There’s a question that’s been bugging me for the longest time. What energy source do worker drones run on? Obviously they get their energy from somewhere (conservation of matter and all that). But even after 4 episodes, we still don’t know what actually powers them. So, I took the liberty of going through some possible ideas of what the fuel source for worker drones may be.

My first thought was just standard electrical charging, but I’m unable to think of a way in which drones are able to actually procure watts, especially since there probably aren’t any operating electrical facilities after a nuclear apocalypse. Ok, that’s one down.

Perhaps something non-renewable? A “core” or whatever that powers the drone for a predetermined amount of time before losing all charge? But then how would new drones be created? nope.

Consuming organic matter? We’ve seen multiple references to drones drinking “something”, specifically from a coffee mug. This can be seen in the pilot where (while admittedly played for laughs) Khan is seen drinking from a “#1 Dad” mug, as well as in episode 2, when the worker drone who is tricked by J into thinking they are doing a murder investigation tries drinking from a hologram coffee mug.

We know that whatever substance they’re drinking isn’t water or water based, as it’s been established drones cannot safely interact with water. The posters in the nurses office in the pilot as well as the sign near the punch bowl in episode 3 make specific references to the fact that water will kill drones.

So water based liquids are out of the question, and assumedly oil as well, (since cannibalism and all that). So what could these drones be consuming? Unfortunately, I have yet to come up with any answers. I’m sure someone else might find this information useful though…

However, the idea that intrigued me the most was solar energy. I like it because the idea of worker drones relying on solar energy could be seen as a narrative opposition to murder drones which burn up in direct sunlight. Also, it would explain why any worker drones would ever need to be outside in the first place. Why make a door if you’re trying to make sure no one gets in? It’d make much more sense to just close themselves off from the surface entirely.

Am I totally off the mark? Have I missed some obscure Reddit ama where Liam answers this exact question? Am I looking too deep into surface level jokes? Probably. Regardless, I still thought these observations might prove to be useful to other theory crafters and the like (or at the very least make for a nice headcanon).
