen then in about 6 months and I’d never seen them in Africa. It’s not that they had changed a lot but the looked a lot happier and healthier being away from family drama back in Canada. So I grabbed my suitcase and we left. We went straight to dinner at a restaurant called 101 Meade. Which was AMAZING. Now since I was just off the plane and tired, hungry and all be it a little cranky. I opted for plain steak. My grandpa had Fish and my grandma had Zebra. I tried hers and it was delicious! I’d definitely order it next time. Then for dessert I had a vanilla creme brulee, my grandma had a chocolate fondant cake and my grandpa had cheese cake. Everything was excellent (the pictures above are my dinner and mine and grandma’s dessert)! Then we came home and basically went to bed. It was the perfect start to my 2 weeks in Africa!
