i’ve always loved the league of gentlemen, so my enjoyment of this film was almost inevitable, even if only due to nostalgia. 

while the trope of characters meet writers is overused, cliched, and easily mediocre, the league make an original and enjoyable interpretation using their notably unique recurring characters. while i loved to see the return of most of the characters, i did hope a few that never came (ross gaines mainly.) HOWEVER, i thought their inclusion of themselves didn’t feel cliched, more so with a hint of knowing irony. 

despite the unmissable under/overtones of problematic jokes, the film is still very enjoyable, and the league of gentlemen’s characteristic humour is evident throughout. even the one off jokes have their familiar vibe, which i thought was really fun. 

while not a perfect film by any means, i loved the return of the league!

don’t know if i was tainted by the excitement of the cinema experience, but i loved this film! olivia colman was brilliant as expected, and the chemistry with benedict cabbagepatch was obvious. the vibe was very fun, and clever, but not in a snobbish way. the palette of the film was beautiful and aesthetically very interesting. also theodore shapiro will always cook with the soundtrack, loved the big thief inclusion.

despite the slightly offputting nature of the film’s constant sexuality, i think the vulgarity is what really makes the film such a relatable experience for teenagers. obviously not everyone’s going to malia when they’re seventeen, but the jokes and the way they communicate is actually an accurate depiction of teenagers. particularly important in a world full of representations like riverdale and whatnot. also lots of fun!!

this film is even worse than the first one. 

in a failed attempt to be somewhat politically relevant, the film becomes unnecessarily convoluted and mind-numbingly boring for the larger part of it. even the supposed "action" scenes are littered with irrelevant, exposition-y, uninteresting dialogue. the proposed relationships are tiresome and filled with unnecessary romantic subplots between literally. every. character. for no real narrative purpose. 

even callum turner and his brilliant nose can't save us now.

objectively not a good film and its ties to jk rowling are nothing less than problematic, but the sheer nostalgia of my childhood obsession with harry potter and unrivalled whimsy of eddie redmayne made it a somewhat enjoyable watch. also fascinating aesthetically.

i had very high hopes for this film, as i loveee the books, but i felt it was, inevitably, netflixified. the dialogue felt a bit exposition-y and didn’t have the same charm as the novel. HOWEVER, it was still a very fun, playful sort of a romp. 10/10 for evil david tennant though.

i LOVE this film. obviously i am very biased bc edgar wright is my favourite director of all time. also watched this instead of studying for my english exam so 10/10 procrastination tactic 

i loved the cgi/video game elements i thought they really solidified the loser teenage vibe they were aiming for. also would not be a proper scott pilgrim review if i didn’t mention the cast and their brilliant chemistry. also awesome that it was really notable as an edgar wright film in vibes without copying all the gags and tricks for the cornetto trilogy but actually establishing its own tone and pace.
