This year, I have the opportunity of working on a research project on the topic of individuals’ experiences in leaving cults/new religious movements. I am interested in understanding the different types of social experiences people have after leaving cults/new religious movements in order to find more practical ways to help support people during the readjustment process. I have created a survey to ask about these social experiences, which has been approved by the Institutional Review Board at Duke. This electronic survey consists of yes/no, multiple choice, and scaled questions, and it is open to anyone who is a former member of a cult or new religious movement. The survey will be completely anonymous and does not collect any identifying information. The link to the survey is: https://duke.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_0NAzdVBgknVpEfX
This survey is open to anyone who is a former member of a cult or new religious movement. Please feel free to share the link.

A UK national magazine is looking for a female ex-member of a cult to speak out about their experiences in a thoughtful, sensitive feature aimed at raising awareness. The woman will be given a full read-back of the piece so that she is entirely happy with what will appear in the magazine. There will also be a generous fee. This piece is on a tight deadline so if you are interested, please get in touch with Isolde Walters on [email protected].

Cults, racism, doublespeak and the search for justice A one-day conference exploring two important issues - extremist political cults and how to combat them, including a discussion of possible legal remedies; and an update on the institutional barriers faced by the Jeremiah Duggan campaign. PARTICIPANTS In alphabetical order : Dr Masoud Banisadr, PhD The son of a prominent Iranian family; Masoud Banisadr entered radical political activity in 1978 while pursuing his graduate studies in Engineering-Mathematics in UK. The group he affiliated with, the Mojahedin-e Khalq (MeK), played a prominent part in the mass demonstrations and paramilitary activity that led to the 1979 overthrow of the Shah. At first, to recruit new members, MeK supported Ayatollah Khomeini and the new establishment, then on 20th June 1981 organized a failed uprising to overthrow the government. Thereafter, MeK changed into a clandestine terrorist group and Rajavi, MeK’s leader, and many high-ranking members escaped to France. However, Rajavi, failed achieving any of his objectives, soon underwent a radical transition into a cult leader. Members of the group gradually surrendered all the powers of independent judgment to his growing megalomania. By the late 1980s, under Rajavi’s ‘Ideological Revolution’, MeK members were compelled to divorce their spouses and give up their children and live celibate for the rest of their life. In 1986,Masoud Banisadr became the representative of the group to UN agencies and human rights organizations, and later their representative in the United States, a sort of unofficial ambassador of MeK. He escaped MEK in June 1996. He wrote a memoir of his experiences entitled, ‘Masoud: Memoirs of an Iranian Rebel’, in 2004. Since then, he has been active in exploring and explaining cult manipulation and has written many articles in Farsi and English about cults and their mind manipulation, including his 2014 book, ‘Destructive and Terrorist Cults: A New Kind of Slavery’. With the help of few ex-MeK members, he has established a group called RIDC (Research Institute on Destructive cult) in the United Kingdom to inform cult members and ex cult members about destructive cults and how to face post-cult problems. He also studies the spread of conspiracy theories. Since the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, Berlet has often appeared in the media to discuss extremist news stories. He was a senior analyst at Political Research Associates (PRA), a non-profit group that tracks right-wing networks.
Berlet, a paralegal, was a vice-president of the National Lawyers Guild. He has served on the advisory board of the Center for Millennial Studies at Boston University, and currently sits on the advisory board of the Defending Dissent Foundation. The German authorities decided it close the case. It took years of legal battles to have the case investigated. The OLG Frankfurt (Higher Regional Court) ruled in 2012 that the police had failed and ordered that an investigation take place as a matter of urgency, including possible “collective harming.” The results have been disappointing. Erica has sent a letter to President Angela Merkel accusing the State of Germany of Institutional Racialism, but no answer has yet been received. The Jewish Board of Deputies have also written to complain to the German President about how the same detective who failed to investigate twelve years ago has been brought back to deal with the investigation. In the UK, the first Inquest in 2003 ruled that Jeremiah had died “in a state of terror.” The second Inquest into the case was opened in 2011 and is scheduled to take place from 19 to 21 May 2015. The Justice for Jeremiah Campaign supports an attempt to work through the law in the interest of Justice, to expose the dangers that threatened Jeremiah. Much has been uncovered about the dangers of the LaRouche organization, a vehemently anti-British, anti-Semitic cultic network. How do cults attract and manipulate their followers? In this film we find out, through the disturbing experiences of director Samuel Stefan and six others who have freed themselves from cults: Jill Mytton (The Exclusive Brethren), Jim Bergin and Judy Garvey (The Gentle Wind Project), Lea Saskia Laasner (The Janus Project), and Celeste Jones and Amoreena Winkler (The Children of God). Analytical insights into the cult experience are provided by leadership expert Betty Sue Flowers; Benjamin Zablocki, chair of the Department of Sociology at Rutgers University; UCLA Professor Emeritus Bertram Raven, an expert on interpersonal influence and social power relationships; psychotherapist Miguel Perlado, who specializes in cult-related problems; and Urs Eschmann, a specialist in legal issues involving cults. Using a technique called ‘love-bombing’ cults prey on the vulnerable, recruiting new members with love and warmth. After a period of brain-washing, members are forbidden to leave, enslaved through psychological control, and in Samuel’s case, even violence. He was finally able to escape in the dead of night, persued by other members and seek help.

Optomen TV is currently producing a new documentary series about sects and new religious movements within the UK and would like to speak to anyone with experience of such groups. If you or anyone you know was, or perhaps still are, involved with one of these groups we’re keen to hear from you. You can contact us in the strictest of confidence at [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> and any personal details you give will be used in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998 and only for the purpose of producing this programme.
Alexandra Stein will be teaching a 12-week class on the Social Psychology of Cults and Totalitarianism at the Mary Ward Centre in Bloomsbury starting September 25, 2014 from 2.00 pm - 4.00 pm.
This interdisciplinary course will examine the phenomena of cults and totalitarian regimes - closed, hierarchical systems led by charismatic, authoritarian leaders. Using in-depth case studies, we will use a variety of theoretical approaches to understand these systems, in addition to reading narrative and literary accounts. We will explore the processes of recruitment, conversion, conformity, commitment and disaffiliation, with a particular emphasis on understanding the extreme obedience found in these systems. This course will examine commonalities between cults and totalitarian systems including: the effects on personal life and relationships, social networks, a shared absolute ideology, and charismatic relationship between leader and followers.
