The Pitt acted like the sea.Â
Busy hours and waning slow periods were the waves. Patients, nurses, and doctors walked as though they were fish, constantly swimming through the hoards of schools and catastrophes, not needing to keep their head above water because that's exactly where they thrived. They found purpose in bobbing and floating and flicking their tails to get from one room to another. It had its obstacles, seaweed hoards of poles and monitors and gurneys, but when night came, the Pitt settled into lapping motions instead of crashing roars.Â
However, the calmer waters meant it was primed for the bigger fish to swim cleanly, jaws chomping at whoever dared to get in their current.Â
Known to all, the Pitt had a few big fish to worry about. Victoria knew to steer clear of her mother, Dr. Shamsi, and her biting words. When Garcia got called down, Dennis turned heel and hid in triage (safety in numbers). Even Robby, the very top of the pecking order in the emergency department, vanished when he caught the hint of Gloria coming down the elevator.Â
Yet, like all oceans, some fish weren't lucky enough to swim away fast enough. In all instances, everyone never wanted to get caught by the PTMC's very own great white: Brendon Park.Â
"Look alive, Santos, we got an incoming," Jack stated as he passed the sleepy-looking R2, fresh from pulling the first half of her second night rotation.Â
Trinity blinked wearily before pushing up from the table. She'd been seated during a lull in waves that seemed to always happen between the hours of 1 and 3 am. Jack had warned that things got weird after the sun went down, but most she'd seen was a puking toddler and a man who came in complaining of sleep issues.Â
"What do we have?" she asked after finding a place next to the older attending. "And please tell me it's interesting, cause so far I haven't seen the weirdest or wildest cases come through. I'd hate to see that your little pep talk is full of errors."Â
Jack barked out a laugh. "Trust me; it only gets weirder from here."Â
"Don't jinx us, please," Ellis joined in, stopping on Jack's unoccupied side.Â
"Those don't exist!" Shen called out as he rounded a corner before disappearing back into a room.Â
Trinity's jaw popped as she yawned. "I need something fast paced or I'm going to fall asleep standing up."Â
"We can always have you organize the third storage room. I don't think it's been redone since I started here," Jack mentioned.Â
"So, like, way back in the medieval era?"Â
Parker raised her eyebrows and smirked at the brunette. "Ooo-hoo-hoo, Abbot you set yourself up for that one."Â
Jack rolled his eyes. "Try the third dynasty. Pretty sure I saw a rat go in there once and it never left."Â
"I'll take standing up, thank you."Â
"Incoming trauma goes straight into room 1," Lena announced.Â
The sliding doors to the ambulance bay brought a gust of cool wind before offering a patient and two paramedics to the small group of doctors. On the gurney laid a man in his thirties whose face had gone ashen, eyes not even visible.Â
"We got a thirty-two-year old male. Partial traumatic amputation, left lower extremity at the mid femur. Clean cut considering he was run over by roadside milling equipment approximately twenty-two minutes ago. Significant blood loss on scene," one of the paramedics said once they got within ear range. "Detached extremity is here. Packaged separately and wrapped in saline gauze, double bagged, transported on ice but not in direct contact."Â
Trinity noted the bag that sat near the patient's remaining foot. It reminded her of one of those goldfish bags you got for winning a fair game.Â
Jack stepped forward and grabbed the side of the gurney, helping roll the man straight into Trauma Room 1. Behind him, he heard the normal sounds of gloves snapping on before both Trinity and Parker joined him.Â
"On my count," he ordered. "One, two, threeâ" He grunted under the weight of the man as they slid him over onto the bed.Â
"The tourniquet was applied high and tight to the left thigh around 7 minutes after the accent. One CAT failed, second CAT secured on the way over. Hemorrhage controlled after the second application," the second paramedic stated while he began to wheel the gurney away.Â
Jack looked over the man. "What's his pressure?"Â
"Last manual was eighty-four over fifty. Heart rate one-forty-eight. Respiratory thirty-two. Sp-Oxygen ninety-four percent on fifteen liters non-rebreather. GCS fourteen. Lost consciousness on the way over."Â
