It's (almost) that time of year again, and well I'm doing things a little different this year so I figure I'd give the prompt list a little early! Arthurian August is a yearly art/writing/gif making/whatever other creative things challenge during the month of August centered on the Arthurian Legends. In the past I've had a prompt a week for the month of August, but this year I'm trying a bingo card format, pictured below:
The idea is you can check as many applicable boxes as you want for each creation you make, so if you make one or two things you can still get a bingo, granted you include all five prompts between those creations. Of course if you only want to check one box per creation that's fine too. The goal is to kinda open this up so people who don't have much time can still complete something. (More rules and prompt explanations under the cut)
Rules:
The challenge officially runs from August 1st to the 31st, put things in the tag #arthuriana august and/or @caer-gai and I'll reblog it!
You can create in any medium you want! (Please no AI)
NSFW and gore are allowed, just tag appropriately! I will use discretion while reblogging
I will be checking the tag and reblogging between August 1st and August 31st 2026! Feel free to post before or after that time frame if you need to, but I might not see it if you don't tag me
MOST IMPORTANT RULE OF THE WHOLE CHALLENGE: have fun! Don't push yourself too hard this is a silly and fun thing! Take the time you need, just tag me when you're done. I run these because I like seeing what you make <3
As always send me asks/notes/DMs/page boys with any and all questions! I'm happy to help=)
Prompt Explanations/Ideas-
Inspired By A German Text: Create something inspired by/containing a character, storyline ect from a German Text (ie Diu Crône, Lanzelet, Daniel von dem Blühenden Tal).
Featuring An Obscure Character: Create something that centers on a character you consider to be obscure. Obviously obscurity is subjective so I leave that mostly to your own judgement.
Comedic: Create something with a comedic tone, in the comedy genere, or having to do with the more comedic elelments of arthuriana.
wlw: Create something involving a romantic or sexual pairing that falls under the 'women loving women' umbrella.
Inspired By An English Text: Create something inspired by/containing a character, storyline ect from an English Text (ie Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, The Wedding of Sir Gawain and Dame Ragnelle).
LGBTQ+: Create something with a character(s), theme(s), or story that falls under the LGBTQ+ umbrella. (gay, bi, pan, trans, intersex, ace/aro, nonbinary, ect)
Fanwork or Inspired By Med Lit: Create something that is a fanwork of or inspired by a medieval text.
Family: Create something that has to do with family and family dynamics.
Fanwork or Inspired By Other Media: Create something that is a fanwork of or inspired by some other arthuriana media, like tv shows, games, comics, songs, etc.
Based on an Obscure Text: Create something that centers on a text you consider to be obscure. Obviously obscurity is subjective so I leave that mostly to your own judgement.
Tragic: Create something with a tragic tone, in the tragedy genere, or having to do with the more tragic elelments of arthuriana.
Inspired By A Text In Another Language: Create something inspired by/containing a character, storyline ect from a text originally written in a language other than the four listed on this card (for example texts from the Dutch, Icelandic, Yiddish, Italian, or Latin traditions would count).
Woman POV/MC : Create something where a woman is the main/focus character or from a woman's point of view.
Friendship: Create something that has to do with friendship.
Happy: Create something with a happy tone or having to do with the more happy/light hearted elelments of arthuriana.
Featuring An Obscure (Non-Romantic Pairing): Create something that focuses on a pairing (or larger) combination of characters who are not often discussed/seen together in modern works. One or more characters can be popular themselves, its the combination that's obscure in this case. Additionally this must be a non-romantic relationship, there's a different square for that one. Obviously obscurity is subjective so I leave that mostly to your own judgement.
Fanwork or Inspired By A Retelling: Create something that is a fanwork of or inspired by a modern retelling.
Romance: Create something focused on or having to do with romance or romantic feelings.
Fanwork or Inspired By A Movie: Create something that is a fanwork of or inspired by an arthurian movie.
In A New Medium: Create something in a medium that you don't usually use. (ie if you usually write, draw something, or make a webweave.)
Inspired By A Welsh Text: Create something inspired by/containing a character, storyline ect from a Welsh Text (ie Peredur, The Mabinogoin).
Legacy: Create something that has to do with the theme of legacy, either within the arthuriana or the legacy of the arthurian legend.
Angsty: Create something with a angsty tone or having to do with the more angsty elements of arthuriana.
Featuring An Obscure Ship: Create something that centers on a romantic/sexual relationship between two or more characters that aren't frequently paired together. As with the non-romantic pairing, this is about the relationship being obscure not necessarily the characters in it. The fandom kids call this a "rarepair". Obviously obscurity is subjective so I leave that mostly to your own judgement.
Inspired By A French Text: Create something inspired by/containing a character, storyline ect from a French Text (ie Chretien de Troyes's Romances, The Vulgate Cycle, Le Bel Inconnu).
Once again, please let me know if you have any questions! Have fun and I hope to see y'all in August!!

