Whenever I see a post about a 12-step program on tumblr dot com it is always the most reductive, bad faith, adolescent take in the entire world. “It’s deeply religious” it’s not, the whole higher power thing is fully and 100% up to you, you can make your higher power nature or the flying spaghetti monster if you want it’s meant to get you outside of yourself so you can see yourself as a part of something bigger “it’s a 100 year old program” ok and do you know that every single 12 step group is run differently, yes they’re all the same 12 steps and traditions but each individual GROUP is run different “courts mandate it people have to choose between 12 step and going to jail” ok and do you know that the program is customizable and adaptable to what works for you it’s not like you’re in a classroom it’s not a school with one single way of doing things, you’re meant to make your program work for you which is a lot of freedom compared to the alternative being jail “the program works for very few people” interesting because there are millions of people in different 12 step programs worldwide who have decades of sobriety because of the structure and support of their fellowship, like hello? And then there’s always inevitably someone calling it a cult which is wild because there is no single leader of any 12 step program, period. People love to be so loud about things they really and truly know nothing about
