BIOGRAPHY
tw: murder, death
she was too strange for now long-dead parents β an illyrian male and high fae female who had been a mated pair, who had remained in illyria for a time. she escaped the clipping of her own wings only because her father wanted her power intact. her mother taught her to glamour them to be safe. her father trained her and her sisters in secret. and then when they were old enough, tried to take over the camp. they failed. her father was nearly killed and the family fled to the ancestral home of her mother. they were hunted, high fae looked down on her mother for the match, and when one who malva allowed close to herself turned them over to the illyrians who were still angry, the eldest elessar daughter fled with her sisters and youngest sibling. the eldest brother sided with her father, and her mother was killed in the conflict.Β
years later revenge plots disguised as vacations ended in her and only one sibling being all that was left of the elessars, and her sibling eventually left her when she refused to trust one of his friends β even though she was right. she heard later that that friend had betrayed her sibling, and that friend met a mysterious ending. but she did not seek her sibling out, remaining home where she had built herself a life. at first, she simply spent her time baking and helping those around her β she had gotten a job initially with a bakery, and spent her salary on supplies to cook for those who were not so lucky. she ended up building up her reputation β quiet, antisocial, but generous β and her protection extended to those who were deserving. she was stronger than most, from her fatherβs attempt to use her to overthrow the camp she grew up in. she didnβt like the attention brought on by her generosity, and as soon as she could, she hired someone else to take her place. she funded the charities, she paid for what was needed. they handled anything that required a face.
she became a soldier because of her strength, spending her time away from her bakery training until her commander assigned her a trainee. she was annoyed β she hated training others. she was awkward and didnβt like to be social. and he was too curious, too happy for her. she doesnβt know when she fell. she isnβt sure what the fluttering feeling she gets in her chest when she sees him is. she hasnβt mentioned it to anyone because it scares her.Β
she eventually took over as commander despite feeling wholly unqualified, and still extends her help to whoever she feels deserves it.

pet peeves: nicknames (if someone mispronounces her name or calls her the wrong name after it's long enough they should know, she starts calling them by the wrong name out of spite, she will also stop a conversation until her name is correct or she gets frustrated and flies off).

"We could find somewhere quieter." The words came out before he'd fully thought them through, and he felt his wings twitch. It was a nervous tell he'd never been able to shake, one that betrayed him every time his heart started beating faster than it should. He wondered if she noticed. She probably had, she seemed to notice everything.
"I just... I just think..." He rubbed the back of his neck, his palm coming away slightly damp. When had his palms gotten so sweaty? It wasn't even that hot. The Dawn Court was perfect, the kind of balmy evening that poets wrote sonnets about. And here he was, sweating like a raw recruit on his first battlefield, all because he'd suggested wandering off alone with her. This was probably why he was a knight and not an emissary. His gaze dropped to the cake in her hands, then skittered away to the roses, the distant figures of courtiers drifting through the gardens in their silks and jewels. Then his eyes found their way back to her.
She was wearing a dress. He'd noticed it the moment he'd walked up, from across the garden when he'd first spotted her silhouette against the water. She always looked beautiful, even in her armor and leathers and training gear worn soft from use, hair a mess from moving so much. But this was different. She looked like she'd stepped out of a painting, like she belonged in a garden full of roses. Stop staring.
"I saw a path earlier," he said, his voice steadier now. "When I was doing my rounds. It's past the roses. Overgrown, less... manicured." He paused, suddenly aware of what he was suggesting. The two of them, alone, at a party where anyone could see them leave together? Rumors spread faster than fire through dry grass. Apparently he couldn't help himself.
