Also you don't hit a certain age and suddenly you turn queer, it is something you discover overtime and it's different for every person.

Another thing is that queer people have existed for as long as humanity has existed. Just because it was the 50s and homophobia was rampant does not mean homosexual people didn't exist, it just means they had to hide. But having to keep their sexual preferences from public eyes doesn't make an individual less queer.

Jack actually has two twin daughters, Catherine (Cathy) and Elisabeth (Lizzie) Merridew.

Elisabeth is Jacks favourite, as she has always been more active and she took interest traditionally considered masculine, mainly sports and cars, so she grew a closer bond to her father. While Catherine enjoyed hobbies that were considered more calm and feminine, such as baking or dressing up, so she gravitated more towards her mother.

When the twins turned 12, Jack and Isidora finally split up. After years of being in a marriage where they clashed often, yet stayed together for the sake of their children, Isidora finally took the iniciative to leave Jack after suspicious of him comitting adultery.

The process of divorce was messy and complicated for everyone in the family, reaching the agreement to split custody. Yet due to Isidoras work as a flight attendant required her leaving the place for days, the twins mainly stayed with their father.

By that time Elisabeth was not only processing the divorce, but also going through puberty and facing bullying in the hands of her classmates. All this emotions developed in a deep anger directed at anyone that made her feel insecure, or was confident in themselves in a way that made her reflect on herself. Ending up utterly alone and bitter at the world around her. And while jack tried to be as supportive as possible, his lack of knowledge on how to properly help her daughter long term left a bridge in their relationship.

Meanwhile Catherine had a different approach to the divorce, she already had a support system in the form of Isidora and her friendgroup, a typical popular mean girl social circle, where the fun of it all was in making fun of others for being different; clearly a mechanism for her own issues. Cathy blamed the divorce on Jack, and started becoming purposefully antagonistic towards her father, the only authority figure she does not respect.
