âIâll need to bring a toothbrush here. Thatâs big.â He looked at Gigi, who had sprawled out across his lap some time within the past few minutes. âGigi is toilet trained,â He looked up, âHe doesnât need a litter box or anything.â His mind was still spiraling, going through everything he would need to do in order to make his staying in Lanford a possibility. He didnât have more than $2,000 saved up since his move. That wouldnât be anywhere close to enough to do anything but buy a new laptop. He smiled at Finn calling himself his boyfriend, wanting to reach out to him to touch him, but not quite feeling like he had enough control over his body to do that yet. This was usually the point where he was feeling some kind of physical pain, something that would allow him the opportunity to remind him he had a body in the first place. Jack looked around at his next question, taking in Finnâs ransacked apartment. He didnât answer him, instead looked down at himself as he continued to feel stupid for believing that something good would have come from those roses. For ignoring his anxiety. He regretted putting Gigi in harmâs way, for not being able to save Finnâs plants. âIâm sorry,â he whispered again, although it wasnât in regard to himself or his freak out, but in regard to everything. He looked over at his arm, at the scars there, at the memories of a time before Finn, then looked back up at his eyes as though he was asking why he hadnât hurt him. As though he didnât know there was another way to bring him back. He didnât feel like he was back, but his breathing was fluctuating between normal and waves of spiraling thoughts. âIâm not inside of myself.â
âI have an extraââ He stopped, remembering he hadnât checked the bathroom just yet, just assumed since the door had been closed. Still, he didnât think someone wouldâve taken the extra toothbrushes he left in his apartment. âI may have an extra toothbrush for you tonight, and Gigi can justâ I donât mind,â he smiled from one corner of his mouth, moving the back of his fingers down their cheek as if to keep them grounded in the present instead of letting their mind fo places. Truth was, when it came to cats, he wasnât sure about how to even be around one but he didnât mind animals of any kind and so far hadnât resulted allergic to any of them, and if he did, then he would figure it out somehow. He just didnât want Jack to worry about a thing more in that moment.Â
âDonât be sorry. You have nothing to be sorry about. Gigi is okay, and the plants... Monica told me that when plants die if youâre taking good care of them is because theyâre absorbing the curses of your enemies. I mean, they... kind of were forced to die, but maybe they just died protecting me. It was a good death,â he said, not allowing himself to get sentimental about things for one of them had to keep a cold head. He knew he was internalising his own reactions in that moment, and it would end in a weekâs long exhaustion, but he would be okay. Finn wasnât sure what Jackâs confusion was, but his eyes traveled with theirs to the scars in his arms, matching many more heâd seen on him before but never really had the nerve to ask, just to accept. His own hand moved gently over them, trying to distract their eyes and bring them back to his. âThatâs good. Thatâs something,â he nodded.Â
After a moment, Finn let out a sigh. He had to do something about the apartment before it actually drove him nuts, so in a matter of seconds he created a plan of action. âAlright, this is whatâs gonna happen,â he said, standing up and brushing up his knees. âWeâre getting youâ you bothââ he corrected himself when he saw Gigi attentive to what he was saying, ââ on the bed,â Finn didnât give Jack an option and helped them up, one hand in their back, one under their arm and helped them on the bed which was messy, but not a nightmare like the rest of the room. âStay here. Donât move. At all,â he said almost playfully and slipped out into the living room, celebrating as he found his one blanket, Jackâs favourite, still hanging from the back of the couch, and came back with it. âYouâre going to stay there and watch me. And if you need me to do something for you, youâre just going to say it, alright?â Finn said as he wrapped the blanket around Jack like they normally did. His facade of âeverything is fineâ broke the minute he turned away from Jack to look at the rest of the room. He rubbed his legs up and down and got off the bed, putting the night table back in place. âIâll get a broom,â he said and five seconds later he came back to start at least pushing things out of the way.Â