"Fluids?"Â
"Minimal crystalloids. Two-fifty LR. We started whole bloodâone unit in progress. One gram TXA given over ten minutes."Â
Jack smiled and nodded. "Excellent."Â
Trinity leaned over the man with her stethoscope already off and bell pressing into his chest. "Airway's intact. Breath sounds equal bilaterally."Â
"Femoral pulse right side weak," Parker called out, two fingers pressed into the man's right upper thigh before moving up to his wrist. "Radial's thready."Â
"Pressure's seventy-eight over forty-six," Mateo called out near the head of the bed.Â
"He's hemorrhagic until proven otherwise," Jack breathed, hands moving to gently pull back what was left of the man's pant legs. "Let's cut the tourniquet down enough for me to visualize."Â
"Dr. Abbot, you think they'd just cauterize the leg back in your day?" Trinity bit with a smirk.Â
"Nah," he argued, "they'd just wrap it and pray infection didn't set in before harvest."Â
Parker snipped slowly at the tourniquet, and blood instantly welled through the mess of flesh and bone.Â
"Back up and tighten it," Jack said, halting Parker from going any further. "That's arterial, and can someone page ortho? This looks like it'd be right up their alley."Â
"Please tell me Park's not on shift tonight," Trinity muttered, already walking over to the red phone mounted on the wall.Â
"Well, if you hear the Jaws theme song when they put you on hold, you'll know."Â
While Trinity talked with upstairs, Jack and Parker did their best to pack the stump as much as possible, combat gauze soaking up red as fast as they put it on.Â
It couldn't have been more than five minutes later when the hiss of the trauma room's doors filled the air, the automatic sensor holding long enough for whoever to slip through. Jack's heart beat wildly as he held the gauze, trying not to think about his own experience of being on the receiving end of the painful pressure.Â
"What do you have for me, Abbot?"Â
If the room could have groaned, it would have caused ripples by the sheer sound, because, of course, Brendon Park just had to be the one to swim through. Trinity glanced up at him, eyes tracking the way he immediately hovered over their work like a shark coasting around its prey.Â
"Partial traumatic amputation to his left leg. Whatever machine he got under cut clean through his femur. Leg was bagged on site, and blood flow is slightly waning under the gauze and consistent pressure."Â
Park didn't seem all that impressed, and his eye brow raised when he spotted the fair-fish bag full of amputated leg sitting on a tray to the side. He narrow eyed the way Jack's hands almost wrapped completely around the stump, gloves speckled with blood that managed to seep through.Â
"You're going to damage the vessels if you hold on that hard," he muttered. "Thought you attendings knew better."Â
Jack fought the urge to roll his eyes. "The pressure is what's keeping this man from bleeding out. But by all means, I can lighten up if you want to play Legos and 'click the leg back in place' on a dead body."Â
"You're the ones who paged me," he bit, teeth chomping around the word. "Unfortunately we can't all be surgeons, or maybe this ER would know how to perfectly pack a partial traumatic amputation."Â
"Now, now, let's play nice, Park," a new voice joined over the hiss of the trauma doors. "Without the ER, we wouldn't be standing here now would we?"Â
Now, Jack's heart beat wildly for a different reason. In a small glance, his eyes settled on the familiar figure of the Pitt's stand-in night shift Orthopedic Surgeon when Walsh had the shift off.Â
"Oh, boy," Parker whispered beside him. She nudged Trinity slightly, body twisting so she could be near the R2's ear. "You asked for wild, and, well, it's about to get wild."Â
Trinity barely processed her words as she fixated on the woman who just walked in. She couldn't note how put together she looked with her hair tucked neatly, gray roots peaking through a very expensive looking hair dye. Her white coat was crisp, and Trinity could only guess that it had been tailored with the way it hugged perfectly at her shoulders and waist. If she let herself, Trinity would be drooling, yet, the glimmer of a pair of rings that could probably pay off her entire student debt held her back from sputtering out some illy planned pick-up line.Â
"Nice of you to join us," Park gritted out, clearly not happy with the new addition. "But I had this handled.Â