"I just thought..." That you might want me there. That you deserve to be somewhere beautiful without everyone gawking at you. He paused, swallowed. His wings gave one final, traitorous twitch. "It could be nice. To get away." He finished, and the words felt too small for everything he meant.
she recognises the way his wings twitch, her own shifting as she rolls her shoulders at the discomfort of the crowds near them. her own nervous habit that she knows heβd be familiar with after knowing each other so long. βquieter sounds nice.β she replies, grateful for the offer.
she frowns when he trails off, stretching her neck a little with her own nerves, watching him as he rubs his neck. her wings flutter slightly when she shifts again, glancing around again, at the other fae, at the flowers around them, down at the cake sheβd forgotten about, back to him. always back to him. sheβd been looking all day, every time theyβd been separated. she twists the end of her braid around her fingers, biting her lip.
sheβs out of place. she had dressed according to what she expected of the events, rather than wearing her usual armour and leathers. although would anyone have questioned it had she shown up in her leathers? armour? she never really knows. she draws herself out of her thoughts and feels her cheeks heat when she realises heβs still watching her.
βfewer people.β somewhere to remove them from the crowds. and she finds, in the moment, she doesnβt care about the rumours so much. time alone with rivian is worth others talking. anyone who matters will hear their version, not some made up story the busybodies of mistvale come up with.
βit would be.β she tilts her head, stopping herself from reaching out to touch him when his wings twitch again, and she nods. her shoulders roll again, βlead the way?β it would be nice to get away, to see parts of the court without the rest of the courtiers around them, with him beside her.
omar was sure he stuck out like a sore thumb, his height making it so he could see over a good amount of other faes' heads at six foot five, regardless of the wings he had glamorized for the first event of the season, not wanting to put any more unwanted attention on himself. the suit was proper, nothing like he was used to back at home, his sister helping him pick it out once he realized he had to look a certain way now that he was to be by the high lady's side at all times. in the moment she had gone to mingle and do her part as a new high ruler, especially one that many in the other courts didn't know of until recently, and she had asked him to keep an eye out from a distance, to prove that she wasn't like her parents, wanting to come off warmer.
so now there he was, stood to the side and trying not to run into anything, if not with his height but also the pair of swords he kept at his side at all times. he let's out a sigh of relief, clear as day once recognizing the voice and quickly taking the treat she holds out, grateful for something to currently do. he's taking a bite as he listens to her words, furrowing his brows though it's clear there's a fondness to him there. "does this plan mean you'd be holding around a tray for the rest of the event? because if so...I think they'll notice." he takes another treat from the tray, quickly popping it into his mouth. "high lady of earth wants me to stay nearby but not noticeably so now instead of awkwardly following her around i'm just...at the corner of her eye...which i'm not sure feels any better..."
all of the illyrians probably stick out, whether their wings are out or not. even she, had she left her wings glamoured, would still be taller than many of the women. she had dressed up in one of the few dresses remaining from her motherβs old belongings β which sheβd had to alter to fit, but she thinks she did a good enough job that no one will truly notice. she hopes. she glances around to see if she can spot earthβs high lady β she thinks she should offer some sort of ongoing promise of free pastries should they ever visit the night court, since malvina had spent so many centuries sneaking into earth. because sheβs gained her found family that way. even though she understands this lady is rather different from her parents.
she wonders if they can hide on the sidelines for the entirety of the events. she smiles at the relief in omar at it being her, the grin widening when he takes the tart. she shrugs, βi mean, if we stay to the side, maybe we can kind of use the shadows to hide a little more. leave ourselves just visible enough our rulers know weβre here for them?β she muses as she contemplates the very poorly thought out plan. βor we find a spot to stash the tray and stay there.β she nods, βthat makes sense. youβre here if she needs you, but she can make her introductions without her commander scaring anyone off. nightβs new lord can be imposing enough on his own, but i think iβd scare off some of the others that he wants to make a better impression on if i stayed with himβ¦β she shrugs. βwhy isnβt it any better?β
ππππππππ: dawn court, the garden party
β for ππππππ
he'd lost count of exactly how many tarts he'd already shoved into his mouth, but kal knew for a fact that he'd cleared the trays of four different servers. each one seemingly more aggravated than the last, but they were too good to pass up. he'd even begun to feel full, though if given the chance he'd clear anotherβor as much as he could.
