When you have an incredible mural partner, a mask turned accidental blindfold isn’t a huge deal. 📸 by @arrogantworm The diversity we are so lucky to be surrounded by on New York City sidewalks and subways is one of my favorite aspects of the city. I turned my sketches from over the years on trains and in parks into a mural of our lives pre-COVID. Imagining the level of detail I wanted to portray in this second mural of the series at Accenture NY, I realized I would need to experiment with new, much larger and more portable materials. Each person was painted individually and then I assembled the crowd on site with @enjoymyeye. During a little art escape upstate in the forest with @natmatsky and @balintzsako I painted these larger than life people. Hopefully one day in the the future we will be able to see everyone’s beautiful faces from around the globe in this lovely city. The first in a series of murals I’ve had the pleasure to create @AccentureUS: Map of Greenwich Village. Over the course of a few days this past spring @enjoymyeye and I donned multiple masks and a multitude of scarves for our first real forays into the world post lockdown. Seeing NYC after a few months from dozens of stories in the sky was like seeing it for the first time. The light at Accenture is particularly beautiful and I hope those that see this work find joy in the reflections of paint which represent the brilliance this city has had to offer throughout time. A bit about this work: New York City is a place rich in cultural creators both past and present. Pockets of the city like Greenwich Village, where one can simply walk down the sidewalk to meet with inspiration, attract likeminded artists and inventors. It is an area that has been the home or workplaces to greats like Nikola Tesla, Anaïs Nin, Edna St Vincent Millay, and James Baldwin. This Map of Greenwich chronicles the blocks where contributions were envisioned, depicted in colors and lines that represent each. The piece is a sort of snapshot in time, however, as new works and new thoughts emerge and evolve our city. I’m incredibly lucky to have had a number of dream projects over the last few years and this is one. I illustrated the cover and interior works for Quarantine Atlas- a book which shows maps and essays detailing peoples’ quarantine experiences from across the world. “In April 2020, Bloomberg CityLab journalists Laura Bliss and Jessica Lee Martin asked readers to submit homemade maps of their lives during the coronavirus pandemic. The response was illuminating and inspiring. The 400+ maps and accompanying stories received served as windows into what individuals around the world were experiencing during the crisis and it’s resonant social consequences. Collectively, these works showed how coronavirus has transformed the places we live, and our relationships to them. The result is an enduring visual record of this unprecedented moment in human history. It is also a celebration of the act of mapping and the ways maps can help us connect and heal from our shared experience.” Available for preorder and released by @bdlev on 4/5/22. Cities left to depict on my very massive map for @ballotbox. It’s been a contemplative time painting and drawing lines. Realizing I have had the privilege to live in a number of regions of this country and can understand mindsets within many. Watching and listening to the news is so ugly these days and I’m over the finger pointing. Empathy is what we need right now. Transparency and responsibility of our officials, sure, but let’s try to get back to the understanding we are one country. No one is lesser. We are all different. This year I worked on expanding hedonistic pleasure in my art practice and this series is the result. This is encompassed in staring at plants, whittling, throwing around colored water, and looking back at the value of old archived paper.
