I simply don’t believe that historical accuracy or cultural heritage should be sacrificed for modern ideological agendas. My position has nothing to do with racism or prejudice; it is entirely about intellectual honesty. Turning every valid critique of forced diversity in historical or fantasy settings into an accusation of racism is unfair, lazy, and completely shuts down any meaningful discussion.
It’s true that the Mediterranean world was never completely isolated. There were interactions, trade, and some presence of Black Africans in Southern Europe, especially in Roman times or in port cities. But let’s not exaggerate: the idea that Black people were commonplace across most of premodern Europe is simply not historically accurate.
Historical and factual accuracy should never be compromised for the sake of modern trends; accuracy must come first and prevail over everything. Above all, historical truth must be accessible and known to everyone. It is precisely because the truth is not widely known that misunderstandings and distortions occur. Half-knowledge is far more dangerous than total ignorance. When people rely on movies or television as their primary source of education, presenting historical inaccuracies as factual truth exploits public ignorance and reshapes how society views the past.
I have no problem with artistic freedom. As a Greek, for example, I don’t mind if a director casts a beautiful Black actress as Helen in a new adaptation. She can be stunning and talented. But we should be honest about what we’re doing. Homer described Helen with fair, almost translucent white skin and light hair,the ideal of beauty for the ancient Greeks, who were themselves a White Mediterranean people. Othello, on the other hand, was clearly written by Shakespeare as a Black Moor. That’s how their creators imagined them. There’s nothing wrong with either original choice.
The problem arises when we deliberately change the race or core elements of characters and then pretend it’s still faithful to the source. If I made Othello White or turned Helen Black, that would be inaccurate to the author’s vision. Great works should be judged and interpreted as texts written in another time, with a different culture and worldview. If we want to bring them closer to our era to make them more understandable, I believe the greatest texts don’t actually need heavy adaptations or modern alterations. It is enough to look honestly at history, knowledge, and the truth of each period. When we do that, everything becomes clear: the meanings, the ideas, and especially the universal, timeless values they carry.
We cannot present ahistorical depictions just because it suits a modern agenda. If a director wants to make a modern, diverse, or godless version of the Odyssey, that’s their right. But they must have the intellectual honesty to state clearly: “This is a fiction inspired by historical events,” or “This is my own re-imagining of a classic text.” They should not market it as a faithful representation of the original.
The Odyssey is not just a story; it features active gods who constantly intervene, and its characters reflect the specific worldview, values, and geography of the Greek world Homer knew. To strip away or alter these core elements while claiming to present a "faithful copy" is a distortion of cultural heritage. We can love and respect the classics while still creating entirely new things. What I oppose is the rewriting of our history and culture, and the shaming of anyone who points out the alterations. Artistic freedom should always go hand in hand with intellectual honesty.
