何か作りたくなったので、Maxで簡単なシーケンスプログラムを作った。 4つの音だけを使うので、「テトラノート」と名付けた。

Buchla Easel CommandにMIDIを送り、パッチを組んで鳴らした。 久々に触ってみて、自分は208のEnvよりもPulserの電圧変化のほうが、Gateに入ったときの音量変化用の電圧として好みだということに気づいた。

4つの音を使うことにしたのは、民謡の旋律をMIDIデータから可視化し、グラフで観察していたときに、ある傾向に気づいたからだ。 多くの民謡では、ある音から折り返しの音までの音域が4音幅で構成されており、折り返しを越えると、その付近の音を基点にさらに上の4音で旋律が形成されることが多い。また、下行する場合も同様に、4音幅で構成されていることが多いように思われた。

その観察から、今回は陽音階でよく使われる5音のうち、4音のみを選んで用いた。民謡の具体的な音程遷移データは参照せず、音は上行・下行、あるいはランダムに決定される。また、そのとき使用できる4音の組み合わせもランダムに拘束されるようにしている。

I felt like making something, so I built a simple sequencing program in Max. Since it uses only four notes, I named it “Tetranote.”

I sent MIDI to the Buchla Easel Command and patched it to produce sound. After touching it again for the first time in a while, I realized that I prefer the voltage changes from the 208’s Pulser rather than the Envelope as the control voltage for amplitude when entering the Gate.

The decision to use four notes came from an observation I made while visualizing folk song melodies from MIDI data and studying them through graphs. In many folk songs, the range between a starting tone and a turning point often spans four notes. When the melody crosses that turning point, it frequently forms another four-note range based around that area. Similarly, descending phrases also tend to be structured within a four-note span.