You hummed lowly while you looked over the leg yourself and the hands around it. "Sure you did if by having it handled you meant berating Dr. Abbot and his more than capable team."Â
"His pressure is way off, and if he keeps it up, the leg isn't going to be able to attach back perfectlâ"Â
"Aht, aht, aht," you tutted like talking to a child. "You're done talking, because obviously you can't tell the right amount of pressure from the wrong."Â
You stepped closer to the bed and leaned over the railing, never hovering but making sure your presence was noted.Â
"If you'd taken a breath and took the chance to actually look at the patient instead of wondering if he could be another gold start to your chart," you stated calmly, "you'd find that Dr. Abbot is currently keeping the femoral artery at aroundâ" You leaned in closer to see just how tightly Jack's fingers held the gauze in place. "â250 to 300 mmHgs of the standard pressure needed."Â
Jack had to keep himself from blushing under your praise and keep concentrating on, just as you said, the needed standard pressure. He guessed that Park would back off, however, the bigger man wasn't one to ever give up the last word.Â
"No offenseâ"Â
"None taken," you slyly interrupted.Â
Park huffed, visibly irritated the more he stood there. "But clearly, they should have paged me the moment this man was wheeled in instead of trying to play hero and cut off the bleeding." He crossed his arms and puffed his chest. "They're not surgeons; they'reâ"Â
You held up a hand. "I'll stop you right there, Brendon. Yes, they might not have the specialty experience we both have, but they are more than equipped and competent to handle a partial traumatic amputation." Your lip crinkled in a small sneer. "Dr. Abbot is also more knowledgeable about this type of injury than the both of us, or do I have to remind you that he's lived through something like this."Â
Elation bloomed in the pit of your stomach as you watched Park swallow thickly, but you were far from done.Â
"And, as someone who volunteers as a S.W.A.T medic after spending countless hours down here, Dr. Abbot has undergone thousands of hours of medical, tactical, and physical training. His muscles are earned through hard work, unlike the ones you like to boast on your Instagram after doing a few sit ups and curls to increase the blood flow of your arms that are more for aesthetics than actual strength."Â
Jack was hard.
He was so incredibly hard, cock already pushing against the front of his scrub pants. He just prayed that Parker and Trinity would continue looking at you with stars in their eyes and not down at his . . . predicament.Â
Without moving, you held out your hand, palm up towards the ceiling. "Can someone hand me the case tablet? I'm taking over this, and I will personally be scrubbing in myself."Â
Park blanched at that, body finally squirming under your unwavering eyes. "You can'tâ"Â
"I can't . . . what, exactly? Take over a case while I am currently your superior as the chief orthopedic attending on call?" you shot back while your fingers curled around the tablet Mateo handed over. "Because that's exactly what I'm doing." You glanced down at the screen before looking back up into Park's dark, blue eyes. âYou're more than welcome to observe, Dr. Park, but please, never insult me or any of PTMC's doctors ever again, or I will make sure that you're stuck wrapping soft tissue sprains for months."Â
You turned around with a smile on your face, demeanor completely the opposite of what you'd just shown. "Thank you three for making sure this man didn't bleed out on the spot. We'll prep an operating theater and get him transferred up shortly. Best of luck for the rest of the night."Â
Your steps were light as you walked away, however you couldn't help but let out an Hoo-Ahh! over your shoulder.Â
Jack watched in deep satisfaction that Park didn't even attempt to say anything else, choosing to walk away while he still held the ability to operate in the future. The mechanical doors hissed and closed off the room from the rest of the Pitt.Â
Only the monitors kept beeping continually, filling the otherwise silent room. Jack tilted his head down and closed his eyes while he took a deep breath.Â
After a moment, Trinity was the first to speak. "Who the fuck was that? I think my world's been rocked."Â
Jack looked back up, hazel eyes trained in the direction that you disappeared off into. He swallowed the pooling saliva down in one gulp before answering. "My wife."Â
