Adventure Comics #395, July 1970. Cover by Curt Swan and Murphy Anderson (Swanderson).
This was the first comic book starring Supergirl that I ever purchased. She had been mentioned or made cameo appearances in other comics I had read, but I didn’t really know much about her.
The Heroine in the Haunted House is actually the second story in the issue, and featured great work by artist Kurt Schaffenberger. That story was also my first introduction to the Phantom Zone and the criminals that reside in it, as well as the first time I ever encountered a Kryptonian thought beast!
Unfortunately, the story ends on a cliff-hanger. I bought this issue in Canada whilst on vacation with my family. When we returned home I scoured the few stores near me that carried comics, but I never did find the next issue. In fact, by the time I found another issue of Adventure Comics on the stands, Supergirl had vacated the book and Black Orchid was the main star (albeit briefly, issues #428-430, August to December 1973).
It would not be until many, many years later, when comic book shops began springing up as a result of the direct market, that I was able to find Adventure Comics #396 in a back issue bin and finally find out how the story ended.
