As for color theory, based on the concept of Art, you should pay attention to the light (morning, daytime, evening, cold, warm, muted) and the overall environment. If the drawing represents a bright, warm morning with a cup of coffee in the kitchen, it's better to use warm shades. For example: if you're coloring the skin in beige, try to choose brown and shades of pink for the shadows, but if the art is cold, use purple, dark shades of beige, etc. I usually use purple for the shadows of all objects, including clothing, as it's a versatile color. However, since I mostly draw digitally, I'm not sure how it would look on paper. Also, keep in mind that I'm not a professional artist; I'm just a self-taught individual.
