i think people really under sell the physical side effects of mental health disorders sometimes. like sure the depression and anxiety may be 'just in your head' but when what's in your head happens to disrupts your sleep schedule and prevent you from going outside regularly and eating consistent meals and exercising and generally taking care of your body. well it sure takes its toll huh.
My understanding of the connection between physical and mental health was fundamentally changed when I became ill with menopause symptoms: by the time I was properly diagnosed I was so anaemic that my red blood cells had started to die, and one of the symptoms of that is - extreme irritability. Apparently flying into a rage with your partner because they're coughing in another room is a symptom of iron deficiency? How does that even work? Fortunately for my partner, I went on a three-month course of horrible ferritin pills (which played hell with my digestion) and became much calmer.
