The module 6a materials really made me think about how Black Twitter has changed the way social media represents Black communities. Sherri Williams explains in Black Social Television that Twitter gave everyday people a chance to be heard and even amplified by Hollywood, which is huge because historically, Black voices have had to fight against harmful stereotypes. It also connects to what we’ve been learning in class about culture, identity, and communication. How the media we consume shapes the way we see other people and the world. Seeing how Black Twitter challenged the gatekeepers made me realize how important platforms like this are for giving marginalized communities a voice and pushing for better, more accurate representation. This also influences others to start creating safe spaces like NAMI and Girlfriend Culture, referenced in my other posts.
