Day 11 // Floating Reverie

Today is the last day of my two week residency. I've been looking at process, trial and error, surprise and coincidence. I had intended to make 14 generative process based soundscapes, but it somehow seems fitting to end on 11, a number in it's prime (to draw on a week of bad puns).

This morning I awoke to a large gathering of people, singing to Allah, amplified from the park opposite my new home. I managed to grab a short recording and these voices make up the matter of today's soundscape.

It's been lovely.

Back to following lines. Some of the bassoonists stayed, some were replaced by percussionists who chose construction materials as their instruments (recordings I made on a construction site).

Day 7 // Floating Reverie

Ghostly bassoon orchestra? Technically a methodological departure, though still very much a process. My Max patch measures the amount of red in the image (kind of) and adds another bassoonist every time a new threshold is passed.

Today, horns. Trombones specifically. Try playing several of these pieces at the same time. Separate processes rubbing up against each other. They form a nice conversation to eavesdrop into.

Day 5 // Floating Reverie

Today I starting experimenting with other sounds. The unpredictable nature of asking audio software to interpret a word file as a sound wave leads to the results being sometimes lovely and sometimes not. Today's process uses sounds from an album I made in 2009, Hands & Feet.

Day 4 / Floating Reverie

Today some fellow artists noted that looking back on this process, after 14 days, it will be interesting to be able to observe this gradual process.

This morning the Google told me it was Nelson Mandela's birthday. I've never been much for celebrating the births and deaths of people I didn't know, no matter how much I admire their work, but today I decided to tip my hat to a very tall man who recently passed.

One of the sounds used in todays piece is a snippet of Mandela's voice saying, "maginary hearts". That's not what he actually said, but I cut it that way, it felt like a good message.

So this piece, the first to have title, is called Maginary Hearts : For Nelson : Rest In Piece.

Process. Following lines. Lines of thought, lines of signal, lines of code... I wrote a patch in Max/Msp that manipulates sample playback dynamically in response to numbers output by this Processing sketch. I made adjustments to get results I found interesting. The sonic material was created by importing the Processing sketches into an audio software as raw data. The software interprets the 0's and 1's as a waveform. A noisy waveform, yes, but a waveform. I then recorded the screen, using Quicktime, to capture the end result.

Floating Reverie Digital Residency

Composer Steve Reich spoke about Music as a Gradual Process, where musical compositions are themselves processes, and sought to make these processes audible. A process in this case is a set of rules or parameters over time, devised pathways through which to send sonic material. A kind of labyrinth, which will give form to a composition.

For my two week long Floating Reverie, I will be creating processes in response to another participant, Tegan Bristow’s experiments in code. The resulting loops of sound might be seen as an echo, an extension of a process, a process informed by another process. I find it fitting that Bristow’s works are created in a programming language called Processing…
