Green light new bulbs
I’m moving forward with energy efficient LED bulb replacements for the bathroom vanity. The search began for the right bulb and for the background of the company making the chosen bulb.
The vanity requires a medium (standard) base bulb in globe, decorative G25 format and 40 watts. The current bulbs are warm in color at 2600K, and put out 410 lumens.
I went to a couple websites specializing in light bulbs to find some LED replacement options for the incandescent bulbs, lampsplus.com and 1000bulbs.com. I compared the results there with amazon.com and a couple home improvement stores like Home Depot.
By narrowing to LED bulbs and the wattage, color and lumen range that I was looking for, the options were quickly limited. Ultimately, I landed on a bulb that matched the criteria I was looking for, made by MaxLite, which is US-based and follows Buy American Act and Trade Agreements Act to support certain groups (municipalities, schools, etc) achieve energy efficiency goals.
Dog Gone Bark
When our pup was barking constantly at nothing in particular at all, we knew we needed a solution right away before the neighbors started to complain.
We set out to find an effective and safe (read: painless) way to train our dog to stop barking. Any shock collars or other similar methods were not even an option.
I was absolutely delighted to learn about Elite Little Dog Spray Bark Control collar for so many reasons.
1) It uses citronella spray to discourage barking, which, while an undesirable odor for dogs, is harmless to people and animals.
2) It is sold under the PetSafe brand, which prides itself on its safe pet products.
3) The PetSafe brand is owned by Radio Systems Corporation, which is based in Knoxville, TN and has a consistently high workplace satisfaction rating, no doubt due to the company’s values captured in “THE WILL”.
But does the collar work?
Jump Start
Needing a jump starting for the car is the kind of occasion where a person just wants to solve the problem quickly. Spending a bunch of time trying to figure out which device is the best one for the job can be challenging enough, never mind also trying to “buy on principles” like where the device is made or if the company practices solid ethics.
The topic of this post is a case in point for why I started this effort.
I needed to buy a jump starter for the car because the one I had no longer worked. Because this was not a topic I had researched before, I began a quick but focused search.
I sent out a quick request to some knowledgeable friends to see what they might recommend, but I knew I’d be doing my own homework as well.
Key criteria were that the device should:
Tumblr wins!
I read the Terms and Conditions, and I read the Privacy Policy.
If your eyes are already glazing over due to TL;DR tendencies, the bottom line is that I chose Tumblr for its flexibility, usability (convenience), general casual tone, and its creed, or that of its parent company, Automattic, and the roots of the creed.
So, thanks Tumblr @staff for working for a company with a solid creed.
I found all this information by perusing the T&C and PP before signing up. Do I do this for every Terms popup that I encounter?

Now
From this point (post) onward, what you’ll see is a series of posts that represent my efforts in researching and finding representative examples of products, services and organizations that align to a set of values.
I will describe these values and ideals along the way.
Some will have more background, detail and research than others. That is because of a level of practicality is often required and I can only go so deeply into the research.
Part of the challenge of this project and of embracing the overall dream is that it takes a lot of time and effort to do what I’m trying to do. And, it’s always changing.
But for years, I’ve not started because I could not generate the results quickly enough. I will attempt to leverage some of what I’ve found in the past and update it and pass it forward.
I suspect that if my premise is accurate - that for those who operate based on principles, the results of their labor will be consistent over time - my previous research will not only stand affirmed, but will have been expanded upon over the years.
Please, send questions, offer suggestions and counterpoints, engage. While doing so, be kind to one another.
If this goes as I hope it does, in time I will be leading a team of people replicating these initial efforts and eventually empowering them to embellish and augment the core of this project into a masterpiece greater than I could imagine on my own.
What
We have run out of excuses, and thank goodness for that.
People in the past, with far less information and far less connection to others, have achieved some incredible things. And to be honest, I think we’re running behind schedule on what can be expected of us now.
In 2020, as I write this, our technology allows us to gather and share information faster and to more people that any time in recorded history. I don’t have a citation for that, but I don’t think anyone would argue. If you’re reading this, I think I’ve made my point.
There is a desire in my heart, and I think in the hearts of many others, to exist in a kind of balance with the rest of the world - both with the other people and with the earth itself.
Somehow, despite all the information and tools available to us, we have not found a way to find, much less maintain, that balance.
It’s not for lack of trying. A great many organizations and individual people are doing all they can to bring humanity’s impact on the world into alignment with what it can sustain. But it’s not enough.
I’m not talking just about the environmental impact, although that’s a huge part of it. I’m not talking just about abuses of labor or inequities in employment, although that’s another part of it.
And I’m definitely not just talking about the durability of products or the quality of services in the marketplace, although these points should not be overlooked either.
I am talking about ALL of it.
There have been great strides:
How
It was hard to decide, particularly in previous iterations of this effort, how much of “me” to put into view while generating content.
Should I share the philosophy behind what I am doing? Will that alienate people or draw them in? (Yes.) Will that distract from the purpose or inspire a following? (Also yes.) Does it make me vulnerable, and will that hurt me or help me? (Yep.)
I realized eventually that there is no escape from this conundrum, and I decided the risk of failure is worth the potential reward. In all the years of contemplation, I still do not see in the world anything close to what I want to see; so I must create it, and put aside any fears for what will come - even if nothing at all comes of it.
I don’t believe that anyway: it is impossible for “nothing” to come of it.
In fact, I believe this idea may be the beginning of something we’ve never seen before. There really is no other way - we have tools, resources, information, connection and the need more than any other time we can recall.
It isn’t even hard to do. It just takes some time. And with more help, more people connected working toward the same ends, it will take much less time than me doing this by myself.
Why
I’ve started and stopped and begun and given up on this project multiple times in the last 15 years, but the desire to pursue this passion won’t give up on me. I think the roots go deep and were present long before I felt the first inkling of reaching out to the world.
With what I imagine is an artist’s need to create, I have been compelled to compile and organize information around a certain... ideal; but the tricky part is, an ideal is subjective. It’s personal.
Indeed, so is art.
And yet I wanted to produce something that everyone could use and would find meaningful. Recently, I read a quote that made clear to me why my previous attempts were not successful or satisfying or universally well-received. Regrettably, I don’t have an attribution but I will add it if anyone knows who said, more or less: “The more you please generally, the less you please profoundly.”
My efforts are not for everyone, it turns out. Only some people will understand and appreciate and find meaningful what I am doing. Nevertheless, it is still my hope that everyone still positively impacted.
So instead of shaping, forming, branding and honing in advance what I want to see delivered with the hope that the world accepts and welcomes the final product, I have decided to change tactics.
Less structure, less forethought; more heart, more faith.
And, in effect, more content. The beauty of this platform is that I can constantly revise and update the posts.
I am moving toward organic growth and evolution.
Just like a river that collects fragments of the land as it runs it course over time and deposits them as sediments in a delta, I aim to provide a stream of information that grows into a collection of ideas for others to find value.
My dream is to generate enough momentum that something beautiful can be built from the humble beginnings. If you want to know more, please ask.
