Recent purchasesââ Iâve fully embraced having a mix of blue and white Penguin Moderns now. I got a good deal from the independent bookshop near the university for the David Foster Wallace reader but Iâm not going to dive into it yet, Iâm keeping on with reading non-male writers for now đ

Mr Darcy: says anything
Elizabeth Bennet:
reading a lot of classic lit is like being friends with a bunch of straight girls, loving and supporting them, but watching in quiet horror as they make horrible decisions, both romantically and otherwise. likeâŚ. juliet sweetheart i fully support your quest for the montague dick, but letâs make sure romeo has the message before we fake-kill ourselves, okay? messengers can be shitty in this day and age. and cathy, look. youâre kind of the worst, but you still deserve better than heathcliff. get your associateâs, be nicer to edgar, and move out of that town, ok? and donât die and leave your daughter in the clutches of your evil ex while youâre at it. narrator of rebecca⌠first off bitch weâve been friends for years, tell me your name⌠second, PLEASE LEARN SOME SELF-LOVE AND SELF-CARE!!!!! YOU ARE A VIBRANT CREATURE KNOWN AS WOMAN, YOU DO NOT NEED A MAN TO BE WORTHWHILE!!!! and as for jane eyreâŚâŚ.. bitchâŚâŚâŚ i mean donât get me wrong i love all of you and would die for any of you, any time, and please believe i say this with the utmost affection, but ALL OF YOU BITCHES ARE SO EXHAUSTING. OH MY GOD.
except you, lizzy bennet, youâre an angel and iâm thrilled that youâre here.
my prof, a fool: and in the 1995 bbc adaptation of pride and prejudice, you'll see that darcy is often presented with water symbolism--the bath scene, emerging from the pond--and, given this, we can deduce that this means-
me, an intellectual: that bbc knew what they had with colin firth and did us all a solid

just a note:
never feel guilty for reading âtrashâ. recently Iâve got some flak for reading The Good Doctor by Juno Dawson because itâs a Doctor Who book aimed at children/teenagers of a low reading standard. (Itâs awesome and cool though, and Dawson is an LGBT activist for Stonewall, so, like, support her work and shit).
I, honestly, donât understand how people can think that reading something that isnât a divine literary being is a bad thing? sometimes we need a break: this week Iâve been reading Confessions of an English Opium Eater, and that shit is so heavy (and bad, DeQuincey is a wannabe Wordsworth and you can fight me on that).
Consequently, Iâm currently in the Waterstones cafĂŠ awaiting an email that my copy of Molten Heart is ready. I can finish these books in 6 hours tops, and it makes me feel accomplished, especially when Iâm bogged down in intense literary works for university.
so, yeah, âtrashâ and âchildrenâs booksâ are perfectly acceptable to read, as they ground us if weâre focusing on âhigh literatureâ and the brain power and desperation we feel when reading them.
if you shame people for reading stuff they enjoy (Iâm a massive doctor who nerd, if you couldnât tell), youâre a dick. let people enjoy shit.
oh, and Iâm gonna review everything I read for this blog. I donât know about you lot, but I think itâs a nice way to look back and see what I liked/hated. cool.
John Keats, To Autumn, 1820.
