It just dropped on Amazon Prime and it’s hilarious. I love strong female leads! Ambitious females, housewives, moms with daughters – it doesn’t matter. I love women taking control of their lives and the direction in which it goes. It’s awesome and empowering to watch. The four lead characters make a brilliant team on screen and are a pleasure to watch. It’s new for a Hindi series. Women who indulge in casual sex? Drink? Bisexual!? Well aren’t we finally catching up with the modern world – that’s not to say all this hasn’t existed before, it’s just never really been represented on the big screen. A lot of the older generation still believe that women must be seen and not heard. So, this is definitely refreshing. The trailer seems funny and quirky so I thought I’d give it a shot. It was so very worth it. Here’s what goes down. Damini Rizvi Roy (Sayani Gupta) is an ambitious young woman who runs a journalism website and fantasizes about her gynaecologist, the gorgeous Dr. Aamir Warsi (Milind Soman). Her lawyer Anjana Menon (Kilti Kulhari) is trying to raise her daughter all by herself because she recently went through a divorce. Anjana also hasn’t had sex since the birth of her daughter – said daughter is four years old. She also loathes her ex-husbands new girlfriend. Then we have Siddhi Patel (Maanvi Gagroo). Siddhi is a virgin whose mum is constantly nagging her to lose weight – so that she can marry her off that is. Last but not least we have Umang Singh (Gurbani). Umang is bisexual – woohoo for representation! She’s a bisexual personal trainer and all-round awesome person. These four women are friends who met at the Truck Bar and go there to blow off steam. As they bitch about their problems to each other as well as the bar’s owner things turn hilarious. They will get you laughing no matter what. Each character is well written. They all have good backstories and are developed. The show has clear intentions with each of them which is super nice to see. With these slightly comical yet with a touch of realism – we have one really good show. Shenanigans galore! The show isn’t really family appropriate though. Definitely not for kids. There’s plenty of sex or allusions to it. There isn’t really much skin shown though. The characters swear a bunch and are more or less like any other normal woman you see across the street. Being a die-hard Harry Potter fan, I tend to give anything a chance as long as one of the ‘golden trio’ are in it. But sadly, this wasn’t a case where my risks paid off. Sick Note is quite the disappointment from start to finish. What seems to be quite a morally inept premise follows through to a tangled-up plot with no finish line in sight. Here’s what happens. Daniel Glass (Rupert Grint) is a slacker. He’s one of the most incompetent people to grace the planet. He’s not good at his job, into which he constantly calls in sick. Sitting around his girlfriend’s flat playing video games and smoking all day, he’s not likeable. Said girlfriend, Becca Palmerstone (Pippa Bennett-Warner) isn’t the most screen friendly either but I liked her more than Daniel. He’s an utter loser, with zero drive to make his own – or anyone else’s for that matter – life better. Becca thinks Daniel’s putting up flyers for her missing cat (which he accidentally killed by the way, but she clearly doesn’t have to know that). Add in the fact that Daniel’s mum frequently mistakes him for his more successful brother and you get a clear idea of the character we’re dealing with here. Just as Becca’s about to dump him and kick him out of her flat the results of Daniel’s recent scans come back. Iain Glennis (Nick Frost), the most incompetent doctor in the entire world tells him it’s cancer – esophageal cancer to be more precise. Glennis also pronounces ‘esophageal’ wrong, so we already know this isn’t going to end well. Immediately, the unthinkable happens (not really, this is very predictable). Everyone starts being nice to Daniel. His girlfriend takes him back and sleeps with him. His boss – Michael (Karl Theobald – who was right on the verge of firing him decides not to. In short, his life gets way better than it was before the diagnosis. Except, turns out he doesn’t actually have cancer! As a very nervous Glennis comes to tell him. Daniel is mad, obviously. But not for very obvious reasons. What is he to do now that the very thing that made his life better is gone? Well. Lie! Obviously. In return for not reporting Glennis, Daniel asks him to pretend he still has cancer and miraculously cure him within 6 months. He goes about life with everyone being super nice to him. What happens when people find out? Things go downhill very quickly. It’s bad comedy. The show is mainly driven by male characters who don’t really do a good job of it. Every female character is either considered a she-devil or is incredibly dumb. The cast is great and so are the creators of the show, how they thought this would be received well is beyond me. Carlin Released on 2 November 2018 Duration 30 minutes No. of Seasons 1 No. of Episodes 13 Flixxpanda Rating 8/10 Channel