Okay, so Avengers: Twilight.
It's kinda weird to see a dystopia so clearly demarcated by right-wing authoritarianism but lacking a direct condemnation of the ideology behind it. Zdarsky was never particularly politically inclined in his comics, but if you're writing a dystopian Avengers comic, you'd think he would bother addressing at least some of the politics behind it. Instead, it feels somewhat shallow because it targets "the government" and "the media" but never directly addresses the real-life issues with them that lead to the future we see in Twilight.
Don't get me wrong, it's a fine comic, but it lacks the more biting political commentary that, in my opinion, should define this sort of alternative universe retelling. It feels like the myriad of Hunger Games clones that lacked even the willingness to try to tackle any sort of politics with their absurd dystopias.
I really dig the way Immortal Hulk expanded on the idea of the Hulk transformations as metaphor for the emotional states of the characters, and I think my favourite subtle way this is done is how Bruce Banner's transformations are these ugly, messy painful ordeals that look like he and the Hulk are wrestling for control and clawing to be free of each other.
And meanwhile all of Betty's transformations are instantaneous, happening in the cuts between panels with no transition stage because the line between her and Harpy isn't just thinner, there IS no line.

Been rewatching some episodes of Scott Pilgrim Takes off and man, it's impressive how easily this show achieves its goal (to give depth to the exes) while completely fumbling the bag on being an engaging mystery.
On an episode-by-episode basis, it's a great show. Once you consider how Ramona never really gets closer to finding Scott and that nothing her or the rest of the gang do matters due to him just coming back on his own, the show kind of falls apart as a whole. I enjoy it as something fun and interesting done with characters I love, but I try not to think too much about its overarching plot because it's severely lacking and very anticlimactic.

I love leaving silly little comic references in my silly little dissertation.
Re-reading the original 8-issue The Incredible Hulk run and it's amazing how strong a critique the first issue is of nuclear power being weaponized by the government.
Then the second issue is about toad men.

someone: hey I noticed this thing you did in your writing!
me, kicking my feet up flirtatiously: oh??? do you want to hear my thoughts on why I did that? do you want a play-by-play of the language choices in every related sentence? do you want an exhaustive breakdown of The Themes???
It's Kim.

The fact that Marcille's dumb gay ass keeps going "well at least we can't eat this monster" only for Senshi to go "guys you're not gonna believe this we can eat this monster" each and every time has me on the floor.

Dr Starnge: Fall Sunrise is such a beautiful trip of a comic.
I remember reading this thing while waiting for a minor exam in the hospital and I fully blame it for the fact that I had an insane anesthesia trip --we're talking Tool music video levels-- in which I saw the Indian deity Ganesha.
Dungeon Meshi officially joins the ranks of works that I get into fully believing that the main ship is not going to be that obvious but then has me going "oh. these people are gay" upon seeing them interact for the first time.
Shoutout to Adventure Time and Arcane too.
