2020’s a long way off, buuuttt ... we just booked our first two hotels for our coast-to-coast trip! Our first night on the road, we’ll be sleeping in a caboose at @wildlifeprairiepark in Illinois, and on Night 6, we’ll be calling #dogbarkparkinn in Idaho home for the night. The dog was featured on World’s Weirdest Homes and our kid lost her little mind when she saw it. I think we’re going to let that one be a surprise to end a 12-hour driving day strong. Our friends took us to an analemmatic sundial today almost in our backyard in Fairport, NY, so they get findMORweird cameos! Basically, you stand on the current month, put your hands in the air and your shadow lands on the time. (Or in our case, an hour ago because daylight savings and we missed the part that told us how to read it correctly.) It’s a fun little stop on our favorite trail. The limestone blocks are from an Erie Canal lock and the sundial was created to mark the canal’s 200th birthday. (at Fairport, New York)

Wondering where ALL the metal kazoos come from? We found it! The Original American Kazoo Co. in Eden, NY, is a tiny factory in the back of a house, churning out kazoos pretty much all week, every week. They have kazoos shaped like French horns, planes, ears of corn. You can even take a tour and make your own kazoo. All on the original 1916 equipment. Accidental weird in Ithaca! Or more like nerdy cool. It’s the Sagan Planet Walk, and it starts at the sun right in the Ithaca Commons. A block down and around the corner, you can touch a meteorite, which, yes. And then we geeked out for a while because we remembered Carl Sagan lived in Ithaca. 🌘🌑🌒 (at Ithaca, New York)

Just when I thought pancakes couldn’t get any better ... the world’s largest pancake griddle! It was really used in 1987 to make a 28’ 1” pancake in Penn Yan, NY, and now hangs on the side of Birkitt Mills, coincidentally the largest manufacturer of buckwheat products. To make the pancake, they had to mix it in a cement mixer, flip it with a crane and cook it over hot coals. And THEN it was topped with a 3-foot pat of butter and 15 gallons of maple syrup. Bonus! We were heading down N. Franklin Street on our way to check out a pirate-ship building in Watkins Glen, NY, when we passed the world’s smallest diner and yelled “THE WORLD’S SMALLEST DINER!” and then caused a minor traffic issue but everyone’s OK. And now we’ve seen the world’s smallest diner. It’s exactly what you see and no more. A little googling says it opened only last year, is an itty-bitty 34 square feet and holds only four people. Someone had left a note in the window telling owner Gerry Collins they hope to see him soon. We do, too. We’re totally coming back for some breakfast on a bun. (at Watkins Glen, New York)

Jack the Ripper *might* be buried near our hometown. So obviously. Francis Tumblety is one of the best Ripper suspects, being basically a quack doctor whose time in London corresponded with the murders. He was even arrested before posting bail and sneaking back to the US. He was cleared after a London murder while he was here, but turns out, that one wasn’t a Ripper murder after all. Spring is officially here and that means we’re officially back on! Because we live in NY and it’s really hard to get to all the weird when it’s covered in snow or 200 icy miles away. Speaking of hundreds of miles away ... I’m just going to say it. Stonewall Jackson’s ARM is buried in Locust Grove, VA. Now you know. The rest of him is buried in Lexington, but his arm went first (by a few days). He was accidentally shot by how own troops and his arm had to be amputated. It was dug up at least once and moved, because whose arm isn’t? The day we visited was muggy and misty, and it’s a bit of a walk along a Civil War battleground to get to the stone. We try to hit at least one cool/creepy antique shop whenever we’re in a new city, and they can be a little hit or miss. @anastaciasphilly was a HIT! This little gem is absolutely as cool, weird and offbeat as we wanted it to be. You can literally buy teeth for $1 each. (We didn’t. Wanted to, but I couldn’t figure out where I’d keep them?) Their collection is fascinating and they were super nice. A perfect complement to our stop at the Mutter and worth your time if you’re in Philly.
