“Can you be a fan of a game without having played it?” is not a helpful question I think, bcs thats a subjective feeling. I think u can watch a playthrough and enjoy it, sure enough. U can immerse urself in the universe of a game via music, wiki pages, discussions, fanart. U can like as much of it as u want, it’d be very silly for me to police that, and I’m not interested in doing it. Hell, ive watched games that I loved for many different reasons (no time or money to invest in them, as examples).

But games ARE an interactive medium, and im a bit baffled by how many ppl just seem to consider the “playing” part unimportant to the experience of the game. They arent movies, the “story” and visuals are not the only aspects. By watching it ur inevitably missing a big part of it that cannot be replaced, and you cant blame ppl if they disregard some of your opinions in discussions around a game if u havent played it.

To me its sorta like reading movie scripts vs watching them, right? Both tell everything that happens, and u can love both, but surely they are NOT the same experience.

Reiterating that i think watching playthroughs is completely fine and a fun thing to do, just that unfortunately it is indeed, not playing the game.
