In Criminal Minds episode 4x01, Hotch tells Derek he didn't give his recommendation to Derek because he thinks Derek doesn't quite trust anybody yet. Specifically, he also asks Derek if he should drive, which symbolically would mean that Derek has to put his life in Hotch's hands, therefore trusting him. Hotch offers to drive to give Derek the opportunity to prove he trusts someone else with his life, but Derek refuses and ends up driving.

An episode later, 4x02, at the end after they've solved the case, again they have to drive to the airport, and the team (JJ, Emily and Spencer) are making fun of Derek for not liking to ask for directions.

Right after, Derek throws the keys to Spencer, telling him to drive.

moreid established relationship headcanons

at first derek is careful of physical contact because he knows spencer is not the biggest fan. this doesn’t last long. soon he finds out spencer is actually incredibly clingy. he confronts derek like hello? what’s that about? so turns out spencer reid loves physical touch (when it comes to derek). random small touches while at work, their knees brushing against each other, their hands momentarily touching.

at home? they could be cuddling and spencer will still say “you’re not close enough”

they keep their relationship private but not secret. they don’t let it interfere with work but that doesn’t mean they act any colder while they’re on the job.

there’s no pda but garcia definitely tries to make it happen. she has chanted ‘kiss kiss kiss’ one too many times but they never do it.

when they go out with the team tho it's full relationship mode. (yes garcia cheers the first time she sees them kiss)

derek brushes off anybody who tries hitting on him, the words ‘my boyfriend’ escapes his lips awfully fast. the team keeps record on how many seconds or sentences it gets him to mention spencer

when spencer gets hit on is a whole other thing. does he mention derek? absolutely. but he doesnt pick up on being hit on. he’s not mentioning his boyfriend purposely but because he simply loves talking about him.

now, getting back to work: as i said, they keep it professional but they’re still menaces. the teasing and jokes that pre-existed their relationship are still there. (like the ‘don’t make me smack you in front of all these people’ scene and the ‘dont listen to him garcia he’s all talk’ jet scene)

spencer doesn’t mind the way derek speaks with garcia, he knows that’s how they communicate. 

“oh babygirl you know i love you” “why dont you show me?” what startles the two of them is spencer chiming in. “sound fun, let me know if you need a third.”

after that he doesn’t always join in on their jokes but he loves the look on their faces when he does.

they’ve never discussed it out loud but they try being together while on the field. they both want the other in their sight. 

if you’re familiar with the “blah blah blah proper name place name backstory stuff” sound, this is what plays in derek’s head when spencer starts spitting loads of random fun facts / info. (he loves it and he hears everything he has to say.)

when he starts info dumping while eating, derek takes the fork and almost feeds spencer. “all that talking and no eating. you’ll run out of energy mid-rambling.” “that’s actually unlikely, i don’t think—“

spencer joins derek during work out sessions. not to work out himself but… for scientific purposes. occasionally he brings a book but he never really reads. he’s busy derek-watching.

as pay back to niche references spencer makes, derek starts making niche pop culture references. uttering “mama im in love with a criminal” during a case was his favorite moment because spencer never guessed it was a song and started sharing his personal opinion on hybristophilia.

established relationship edition

derek tries to shut spencer up by kissing him but spencer just keeps talking in between kisses

when they travel for work derek occasionally buys two pairs of socks for spencer. he keeps one sock per pair to mismatch them and then give them to spencer

at some point he starts following a theme like he has to find famous paintings socks or bird socks etc etc and when he deems spencer owns enough of one theme he moves on to a different one

spencer falls asleep on the couch a lot and derek always carries him to bed. spencer wakes up confused every single time not remembering falling asleep in the first place

derek joins him on the couch and they uncomfortably sleep all over each other. both their backs hurt in the morning “what made you think that’d be a good idea?” “it seemed cute last night”

they both don’t believe in astrology but spencer learns about it just to piss derek off. smth would happen to annoy him and spencer would tell him “it’s probably ‘cause mercury’s in retrograde”

spencer’s sitting in the kitchen when derek enters. “good morning, what are we reading?” he walks over smiling and glances over spencer’s shoulders. “your horoscope, it says you’re entering an era full of changes” “oh yeah? does it say anything about breakups?” derek teased. “no but it does say you should give your boyfriend a morning kiss”

spencer never sings in the shower so derek blasts music each time he’s showering. derek himself starts singing along and does this every time until he gets spencer to join him

when they go out for a run (or more accurately when derek convinces spencer to tag along) derek will speed up just to annoy spencer but he never goes far he always comes back a minute later.

also spencer’s out of breath because he won’t stop talking. “you’re supposed to be running your legs not your mouth”

when derek cooks, spencer likes watching him. he usually sits on the counter which ends up in them making out. derek kicks him out eventually because he knows he’ll never cook otherwise

other times he’s just peacefully hanging around in the kitchen but derek still prefers not having an audience. “i can physically feel you staring” he says with his back facing spencer. “can’t help it, i love the view” “you’re stressing me out” “why, im not making any remarks” “but you are making them in your head aren’t you” “well that’s none of your concern” derek gives him a glare

derek challenges him to make the food himself. “okay let me see what you’ve got mister ramsey” “that’s rather unwise” “why? put all this knowledge to use” spencer tries to get out of it by saying “it’s like basketball: just because i can break down your strategy doesn’t mean you’d see me in the court.”

In the pilot Extreme Aggressor (yes!!! moreid in the first ep!!!!!) Derek wears a long coat throughout the ep. It is black and covers more than his typical suit jackets or any of his other regular outerwear does. He wears a suit jacket under it, and then a dress shirt. You can see in the second picture here when he's sleeping that he took off his suit jacket, which is over the couch. Spencer wears his fbi windbreaker in this episode, which you can see at his feet when he sleeps (notice the yellow bit!) No one else in this episode has a coat that they took off that could cover that much of Reid's body (remember, they are both ~6ft!). Reid also nuzzles the coat crazy style.

I'd also like to note that Spencer often holds himself/something to his chest as he sleeps. so it is possible he wanted derek's jacket because it likely has a nice texture. however, since spencer has a pillow and derek is asleep sitting up w/ files in hand (Something he never does, as he prefers to be in a self-protective pose when sleeping on the jet, typically with music) I think it is most likely that: spencer intended to sleep, and was not holding anything. He couldve used his own jacket if he was cold, but instead it is at his feet. Derek put his suit jacket on spencer, either worried about him getting cold or just wanting him to have some kind of blanket. spencer holds it in his sleep and derek passes out on accident.

There is some info you must know for this second one. The first is that Up until this point (s2-e4) Derek owns and rewears 3 suit jackets. The first is a dark grey, the second is a light grey, and the third is navy (below).

at the start of ep we see morgan in his dark blue suit jacket. he is wearing a red shirt without a jacket on the jet, but we know that he has this jacket with him somewhere because he wore it at the round table. Derek sometimes will change on or before the jet, but it can be assumed that he puts whatever else in his go-bag. Spencer did Not wear a jacket this ep, he only wore his shirts. now look who is using derek's blue suit jacket as a blanket... again.... while sleeping beside him..... Likely another instance of Derek covering spencer in his sleep, though he noticeably intended to rest here. (Hotch also wears a suit jacket but the one reid is using has a noticiable Blue hue to it that can only come from Morgan!)
