I'm not saying you can't write whatever you like, but what's funny to me about all the fics where Grantaire spends his time debating Enjolras, is that, especially fresh from reread, he spends most of his scenes in the brick ranting to himself and being occasionally interrupted by other Amis when he's crossing a line.

Like, the other Amis are DEBATING to each other about whatever thing. Courfeyrac at one point loudly disagrees with Enjolras himself! Combeferre tries to convince him not to kill the artillery sergeant at the barricade.

Grantaire only talks to himself about how much life sucks, but when he speaks to Enjolras he ever only tries to convince him of his worth (with varying results). I think if he actually debated Enjolras on anything, Enjolras would actually like him, because it means Grantaire gives enough shit about something! And that's why Grantaire being willing to die with him is so important to Enjolras (he smiles! The only time he smiles at the barricade! He doesn't stop smiling when he's shot! This man just fell harder in his last 20 seconds of life to Grantaire's "fell first"!), and the moment Achilles and Patroclus are finally united.
