Maybe it is the idiosyncrasies of Helga’s way of seeing things, special and passionate, that makes her collection on paper so forceful. Because paperis somewhat fragile, on the point of slipping away. There is something of a love letter, those that are blown away and reach their recipients like the kisses, as mentioned by Kafka in Letters to Milena, that are drunk by the ghosts of dawn. Works on paper also have a very secretive element: their very frailty means they have to remain stored for long periods of time, away from prying eyes, only for the eyes of the owner. Always intuitive, Helga de Alvear soon understood the importance of works on paper – especially drawings – that has begun to govern the current scene, offering that portion of freedom for creators that they may not be able to achieve using other techniques given the intimacy that paper affords.