"what do you think are the chances they return to the kitchens and warn each other who to avoid?" he chuckled to the party guest beside him almost hoping that wasn't the case.
sheβs positive the servers think sheβs scary, because no one had given her any grief over having snuck away with a whole tray of desserts before sheβd found omar. maybe she should feel a bit bad because sheβs refilled the tray as well. but sheβd also given the server sheβd first taken food from a card for her own bakery with the promise a bribe for free desserts should they visit her own court at any point.
βthatβ¦ would make sense, honestly. who is scary and who is creepy in a bad way to stay away from? probably telling each other whoβs the nicest, too, and taking better care of them.β

location: the garden party, dawn court gardens
The Dawn Court's gardens were beautiful in a way that made Rivian's skin itch. Too bright, perfect, and full of High Fae who had never known what it was like to be looked at the way people looked at him. It typically went the same: a flicker of surprise when they saw his wings, the quick reassessment, and the obvious unspoken question: what was someone like him doing here? He'd been asking himself that question his whole life. He still didn't have an answer.
He didn't have a reason to be here. He'd already check in with the other Night Court attendees, already made sure their accommodations were acceptable, already eaten enough dewdrop cakes that he was starting to feel a little sick. There was no processional excuse for seeking her out. He just... wanted to. That was the problem, wasn't it? He always wanted to.
"Hi." The word came out quieter than he intended, almost swallowed by the distant murmur of the garden party. He cleared his throat, hands finding their way into his pockets, wings tucking a little tighter against his back. "I thought I would find you here. The party's..." He searched for the right word. "Too many flowers. Too many people. Too much happening."
his shadows rattle within their containment.γhe can never quite slow their thudding in the same way he dampens his own heart, tucked behind some curtains in his ribcage, happy to hide.γhow he wishes he could do the same, in some peaceful corner somewhere in the dark.γfortunately, the tender rays of dawn filter his theatrics into something palatable for the fae grazing about the flowers.γhe is studying them, as always.γmany carry a familiar face, though they'd fail to recognize him in return.γhe's about to muse on how fortunate that is, until he is spoken to, and he shakes off the thought with a polite nod.γ"YOU HAVE CHOSEN THE PERFECT MOMENT:γAM I TRULY BETTER THAN DEWDROP CAKES FOR COMPANY?"
she wonders if anyone will really notice if she does disappear into the shadowsβ¦ other than rivian. he always knows. dawn is lovely, but sheβd like to enjoy it without the court obligations, without the politics, the necessity of the social season. it makes her uncomfortable. sheβs never known how to read social cues, never done well with the banter, the conversation. she wants to drag her friends into the gardens and hide. instead sheβd collected a handful of desserts and slipped over to another observer, βis anyone truly better company than cake?β she replies. βi have always found dessert to be more palatable than most fae.β
she shouldnβt be surprised to see her, since she had heard sheβd inherited the role of high lady. and yet, malvina still reels a little bit at seeing aurora out in the gardens when their friendship had always been kept to the privacy of @verdominaeβs home, when the shadowsinger had grown so protective of her, originally just based on a vibe. aurora had been a rarity when malvina had been so quick to distrust anyone unrelated to the few friends sheβs collected over the years. and the illyrian had always been so overprotective of that chosen family.
malvina slips up to aurora, offering a slight curtsy to her, though her grin is wide and she pulls the high lady into a hug. βyou look absolutely beautiful,β she says as she pulls back, hands resting on auroraβs shoulders so she can look her over.

the shadowsinger has never liked crowds, has never known how to handle these social situations. she wants to sink into her shadows and hide from the whole thing. her mother would have encouraged her to give it a chance. her sisters would have loved the chance to feel like normal high fae. she hates herself for thinking it. she slips away from the rest, wandering further into the gardens, rather than her shadows like she wants. sheβs out of place. sheβs a soldier, a weapon, a baker when she wants softness. sheβs not a lady of her court. she doesnβt know how to behave at these things. as much as she likes dresses, she just never knows what exactly to do with herself when out of fighting leathers.
she softens just a little bit when she sees the familiar figure of @outfated ahead. sheβd always had a slightly easier relationship with those she met in the early days of her bakery β before her distrust in the world truly settled. βi think i will never feel as out of place as i do when surrounded by lords and ladies and high society.β
