I am a father, I have pounded steel on an anvil and done delicate electronics work, I have turned beautiful pieces on a lathe and marshmallows over a fire, I studied physics in university and have done back breaking physical labour. Well, as National Coming Out Day comes to a close, I find that I couldn't find a subtle way of coming out that most people wouldn't understand. So instead I started the hardest process: I started coming out to members of my family. I did get far, two cousins who were both a relatively safe bet (one of whom came out to me in return) and the hardest today, one of my sisters. It wasn't ideal, and she asked inappropriate questions, but I blame the heteronormative society we've been raised in instead of her. I don't know if I'm prepared to come further out of the closet, but I've taken another step.
