I think, what makes Doctor Who so much more painful than other shows is that nobody really dies. There's always a what if at the end of it all. Rose Tyler wasn't dead, but she was locked in a universe unattainable by her Doctor. Donna had these extraordinary experiences and bettered herself and figured out her worth, then she forgot.
