β[Luke] is basically tailoring this projection to have maximum effect on Kylo,β Johnson explained. βHe knows that Kyloβs Achilles heel is his rage, and so thatβs why he kind of makes himself look younger, the way Kylo wouldβve last seen him in their confrontation at the temple, Β and thatβs why he decided to bring Kyloβs grandfatherβs lightsaber down there β the lightsaber that Kylo screamed at Rey, βthatβs mine, that belongs to me.ββ As far as Johnsonβs concerned, Luke believes that Anakinβs lightsaber will have a much more visceral impact on the erstwhile Ben Solo than Lukeβs own green blade.
But why did Kylo fall for his uncleβs Force Illusion when he saw Anakinβs lightsaber split in half right in front of him? Because, Johnson pointed out, he didnβt actually see it.
βWe as an audience saw thatβ¦ The truth is, we see the lightsaber split in half β Kylo sees a blinding flash of light and is knocked unconscious, and then Rey takes the lightsaber away before he wakes up,β he said. βSo if you really want to dig into it and get an explanation, you can say that he doesnβt 100 percent know what happened to the lightsaber.β
