I think one aspect of white supremacy that isn’t being talked about enough is that there are both open and disingenuous plans to remove non-whites who refuse to fall in line with white institutions. Things like this will continue to happen. I’m not saying plagiarism is okay; I’m saying that academics often get away with things far more heinous than simple plagiarism the closer they are to money and power. He is a victim of the racist white supremacy that pervades these places. The university is not a moral institution. It is as corrupt as any other institution built by capital, especially when that capital is built through the exploitation of the peripheries.
Legitimately so many PhDs are written here in kenya by underpaid and uncredited researchers. It literally is many ppls jobs. Some of them i know personally. I imagine the same applies to India and so on.
Plagiarism might not be okay, but taking credit for other people's work is literally just the standard operating proceedure for academic progression.
If they rly had an issue with plagiarism they wouldnt have made a public parade over it. More importantly if they wanted to address plagiarism they'd deal with the structures that encourage it.
They'd deal with misogyny, they'd deal with racism, with classism, with how much they credit certifications from the global south, with how much research funding is available to other institutions, with how research credits are awarded hierarchically etc.
The academic world runs on plagiarism. It still happens today because it is beneficial to these institutions. Without plagiarism institutions such as Cambridge and Yale and so on would never be considered the primary and most reputable producers of knowledge. Thats only possible with the uncredited and poorly compensated labour of many people these sides of the world.