¡ ¡ â ¡âśÂˇ â ¡ ¡
The surgical cap tied tightly around your forehead itched, hair underneath poking and being pulled an at odd angle as a result of your haste to put it on. Park had overstepped, and you needed to show him that he wasn't the biggest fish in the Pitt's ocean, because that title belonged to you.Â
Jack would probably laugh at it all later due to your enjoyment of underwater documentaries and fascination with orcas, especially with how they hunted and preyed upon sharks. You'd seen the way he had tried to not look at you for very long down in the trauma room. The thought of him being embarrassed quickly passed through your mind before you shook your head.Â
He was never one to be ashamed of being your husband, often boasting at the fact that he put a ring on your finger before anyone else could. He loved you fierce and hard but also soft and sweet, so him looking away had to be because he was focused on making sure the man didn't bleed out before you could get his leg put back together with ease.Â
The hall to the surgical room was empty as you stripped from your gown and gloves and pushed them down into the nearest hazard bin. Your footsteps echoed while you walked toward the elevator, wanting to go back down and at least give Parker and Dr. Santos the good news. However, the moment you passed by one of the empty recovery rooms, a hand reached out, grabbed hold of your arm and tugged you in.Â
"What the fuck!" you shouted, voice coming out in a screech.Â
To your right, the door shut, and the motion-sensor lights flickered on, revealing the person who had yanked you. You sighed in relief.Â
"Hi," Jack whispered, pinning you to the wall, chest pressed against yours.Â
"Jack, what the hell are you doing up here?" you hissed. "I always come down to give you the update."Â
He said nothing and tucked his face into your neck. His lips lightly grazed your pulse point before his tongue peeked out and ran hotly along your jaw. Your hands instantly flew up and sunk deep into his greying curls.Â
"Jack?" you questioned again. "Wha-what are you doing?"Â
"Just loving on my wife," he muttered, teeth now gently nipping at your skin. "Can't a husband do that?"Â
You barked out a laugh that quickly turned into a moan as he sucked harshly. "I mean, he can. But normally he doesn't until after we get home."Â
Jack's neediness sent questions washing through your body as he slotted his thick thigh between your legs. Another moan punched out at the feeling, your scrub material bunching in delicious pressure against your heat.Â
"Jack," you breathily sighed. "Baby, we have work; we can wait and pick this up later."Â
"Can't," he bit, lips and teeth still attacking whatever inch of your neck he could reach. "Can't wait. Been hard since you left."Â
"Since I left?" you echoed, mind spinning until it clicked. "Wait, Jackâ"Â
He hummed in an answer.Â
"Don't tell me you got hard because I told off Park in the ER."Â
Jack stilled against you and sighed heavily. "Is it really surprising that I'm turned on because my incredibly hot wife knocked asshole Park the Shark down a couple of pegs while simultaneously singing my praises?"Â
He pulled back enough that your eyes met his, the hazel hues already swimming with heat. Internally, you battled the pros and cons of having letting Jack continue, but obviously the pros definitely outweighed the cons, and he noticed the moment all fight drained out of you.Â
"Fine," you gave in, "but you need to hurry before either you or I get paged, and you're left with blue balls for another four hours."Â
"Hurry is my middle name," he quipped, facing going back in to mauling your neck.Â
You rolled your eyes. "No it's Waynefucking jeez.," the comeback dying into a moan half-way up your throat.Â
Jack's right hand rested against the length of your throat while his left danced along the waistline of your pants, fingers teasingly dipping below and toying with the hem of your underwear. He drew another gasp from your lips when he pushed his thigh up higher, the muscle nesting against your core. Taking your open mouth to his advantage, his hot, slick tongue dipped deep between your teeth and licked around. His chest rumbled in a moan at the taste of you.Â
While he kept your mouth distracted, his hand went further down your underwear, knuckles brushing against your navel until his fingertips found exactly what they were looking for. He couldn't help but groan at the feeling of your wet, sticky arousal already pooling between your folds.Â
