this scene can be interpreted as kind of a “yikes” thing for some ppl, so i wanna take a second to explain the episode and give a little context. not trying to change anyone’s opinion, i don’t really care, but this scene seems…problematic without context.
So the episode starts off with gumball and darwin coming home from school. they’re about to go in their house but then this lady opens the door, appearing to be leaving. she shuts the door and then Richard (gumball’s dad) opens it, having lipstick smeared on his face. Gumball asks about it and Richard evades the question, leading him to believe that richard is cheating on their mom.
So gumball and darwin follow richard around the next day. he sneaks out of his house and goes to the mall to buy perfume, which gumball and darwin thinks is for the lady they saw. Gumball freaks out, which leads to him losing richard in the crowd he then sees the lady from before meeting with three other ladies, who appear to be friends with her. they partake in some golden girls-esque banter, complete with a laugh track through this, we discover that the lady’s name is Samantha. she talks to her friends about a boyfriend, and gumball and darwin take this as evidence that richard is cheating. however, Samantha is actually Richard, and is “dating” herself.
anyway, some stuff happens, blah blah blah, and eventually richard reveals that he dressed as a woman so that he could befriend the three other ladies. He had tried to partake in traditionally masculine activities, like sports, fixing cars, etc. but wasn’t good at them and didn’t enjoy them. Because of that, he felt like he wasn’t a “real man.” he saw a group of women at the mall and admired them so much that he decided to become one. He found himself enjoying feminine things and hanging out with the girls more and more. eventually he tells them the truth, but they reveal that they’re also men pretending to be women for the same reason.
so in the end they all decide that it doesn’t matter if they’re technically men, and they decide to keep dressing as women and doing their own thing.
