I don’t recall them ever saying it in the English dub of the anime. Is it said in the sub, the manga, or did the author/creator say it at some point? How do we know it’s canon?

You know that Doji original name is Daidouji, and that Ryo’s is Ryuusei ?
It looks like the translators went off “Pff ! Adults ! Who cares about them ? They don’t need big names, let’s cut them off.”
Because, while they shorten Daidouji’s and Ryuusei’s names, they keep Ryuutarou and Takanosuke, while these names have as much or more syllables. Besides, both of them have family names, which gives : Ryuutarou Fukami and Takanosuke Shishiya.