"You're already so fucking wet. How long have you been like this, sweetheart?" he panted after pulling back. "Did you like putting big ole Park in his place while your husband watched? Cause I enjoyed every minute of it."Â
To show his enjoyment, Jack thrusted up against your stomach, his hardness evident through his own pants. Your eyes widened at the size of his bulge, cunt clenching with the thought of him putting it right into you. You whimpered loudly into the air, head tilted back to rest against the wall.Â
His pointer finger circled around your throbbing clit in soft, minuscule motions and drew pleasured breaths from your lungs. When you started rocking back and forth, he reached a bit lower before sinking two fingers into your sopping, fluttering hole. The thick and sudden intrusion had you whining.Â
"Jack! Ooh-ohh-oooohhh," you sputtered as the tips of both fingers found your sweet spot with experience swiftness. Stars dotted your vision, and your stomach and thighs tightened. "Feels good shiittt."Â
"Yeah?" Jack asked as his hips continued thrusting up into your center, the band in his gut drawing tighter. He could practically feel the clenching of your cunt around his throbbing length when you tightened around his fingers. "You close, sweetheart?"Â
You nodded. "C-close. So, so, so, so close; you're gonna make me cum."Â
Your words had Jack whimpering against your neck, eyes pinching closed to not blow his load prematurely. He needed to make you cum before even thinking of letting go himself.Â
He withdrew his hand in order to push your scrubs and underwear down, giving him more room to thrust his fingers upward while thumbing at your clit. Without the extra layer, your slick arousal dripped down his hand and spotted his dark scrubs.Â
"There we goooo," he drew out, words raspy between his gasps. "Soaking my hand and my pants, sweetheart."Â
You were getting close, and your hips canted harder to meet his fingers. Your inner thighs clenched around his hand, and a high-pitched whine squeezed between your teeth.Â
"I'm gonna cum!" you keened. "Gonna-gonna-shitfuckfuckfuckfuck! Jack!"Â
Your stomach flipped as your walls clamped down tightly around Jack's fingers. To draw out your high, he continued to circle your bundle of nerves and shallowly push in his fingers. He, however, didn't stop grinding against you, and while you were focused on feeling every hot dip of pleasure from climax, Jack grunted twice before his hips stilled and his cum spilled from his leaking tip into his boxers, soaking though to stain his scrubs.Â
You sighed dreamily and held Jack's wrist to stop his motions, your core becoming too sensitive for him to continue. Your chest heaved against Jack's, and he leaned back into languidly kiss at your mouth.Â
"Never," you managed to get out between kisses. "Never thought my husband would have a competency kink. Learn something new every day."Â
"Like I said: it was hot," he said.Â
You smirked when he finally met his eyes. "Hot enough to make you cum in your pants, I guess. What are your doctors going to think when you go back down in different color scrubs than you had on before?"Â
Jack laughed loudly. "I think Trinity will be too distracted because you are definitely her type, and it won't be the worst thing Ellis has ever seen."Â
Heat flooded your cheeks at the remembering of the one time Parker caught you and Jack actually fucking in an on call room. She teased the two of you for months after you promised to help her out with getting a shot at a surgical fellowship.Â
Once your pants were back in place, you smooshed close back into Jack's chest, cheek squished against his pec while his hands rubbed up and down your back in slow motions. Aftercare in a recovery room could never be the same as snuggles in bed, but Jack would be damned if he let you go without a little post-coital hugging and kissing.
You had just gotten his lips back on yours when the pager at his side buzzed to life. He pulled back with a groan.
"Duty calls."
"Duty always has the worst timing," you grumbled. "See you in four hours and then round two at home?"
Jack smirked and tapped the side of your ass. "Maybe I'll make sure Park comes back down so you can yell at him again."
You snorted, hand coming up to slap at your nose. "Your foreplay preferences are so weird. Maybe I should yell at you. I think you'd like that, Dr. Abbot."
