IM SO SORRY THIS IS GNA BE CRAZY LONG u can put it in a read more or smth if needed but i have a lot of thoughts abt this
to be honest i think this fandom has a huge puritanical problem with the attitude towards shipping, and have inherited some of the vas and alex's view that all shipping activities in fandom will automatically be 'weird' or ‘degenerate’ even when it's just two characters hugging or something? i can understand nsfw art being something ppl don't want to interact with but the level of avoidance the cast displays is indicative of a lack of awareness of what the actual role of an actor entails, and also betrays a preconception that fandom can't see characters as full and complete people within a story and ALSO ship them together. as if it's one or the other, either character development or romance, without a recognition that both can exist in the same fanwork!! like huh!!
beyond that the reasoning that the vas give is also just sort of hard to justify realistically? for eg ty and spidey both wanted a ban on creating ship art with them, but were also very hand wavy on the specifics (spidey initially said none but then rolled back and said pre breakup adam and evelin is fine, and ty said he dislikes it but simultaneously doesn't seem to care as long as it doesn't affect him), and meanwhile alex was lowkey homophobic when asked about the topic and clamped down considerably more on gay ships compared to straight ones (like the one he literally wrote into the text?). still, shaky logic was interpreted as a blanket ban by many in the fandom… i feel like we forget this show is made by a formerly religious young adult with the (unhealthy) hang-ups to match :/ i don't refer to the stalker type fans that harassed the cast, im fairly certain the vast majority of fans on tumblr dot com aren't chomping at the bit to get alex's approval otherwise they would be on twitter
frankly i don't think this mindset is healthy for fandom because it just results in this weird ‘no homo’ attitude towards depicting characters since everybody is too scared to step over a boundary and get people mad at them. sometimes i feel like I'm back in the hays code bc weed and people dying and body horror and suicide is ok and literally in the source material but dudes kissing or even touching is… somehow not? and this idea that depicting toxic relationships is only super bad if it's a romantic one, so we can just ignore all the messed-up parent-child and platonic dynamics just because they're not of special status somehow?? even if we dig into the bare surface level of jonah and adam as friends for eg, there is SO much that wouldn't fit your dsm definition of healthy, putting aside their obvious cameraderie and chemistry. and that is fine and indeed more interesting than if everybody was on the disney channel!!! this is a horror show where everybody is under constant stress and dying left and right, why would any relationship ever be pinterest ready therapy speak perfect???
idk as an aroace, i see shipping as a vehicle for certain explorations of a person. i see no reason why shipping is inherently evil or that one deserves to be punished somehow for engaging w it. mfw religious trauma show attracts religiously traumatised people > they run to uphold a religiously-influenced arbitrary rule > why am i surprised.
You get one too.
This reminds me of the Mouthwashing fandom and the discourse that went off over there. I guess as a counterpoint that I do find valid as well:
Sometimes shipping should just not be in certain medias.
Mouthwashing is one of those games where there is virtually no reason to have shipping going on, even if you are deeply attached to the characters and the fandom side of things.
Shipping Curly and Jimmy was fine as a crackship, Daisuke and Anya were cute as very close friends, and Daisuke with Swansea would just be all kinds of off putting considering the relationship Daisuke has with him. That isn't mentioning the two other ships that I don't think I need to mention.
The game is rather serious in it's themes, and so to ship in Mouthwashing is a bit distracting from the more important message going on. Fluff and sh*tposting seemed a bit more appropriate.
Main point being: If that was how Alex felt about his own series, that's fair. However, in the manner he created the character dynamics, shipping was inevitable, and really shouldn't have been shunned as hard as it was, whether it was a blanket ban over all or just outright saying, "Don't do that, period."
If you like Jonadam because you like potential bromance or angst, knock yourself out.
If you like Sarah and Evelin because you think they would be sweet and emotionally intimate with each other, but turn to roll their eyes at the boys, then go!
If you like Thatchruth because Thatcher seems like the kind of guy to be a bashful dork around Ruth, and Ruth is his joking support system, then what is stopping you?
These are all just general examples, but truly, what in the world is the harm in doodling and scrawling out ships because you connect with them or just find it cute, even if it is gay?
