What is this ‘link system?’

This is a new strategy we’re trying out. Its aim is to bring different online communities into the climate movement by creating a communication network to spread accessible digital actions like our action post for Afghanistan.

We were inspired partly by school ambassador systems that some climate organizers use for organizing large in-person protests. Another inspiration was the relational phonebanking strategy that some progressive political campaigns in the US are using to talk to voters about social issues using already-existing connections. You’re more likely to listen when a friend reaches out to talk to you about a political issue, as opposed to a stranger. It’s also more pleasant on the campaign’s end—it tends to be more fun to talk to friends and acquaintances rather than randomly calling 80-year-old voters and asking them to go for the more progressive candidate. 

Who are you?

This is the official Tumblr account for Fridays For Future Digital. Fridays For Future is a youth-led movement for climate justice that started when Greta Thunberg started striking from school in 2018.

Fridays For Future Digital is the part of the international movement that aims to make climate activism accessible. We understand that not everyone can attend in-person protests, so we run digital campaigns that people can participate in from their home. Petitions, email storms, and more are an effective way to create change that anyone can do!

How does the link system work?

We have three roles you can take on depending on how you interact with your online community.

Individual blogs that interact with a certain community (aka mental health tumblr, bookblr, animeblr, etc): We’d help you with making posts on how your community’s interests relate to climate justice. For example, for a fandom for a show that deals with imperialism, you can talk about how climate justice and imperialism intersect. We have no requirements for follow counts; if you’re fairly active, we invite you to join! Whenever we have an action post, you’d boost it so that your followers can take action. Additionally, we ask that your blog be mostly safe for work, or have anything nsfw tagged, because we are teen organizers.

Non-fandom groups (like Discord servers. These can be identity-based groups, groups that focus on social issues, etc): This would work as a partnership where you can boost any digital actions/content we have and vice versa. 

Fandom groups (aka Discord servers) and events: You would make an announcement (we’ll provide templates) saying you’re a “link” or a partner for this project. You’d assign a person to make sure all our digital actions are passed on to your members.

To make sure you don’t miss anything, you’ll choose either email or Discord as a communication method. If you choose email, you’ll be bcced on an announcement every time we need something boosted, and respond once you have. If you choose Discord, we’ll set up an announcements channel similar to a Telegram or a Whatsapp announcements channel, but on Discord for privacy. This server will not have any chatting channels because we currently don’t have capacity to moderate a place for people to talk; instead, we’ll use reactions to see when people have reblogged action posts and for any votes needed.

If, in the future, many people would like a space to chat and connect, we’ll consider making it happen.

Why should I be a part of the link system?

The climate movement can be inaccessible for many people; digital networks such as the link system are a way to bring more people into the movement and collectively create change, while having a network of people you can interact with. You get to connect topics you’re passionate about / things you already do to issues that relate to the climate crisis! 

How do I join the link system? 

Sign up at bit.ly/tumblr-link. From then on, we will contact you on your preferred platform to initiate you joining the link system.

Why Tumblr?

A problem that the climate movement has been struggling with is bringing new people into the movement. There are lots of people who want to get involved in social issues, but simply don’t know how. We want to break out of the echo chamber by opening up our movement to other communities, like fandoms!

Our campaign: #FandomsForFuture

We think that there is a lot of missed potential with fandoms to create change through digital actions - as Tumblr users we have passionate groups of people, significant platforms, and obsessions that sometimes even connect to issues like imperialism, colonialism, and environmental justice. This blog will help Tumblr fandoms and communities to get involved with climate justice and all the social issues it intersects with!

How this works is: Every Friday, we’ll make a post centered around a certain climate justice campaign. We’ll explain the issue, make all our images accessible to screen readers, and link to digital actions you can do whether you:

1. Have an internet connection (email storms, petitions)

2. Have a phone (calling political offices with a script to demand a certain action taken)

3. Have money (places you can donate to)

4. Have a following (things to boost)

So I totally just posted a new one shot today that is absolutely an excuse for me to use the headcanon that Ed is terrible at picking out baby names. You know how we all make fun of his style? Picture that, but with baby names. That’s what this story is.
