Day Zero: Learning to Die
On Thursday July 9th, it was hot in Edmonton, 34°C outside, and easily over 110°C degrees in my apartment. As my wife sat melting in front of the computer staving off death with the burning desire to finish her school assignment, I sat next to the fan watching her with a blank expression as my brain turned to vapor.
The few synapses that were left firing had a single great thought: Slurpee. And with that I was out the door with a nothing more than a "see yah" to my wife.
[She promptly called me back inside, demanded a kiss goodbye and sent me on my way]
I was too hot to walk the 1 KM and too burnt out to lift my bicycle down from storage, so I decided to dust off ye olde skateboard and 'skate" down to the ESSO, thus the journey begins.
The sidewalk down 99 street was very accommodating. Whether it was my unconventional pushing or my frightened stare, pedestrians and cars made room for me. In an amount of time that can be described as: faster than walking yet slower than biking, I arrived at the ESSO.
I carried the board awkwardly around the store.
Awkward and uncool I filled up two regular size "Cryo's" with blue raspberry sugary goodness, paid with loonies and toonies (as you should) and headed back home.
The way back did not go any better than the way there. At one point: bailing off the board as it smashed into the light post.
When I finally did return home with the melting drinks in hand, my second great thought of the evening crossed my mind: Skateboard is fun (my mind grammar is terrible.)
Instead of the funeral march down to the storage room to return the board from whence it came. I set it firmly by the door, ready to take to work the next day.
Accomplished: Didn't Die.
Lesson Learned: Kiss your wife goodbye.