With that, you slipped out the door and back into the empty hallway, leaving Jack in yet another blushy mess and length twitching at the thought of you talking down at him like you did for Park.

The bright lights of PTMC are a stark contrast to the dark sky outside. The paramedics roll you in feeling more embarrassment than pain,
â⌠Twenty four years old, bystanders saw her trip and fall. Sheâs got a deep laceration on her left forearm. Possible concussion as well.â the paramedic recites as a few doctors and nurses approach,
âI told them I was fine but they wouldnât let me go unless I went to the hospital.â There's a tinge of irritation in your voice as the paramedics hand you off,
âYeah, thatâs what they all say until someone ends up seizing.â The paramedic settles you in a room. You hear your name recited by one of the doctors entering,
âIâm Doctor Abbot, mind if I take a look at that cut on your arm?â you hold your arm out as he starts unwrapping the bandages. The sight of your skin cut open makes you feel uneasyâ maybe the paramedics were right and you did need to be taken to the ER. You quickly turn your head away the sight of your open forearm,
âYou okay?â Jack asks as he tries to look at the wound,
âYeah, just bad with blood and stuff.â you mumble. Jack understands when patients feel uneasy with the blood and gore of the ER, but in this case he was having trouble examining your shaking arm with the way youâve turned.Â
Jack calls Mateo over as he walks to the opposite side of the bed that youâre now facing. He pulls a chair up so the two of you are face to face,
âWeâre going to administer some pain meds so we can clean the wound and stitch you back up, okay?â You nod at his statement,
âYouâre not gonna pass out on me, are you?â he says with a small smirk forming on his face,
âNo, I donât think so.â
âGood, now keep your eyes on me.â you look up at him, maintaining eye contact while he nods at Mateo to proceed. You watch as his eyes flit between Mateoâs work and your eyes. Thereâs a sharp pain that shoots through your arm as the pain meds are administered. You wince and shut your eyes in pain,
âYouâre doing so good. Hard part is done, just need to clean it up and put some stitches in. Just keep your eyes on me.â he says with a low voice.Â
You keep your eyes on him, studying his face to distract yourself. His silver hair pairs so well with the deep wrinkles around his eyes and forehead that you canât help but focus on. Thereâs something about him that looks incredibly familiar to you. Heâs a complete stranger, yet itâs like youâve met or seen him before somewhere. Jack catches you staring a bit too intently and smiles,
âHowâd you fall anyways?â You sigh in embarrassment as you get taken out of your daydream,
âI wore these stupid new shoes. Theyâre a size too big and I think I cut my arm when I fell. Can't even return them anymore.â you frown as you ramble on. Jack chuckles lightly,
âDid you hit your head? Any nausea, dizziness or pain?â He asks as he pulls out a small flashlight, shining them at your pupils,
âI hit my head on the pavement but I only feel a little bit of pain. Nothing else.â You lightly tap where the pain is and Jack hums in acknowledgment. In the corner of his eye, Mateo nods and indicates that heâs finished up,
âIâm gonna order you a CT scan so we can double check nothing else is going on. Come back in two weeks to get the stitches removed.â Jack says as he stands up. Mateo has already left the room while Jack sticks around and adds the order to your chart,
âThank you, Doctor Abbot.â
âJack.â He corrects you quickly.Â
âJack.â You repeat. He likes the way you say his name, except heâs not sure when heâll hear it again.Â
âË๨ৠâ.ËÂ
You were supposed to spend the next day resting. The stitches were still fresh and the last thing you wanted to do was end up in the ER againâ except your best friend heard you came home for the Summer and all she wanted was to drag you out, catch up and get borderline blackout drunk. Part of you wanted to stay in and spend all night thinking of fake scenarios starring the night shift doctor you met the night before.Â
Youâve never really had a thing for older men before. Friends of yours have had boyfriends twice their age and you never really understood why up until you saw Jack. By the time you were discharged, he was already busy in another room so you never had a chance to say thank you or maybe ask for his number. Would he have given it to you? Was that something he did with other patients? Every âwhat ifâ ran through your mind at the thought of him. The possibility of a nearly fifty year old night shift doctor showing up at a bar with mostly twenty year olds was slim to none but you canât help but imagine what it wouldâve been like running into him.Â
A knock on the door takes you out of your fantasy. Your dadâs head pops into your room as you get ready,
âHey honey, Iâve got a friend over for dinner tonight. You donât mind, do you?â you give your dad a smile,
âNot at all. Iâm probably gonna head out soon.â your dad nods and the door shuts again.