Sentences from what was supposed to be a Kevin Day character study:
Maybe Jean was not the wound that wouldn't stop bleeding. Maybe Jean was the blood that wouldn’t stop flowing. Maybe, however self centered that seemed, he was the cut and Jean the blood, being ripped from its home. Escaping its prison. Maybe Jean Moreau had been blood all along. Blood in his veins, blood on the floor, blood on the wall and on the bed, blood trickling down steadily, so quiet you didn’t even notice you were bleeding. So quiet you didn’t really notice he was long gone. Maybe Jean was the blood, flowing, always flowing and Kevin the flesh, dead and hollow until they met.
If you're writing anything involving cons, scams, heists, or morally questionable characters who are very good at lying, here are some free resources I've been using for research. Saving you the "why is this in my search history" anxiety.
1. The FBI's Famous Cases & Criminals archive (fbi.gov/history/famous-cases) has detailed breakdowns of real fraud cases, Ponzi schemes, and confidence operations. The language they use is clinical and precise, which is perfect for getting the procedural details right.
2. The FTC Consumer Sentinel Network publishes annual reports on the most common fraud tactics in the US. Great for understanding how modern scams actually work and what makes people fall for them.
3. The Smithsonian's American Art Museum has a free digital collection of forgery case studies. If your character forges documents or art, this is gold.
4. Court Listener (courtlistener.com) is a free legal database where you can read actual court transcripts from fraud trials. Want to know how a real con artist talks under oath? This is where you find out.
5. The Internet Archive's collection of old newspaper crime sections. Search for "confidence man" or "swindle" in papers from the 1920s through 1960s and you'll find incredible real stories that would feel too dramatic for fiction.
Bonus: The Psychology of Fraud section on the Association for Psychological Science website has accessible articles about why people trust, how deception works cognitively, and what makes someone a convincing liar. Essential reading if you want your con artist characters to feel psychologically real.
Reblog to save for later. Your WIP will thank you.

This might be nothing, but Riko's name. It could have been latinized differently - this isn't the most common spelling for the boy's name (that would be Rikou or maybe Rikō), but it's the one that looks identical to the girl's name Riko. Do we think that's intentional?
Do we think that Riko's mother wanted nothing more than a daughter, because she would be able to keep her, like she wouldn't be able to keep another son? Do we think she had kanji picked out for a daughter and then had to throw them out and settle for a different name that looks the same only in English when her prayers didn't work?

Do you ever imagine little Kevin, who grew up with a loving mom who probably kissed his scraped knees and bruised shins better, who realizes that Riko is hurt (something like a cigarette burn or a nasty bruise from his uncle hitting him) and, because he doesn't know how else to help, offers to kiss it better?
(Do you ever imagine Riko kneeling in front of Kevin eleven years later, prying the bloody mess that was his hand out of his grip and pressing a kiss to the back of it?)
Can you imagine Kevin Day in a game of Two Truths One Lie - like: 1. I once chased a half bottle of vodka with two tequila shots. 2. One time I played a full game with a broken ankle. 3. I've never had sex without Riko in the room.
Soulmate AU where Andrew was born with a mark, but cut right through it when he was like eleven, because he refuses to be bound to another person (he remembers it, of course he does, he remembers everything), Kevin was born without a mark (the only other person he knows who doesn't have one either is Riko and what does that say about him) and Neil hasn't looked at his own mark since he started running, because his mom would kill him for compromising himself like that (he doesn't remember it, but Kevin does).
hello fellow artists. google has fallen. pinterest/duckduckgo AI filters don't work. do not despair; here is a list i made of places to find reference images without having to sift through piles of worthless garbage. (for future editing convenience i am just linking my blog post on dreamwidth.)
✨ good places to find art reference that are not full of AI trash 🌈
Something something, offhand mention of Tetsuji Moriyama's wife, who tried to divorce him and died in a car crash two days before the first divorce hearing, while Tetsuji was on live TV playing exy. Something something Kaileigh Day, who died in a suspiciously similar car crash three years later while Tetsuji was yet again playing exy on live TV.
Something something two women whose obituary pictures look like they could be sisters killed to suit the whims of a manchild.

When Andrew says "jump" Kevin doesn't say anything, he just jumps, as high as he can, every time, without fail. The problem with that is, that when Andrew says jump what he wants to hear is "fuck you, no."
