Dress For Three People 2016

Overborne is a video work of two three-minute performances displayed facing each other on opposite walls. Both depict a similar scene: Me, holding a bucket above my head for three minutes as water, in one, and sand, in the other, gets poured into the bucket. The work is essentially an endeavour to come to terms with personal struggle, vulnerability, and self-initiated entrapment. The videos play on repeat, enacting a Sisyphus-like scenario wherein trying not to spill the water/sand is eternally futile, as viewers are subjected again and again to the rising and falling evidence of physical pain in the facial expressions and body language of myself. The futility of this action is an attempt to understand inner struggle by experiencing intense physical struggle, making myself vulnerable in order to accept and take responsibility for my flaws. Overborne also speaks to an interaction between natural and built environments, depicting inner turmoil as a non-place, existing both within the beautiful and the grimy. Adding to this, the earth/water binary depicted in the opposing scenes suggests an enduring sense of self-critique despite external changes. The two videos are the same, but different in location, facing each other in a reenactment of my own self-examination and ruthless comparison of myself to others.
