Is Daddy kink getting more popular around these parts, or is it just me? It seems to be casually popping up in lots of multi-chapter fics in a way that I’m just glossing over at this point, where six months ago, I would have been like “whoa.” Weirdly, I even forgot that I put a tiny daddy kink reference/joke in my own fic. 

But what IS it and why does it work for some people?

Obviously the term is loaded. And for a long time I felt super weird about using it or even having the feeling that it was somehow hot. But after having some good, open convos with my partner about praise kink/good girl stuff (another extremely popular thing in the reylo fandom), he sent me a piece (really a personal essay, I guess?) that explains the “little” headspace and how it intersects with “daddy.” And boy, did that turn on a light bulb for me.

For me, it’s less about the literal “father-ness” of the term and more about being praised and validated and feeling taken care of by someone older, with some authority. It might be completely different for you! It’s interesting that even among fairly kinky people, this one can be a little controversial and I understand why. But once I was able to separate the parental/underage connotation of the word from the why, it kind of clicked for me. Anyway, sorry for the overshare, here are the recs:

Here are some fics that incorporate daddy kink that I would give a thumbs up to if you’re daddy-kink-curious. I’ve tried to pick things that don’t necessarily incorporate underage or bad kink practices (so no dark fics here). This can be a slightly intimidating thing to search for, so I thought a list might help:

Minus 1 | @ever-so-reylo  I’ve rec’ed her fics so many times this week that I look like an obsessed fan and I’m a bit embarrassed, but this piece is so great and probably an awesome place to start if you’re like “maybe I’m down for this?” I know it slayed a bunch of people.

Pliable | vuas This one-shot is about Rey reckoning with her daddy kink and her feelings around communicating about it. Also wrote the classic Almost Asleep.

Comments Section | epne Cute one-shot where daddy kink comes up in the safe confines of a devoted reylo thing.

In Other Words | @gopherbroke and @kylotrashforever There’s a chapter in this fic (I believe it’s Chapter 20, in case it didn’t link correctly) where the mini-AU is a total daddy kink scene. It’s pretty literal, in that it’s a babysitter/divorced dad scenario, but it’s probably a good “Am I into this?” litmus test. (Reader, I was into it.)

Inked | @kylosspaceprincess Very fluffy fic with some light daddy stuff in the last posted chapter. Again, very “safe” if you’re unsure. 

Set For One Fall | @polkadotdotdotreylo I’ve already rec’ed this one, but I’m including it here as a good example of daddy kink coming up in a multi-chapter fic as a “oh, hey, this is interesting…” element of a new relationship and not as a huge plot point.

I deliberately picked fairly… “soft” choices in the above post, but I received some replies and messages about a few key favorites in this…genre and wanted to expand:  

Give Thanks with a Grateful Heart | @foxesdance  This is apparently the fic that “started it all” for a lot of us. I didn’t include it in the original post because I’d searched the plain-old “daddy kink” tag to jog my memory, and it wasn’t tagged that way. It’s also, maybe, a little bit of an unusual set up in that it’s a pretend relationship plot, where things are played for kind of comedic effect. I re-read this one today, and oh yes, it all came back to me. (Thanks for the reminder @safetythirst)

The Sacred Texts | @eskaywrites and @thewayofthesith It was some kind of reylo miracle today, when I finally connected with one of the authors of this amazing fic on tumblr (who also mentioned Give Thanks). I have wanted to post about The Sacred Texts forever, and I’m sure I will in the near future. And Hard for Justice. Oh my. Anyway, this fic has insane smut in it. It’s one of my go-to recs when people are like, “please just give me smut.” There are some solid daddy kink moments in here.  

Little Scarlet | @bettsfic This was suggested by @millyslitterbox and @pacificwanderer and I just read it and…um, thank you both. This is a one-shot and I’d say it’s probably great if you’re like “yep, I’m into this and I want more.” Also, points for negotiating boundaries beforehand. I really love to see that in fics. A+ rec.

Mmmm, I think they will move in together, like, three weeks after they meet? And that’s it. Then they are together forever. I know I usually like to write Reylo as emotionally constipated, and I promise my miscommunication kink is still there, but I feel like in the Good scenario they actually know that they’re in love and loved back immediately. They even *gasp* say ‘I love you.’ Verbally. With their words. Maybe not a whole lot, but every once in a while. And the rest of the time they show it with little stuff, like maybe Rey packs lunch for Ben so that he remembers to eat and he buys her a million different types of fancy teas and leaves them around the kitchen. One night Rey picks up Ben at his office because she’s in the area or something, and Phasma rides the elevator with them for, like, 3.5 seconds and witnesses the lurve, and then she walks home fist pumping because she just knew that they were going to be perfect for each other.

They’re about to figure out why they keep snuggling in their sleep, spontaneously making out, using endearments and gazing at one another. @Akosmia’s darling, so it goes is so special, y’all don’t even know. SWOONY. (WIP)

*faux-cousin-cest/mutual pining/desperately trying to remain ethical/soulmark soulmates? Sign me UP! Angsty Ben tries to keep himself from Rey but girl is long gone in love with him. Fending her off never looked so hot. Come read @aldeeraan‘s if you’re not made for me, why did we fall in love?   LOVELY. (WIP)

*ghost story/meet-cute/haunted romance with a terrifying name? Give it to ME! Haunted Ben wants to unload his inherited mansion and Rey’s company is given salvage rights. What she finds instead is this cute man’s heart among the wreckage. @lachesisgrimm/olga_theodora is writing something stunningly creepy in walk the halls (climb up the walls). Just in time for HALLOWEEN! (WIP) 

*desert noir/sweaty mutual pining/Bonnie & Clyde/True Romance? Hell YEAH! Kylo Ren on the lam from Snoke meets runway Rey with a working vehicle and they road trip while eyeing one another as they fall in love, set against a painted desert backdrop. @newerconstellations steer from the passenger side  is a slow burning river of passion that cuts a groove deeper than the Grand Canyon. GORGEOUS. (WIP)

*A/B/O dynamics between two alphas with a fluffy ending? From @malevolent-reverie?! <Are you making this up, Berry?> Grumpy, needy Alpha Ben finds out his Familiar is feisty, independent, educated Alpha Rey and their love story, though riddled with challenge is the spicy, well-matched, perfectly-completed material I read fic for. Airibus Teneo Lupum is one delicious ride with a satisfying, giddy ending.  FANTASTIC. (COMPLETE)

She writes one shots and I swear to God, she might be the best one doing so in The History of AO3. Technically amazing, grammatically proficient, romantically-minded, her 20 works are devoted Reylo, idealized yet imperfect characterizations of the OTP we all love.
