FLYNN RIDER; CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

“Well, that confidence certainly deflated fast. Thought you knew what you were doing?”

Flynn scoffed, shaking his head at the others words, “What, no- there’s no confidence deflation here and I do know what I’m doing. Still doesn’t change the fact that it’s hard to pull off when people are watching and waiting for you to screw up.”

“Things work out in your favor? Do I really need to remind you of last time?” Adeline commented, checking her nails and not even bothering to look up at Flynn. “You’re an idiot. Don’t come running to me when you end up with your pride injured. Again.”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about, last time worked out perfectly and exactly the way I wanted it to.” Flynn commented, in denial of the fact a lot of his plans did seem to hit a speed bump halfway through their execution. “I resent the fact you’re calling me an idiot, I didn’t get the job I have by being an idiot thank you very much. I simply like to take risks and they pay off, most of the time.”

“Well, I guess I’ll just wish you luck then. But just, please be careful. It’s kind of my job to keep you from doing anything you really shouldn’t, but if you do it anyway, I can’t really control that.” 

Flynn looked at the other and then to the weights in front of him, “You know I am deceivingly strong. I may look a little weedy but I have muscles-... not muscles like yours, but there’s still something there.”

Arms folded over her chest, a bit of amusement hitting her as she realized she ran into someone who had a lot of faith in his own ability. “Alright, let’s see how well you do.” She told him, nodding for him to continue, curious if he made it. 

“You know you standing there like that is not helping, just saying? I don’t perform well with a judgemental audience.”

“Name one time that shit’s worked out in your favor,” Tucker taunted the other, rolling his eyes at him. “I don’t see this working out in any universe, but have at it. I can have a good laugh at you when you inevitably mess it up.”

“Just one, I can give you a whole list.” Flynn scoffed looking at his cousin with a shake of his head, “You know I find it very sad that you trust my abilities so little and anyways, if I do mess up, it’ll be nothing compared to when you fuck up. You tend to go big or go home, which is unfortunate for me.”

“Sounds precisely like something somebody would say right before things work out in the very opposite of their favor,” the blonde argued with a light smile on her lips. “But alright, go ahead. Let’s see how accurate your gut instinct is.”

"Maybe, but at least by going about it this way I’m remaining optimistic for my future.” Flynn told the other, noting the smile on her lips and giving her one in return. “You just going to stand there and watch? Kind of off-putting really.”

“Alright then, say I let you go ahead with this plan of yours. What happens if it doesn’t work out in your favor? I get to say I told you so? Because I don’t like saying that often but for some reason I feel like it’d be satisfying to get to say that to you.”

“You get to say you told me so and then we go on a very brisk jog because if it doesn’t work out, we’re going to have some pretty pissed people on our hands. So really we both win, you get to prove me wrong and I get to dump some of the blame onto someone.”

“None of that– I believe everyone has an artistic bone in their body,” Raegan told the other, sitting across from him. “Have you ever tried pottery or finger painting? You strike me as a pretty hands-on guy so those seem like the most fitting mediums to suggest to you.”

“Then you’re clearly too big of an optimist.” Flynn commented, looking at the other and wondering how he managed to get himself into this situation. “Maybe when I was five, not since then though. Though you would be right about being pretty hands on.” He commented with a small smirk and a wink.

“Almost there…” Ariel was just about done making her small tiny fort made out of waffles - using the food as a work of art rather than something to eat. She was just about done however was missing the final touches. She looked over at the person sitting at the table next to hers. A young man with dark hair, who appeared friendly enough to bother. “Hey, sir, mind if I borrow that if you aren’t using it?” She asked as she pointed at the toothpick on his plate.

Flynn looked up when he heard someone call out to him, noting that the girl was wanting his used toothpick which cause a look of amusement and curiosity on his face. “You want- the toothpick?” He asked, just wanting to make sure before handing it over, observing her small fort of waffles. “So are you planning on eating that or living in it?”

“Come on, man! It was an honest mistake!” Peter continued to try to defend himself from the man who had caught him in mid action right as his hand had pulled away from the lady’s pocket. “Like you haven’t stolen anything before!”

“Please, that was anything but an honest mistake.” Flynn told the other rolling his eyes before they narrowed in his direction, “And what makes you think I’ve stolen anything before, do I have the look of thief written all over me?”

Gage let out a huff of annoyance, his smile becoming a little forced as he looked down to watch the coffee spread over his shirt. Licking his lips, he shook his head. “Fine,” he answered. “It’s a good thing I keep spare clothes in my truck.” He glanced up at the other, checking him out slowly, noting that he had missed him with the coffee. “Glad I could provide some entertainment.” 

Flynn liked to think he was pretty good when it came to reading people and all the sounds of annoyance that came from the other followed by the short ‘fine’ gave him a big indicator that the guy in front of him was probably hot headed and easily irritated. If not easily angered. “You keep spare clothes in your trunk? Someone was clearly a boy scout, people aren’t normally that prepared.” He commented with a small shrug.

“Dude, you look like shit,” Phillip said, handing the other a coffee, “What happened to you?”

“You really know how to make a guy feel special.” Flynn commented, holding an ice pack to his eye as he turned to face the other. “It’s funny, some people really aren’t happy upon learning that their spouse hired a PI to investigate them.”

The school year was close to starting, which meant that Gage had a lot of meetings to attend for leadership and other, what he believed to be, unnecessary topics that were the same every year. He rarely could stay awake in them, which meant that he regularly stop at the local cafe to caffeinate himself strong enough to keep his eyes open. Coffee in hand, he walked through the door, only to knock into someone coming into the cafe, his coffee spilling on his black t-shirt, burning his skin. “Shit,” he cursed, picking his hands up, allowing the hot fabric to peel off his abdomen. He cursed again and looked up at the person, “You good?” he asked gruffly. 

“More then good, just enjoying the show that I didn’t expect to get when I came in for my morning pick me up.” Flynn commented a smirk on his face as he observed the other man who seemed to be suffering over the coffee spill whereas he stayed dry. “How about you, other then being slightly scolded, good?”

“Oh this? Yeah, I got it after getting beating a jester at his own game.” Reese shrugged, however loving the attention that his new expensive watch was getting at the barbeque. It was one of the only reasons why Reese volunteered at events such as this: to be noticed. “Enough about me though.” He smiled as he - begrudgingly- went back to working the snow cone stand. “What flavor do you want?”

“So you won it by clowning about? Interesting.” Flynn couldn’t help but snort slightly, “I mean it’s nice, a little too blingy for my liking and looks a little inexpensive. Almost like a knock off.” He teased, knowing exactly how to try and get a rise out of people, how he hadn’t been punched out this year yet, he didn’t know. “I’ll take two cherry, I’m guessing that’s what to go for since the recipient of one didn’t say a flavour, they just said red.”

“Sorry– sorry! I get a little overexcited. Bad habit,” she admitted, laughing brightly as she took his outstretched hand to give it a shake in return. “It is an absolute pleasure to meet you mister Flynn Rider,” the blonde smiled. “I am Raegan Gothel, but everybody calls me Rae. Then it’s a deal– what’s your drink of choice?”

“It’s fine, really just- was expecting to get a beat down for doing something... - you know what, I’m not going to finish that and tarnish the image you have of me right now.” Flynn commented, focusing instead on the other and her shaking his hand in greeting. “You don’t have to call me Mister- really, that makes me sound official. But it’s a pleasure to meet you too, Rae.” He smiled. “Well if we’re going alcoholic then it’s always a Jack and Coke- if we’re going for something soft, well... I guess it’d be a Coke on it’s own.”
