Just realized that I’ve been studying French for 8.5 years now. And I applied for PhD programs to study French for another 5-8 years.
It's been a decade now, guys. And I'm teaching French at a prestigious university. What.

Everything in my personal (/creative) life and in my academic life is leading me to Ambroise Paré. I got to handle one of his complete works at Columbia University's rare books library today and it was honestly such an amazing experience.
En Anglais, on ne dit pas “quatre vingt dix neuf”, on dit “ninety nine” qu'on pourrait traduire comme “Hurr durr, regardez mois, j'ai un système de numérotation fonctionnel” et je crois que c'est magnifique.

Honestly, as a German I can not quite understand the obsession of the English speaking world with the question whether a word exists or not. If you have to express something for which there is no word, you have to make a new one, preferably by combining well-known words, and in the very same moment it starts to exist. Agree?
Deutsche Freunde, could you please create for me a word for the extreme depression I feel when I bend down to pick up a piece of litter and discover two more pieces of litter?
um = around
die Welt = world
die Umwelt = environment
ver = prefix to indicate something difficult or negative, a change that leads to deterioration or even destruction that is difficult to reverse or to undo, or a strong negative change of the mental state of a person
der Müll = garbage, trash, rubbish, litter
-ung = -ing
die Vermüllung = littering
ver- = see before
zweifeln = to doubt
-ung = see before
die Verzweiflung = despair, exasperation, desperation
die Umweltvermüllungsverzweiflung = …
This is a german compound on the spot master class and I am LIVING
German has a prefix for WHAT now??
ver-:
a prefix characterizing the word as negative or difficult
a prefix denoting a movement of the object
a prefix denoting that the object is provided with something
a prefix describing a (mostly negative) transition of the object into a state, which is indicated by the stem of the verb (up to its destruction)
a prefix describing misconduct or malfunction of the object
a prefix indicating a faulty action (best example: sich verlaufen = to get lost; derived from laufen = to walk, to run; sich = indication of a reflexive verb
a prefix that determines that a strong, hard-to-make change has a strong influence on the physical or mental state of someone or something (best example: sich verlieben = to fall in love; derived from lieben = to love)
a prefix having no special meaning in many verbs, equivalent to the English for- (e.g. forgive)
how i imagine it went
Dante: okay so this is hell and obviously satan is at the center, and he stands for betrayal because that is the worst of sins
14th century Italian editor: naturally
Dante: and judas is in the mouth of satan himself. he represents the ultimate betrayal because he killed jesus
14th century Italian editor: this all seems very normal and catholic
Dante: also brutus and cassius are there because they killed julius caesar
14th century Italian editor: julius caesar the pagan
Dante: i like him
14th century Italian editor: julius caesar who is also explicitly and canonically in hell
Dante: …
14th century Italian editor: …
Dante: …
14th century Italian editor: so, just to be clear, the center of hell is reserved for the man directly responsible for the passion of our lord, and also two senators of possible dozens who killed a pagan dictator. and they’re all in satan’s mouth. together. equally.
Dante: ok, ok
Dante: when you put it like that
Dante: Satan should really have three different mouths

Indeed, research into the literature of the Middle Ages is more akin to adventure than it is to a specific quest: less directed towards a determinate goal than exhilarated by the variety of encounters on one's path.