Netflix Brainchild is Netflix’s latest venture in attempting to educate the masses. No, I’m just kidding, it doesn’t actually attempt to ‘teach’ you anything, more so invites you to open up your mind and allow knowledge to flood in. This is exactly why I loved the show so much. I hate cooking shows. Random fact isn’t it? You’ll see what I mean give me a minute. Cooking shows attempt to teach me how to make some sort of fancy dish and constantly tell me what to do – usually with the addition of a really bad song playing in the background. (I know copyright laws are hard, but really?). I don’t like people giving me bland instructions. It makes me faze out and snooze. Boring! Brainchild on the other hand made me want to learn. Teaching someone something and holding their attention is hard, but this show did a great job. It made me curious about whatever topic they were discussing on that episode. They invited me on a journey. They encouraged me. The series doesn’t talk down to its audience. I think that may be one of the best qualities of it and why people will watch it. It doesn’t feel like I’m sitting in a class room, with my professor yelling facts at me – facts that I will have to memorize for a final. With no impending doom (aka exams) in sight, I had no pressure to learn, that’s what made me want to. The show covers a lot of topics, seemingly random but entertaining all the same. The five-second rule episode where they observed people who picked up food and ate it vs. others that just threw it away was one of my personal favorites. Exploring topics like emotions (do they control us or do we control them?), why we like certain posts on social media and not others, etc etc. They inquire why we think the way we do. Super interesting stuff to be honest. My inner nerd woke up, stood proudly banging her chest, screaming “I will not be silenced!”. The hosts, Sahana Srinivasan and Alie Ward do a fantastic job. They ask questions at intervals, keeping you engaged and compare your answers with what others said. I believe the show is perfect for teens as well as preteens, heck, I’m an adult and I still enjoyed it! Its something you can watch with your kids. Get in that extra learning (if you’re that kind of a parent)! But its not just about learning, it asks and explains the questions we all do. The ones that we think about but never look up because we forget about them or we’re just too lazy to. Either way, Brainchild is super cool, stream it, you’ll love it. Genre Horror, Fantasy, Science-fiction Created by Bede Blake, Robert Butler Released on 31 October 2017 – present Duration 25 minutes No. of Seasons 1 No. of Episodes 13 Flixxpanda Rating 6/10 Channel Netflix Creeped Out is a horror anthology series on Netflix. But what does that mean? Well it falls in the horror genre, obviously. Anthology meaning that it consists of segments, all with an underlying common theme. Now where does Creeped Out fall in that? Netflix recommends the show to ages 8 and above, which is great but chances are kids below the age of 10 are going to be too scared to continue. However, preteens have loved it. The show’s creators say that they wanted it the series to be something children can watch with their parents – and they have achieved exactly that. Creeped Out is like Black Mirror, but a much more milder version – dumbed down for kids. It seems to drift between science-fiction, horror and fantasy seamlessly. However, that’s not to say its gory or overly terrifying – aka no nightmares will wake you up in the middle of the night. Each episode circles around for a bit before imparting some sort of moral on the usage of social media or as I like to call it selling your soul to the ever-growing black mass that is the Internet. The show tries to sell a commentary on our social behaviors along with knowledge on how to better ourselves. It’s just super child friendly – so if you’re not a parent, this one isn’t for you. The show features some imaginary friends (that aren’t really imaginary), phones (that have minds of their own) and some frankly really weird puppets. But the strange part is, for all the hype of it being child friendly, each episode has different things to creep you out. So, if you watch an episode where there’s a sentient phone – your child might be okay with that, but in another episode of creepy imaginary friends – your child might not be so okay with that. I suggest reviewing an episode by episode summary before making your kid watch it. It’s a good introductory supernatural series too – if you’re a fan of horror. Creeped Out will make kids smarter. The decisions they make have direct effects on them and the people around them and this show does a fantastic job of highlighting that effectively. It implores children to look inward and not buy into everything they see online just because its wrapped up in a nice flashy package for them to consumer. It takes the saying “don’t talk to strangers” to a whole new level. Overall, I’d say it’s a very important one for kids of this generation, if they can stomach it. Video Credit – Netflix | YouTube