Itâs nice to hear your dad has a friend. When you left for college, part of you felt guilty for leaving your dad on his own. It had been just the two of you for so long until he called one day to tell you all about his new friend. They played golf together on their off days, ate at sports bars and youâre convinced your dadâs new interest in joining a SWAT team was inspired by his new friend. You had seen a few pictures here and there but he never specified any name or told you much details about the actual person. He usually just referred to him as âmy buddy with the prosthetic legâ
Pittsburghâs summers are hot and humid but you throw on a jacket anyways to cover the evidence of last night from your dad. As you head down the stairs, two voices are heard laughing in the dining room. As you round the corner, youâre face to face with the night shift attending who stitched you back together the night before. It finally clicked and you realized the reason he was so familiar yesterday night was because of all the pictures your dad has shown you. Heâs got a clad black shirt on and camo pants.
Fuck me, was he this hot last night?
Jack stares back at you in just as much shock. You were wearing a tiny lavender coloured satin top that barely covered your chest and a skirt so short he swears he can see your ass poking out. In Jack's younger days it could be considered lingerieâ he's not complaining though.Â
âI donât think youâve had a chance to meet my daughter yet.â your dad says excitedly. Jack thinks about mentioning the run in at PTMC yesterday before you jump in,
âNo, I donât think so! But Iâve heard lots of good things.â you say with your hand reaching out. Jack shakes it gently but firmly, keeping his eyes on you the whole time,
âJack.â
âJack.â you repeat, similar to how he introduced himself yesterday,
âIsnât it a bit warm outside for a jacket?â he asks with that same smirk he gave you the night before. Jack takes a quick sip of his beer before you jump back in,
âSaw it might rain.â You knew Jack was trying to discuss the obvious stitches on your arms but you were already prepared with an excuse. Between the two of you, there was obvious undeniable tension in the roomâ your dad has never been so oblivious,
âYou sure? Didnât look like it to me.â Jack retorts,
âMaybe you should check again,â You want to wipe the stupid, hot smirk off his face the longer this conversation goes on,
âWell, if youâll excuse me, Iâve gotta meet a friend.â you say waving to the two men and heading towards the door. Your dad smiles lovingly while Jack watches your hips sway as you walk back towards the front door. He was gonna be in a lot of trouble.
âË๨ৠâ.ËÂ
Another drink goes down as you swing the glass back quickly. Thereâs a familiar burn in the back of your throat that has only gotten easier as the night has gone by. You sway your hips back and forth as the loud music fills the bar but your mind is constantly leading back to Jack. He was supposed to be someone you fantasized about for fun, knowing youâd never see him again.Â
Jack was seated at your dadâs house with similar thoughts. He remembers staring at you and studying every part of your face, knowing that you were going to be discharged and never seen again. You were pretty and a distraction from the chaos of the night shift, someone that would live only in his head.Â
You stumble out of the bar with the Uber app open. The tall buildings surrounding Pittsburgh are spinning as you try to steady yourself against a wall. You squint your eyes to focus on the app. Immediately, your eyes widen at the prices,
âA hundred dollars?!â
Some passersby look at you as you continue to stare at your phone in shock. Your dad has always been kind enough to pick you up if you needed and you were heavily debating on that now. It doesnât hurt to ask though?Â
You call your dad to see if heâs still awake. The phone rings a few times before he finally answers,
âHello?âÂ
âHey, sweetheart.â Jack says. You double check youâve called the right person before responding,
âJack? Whereâs my dad?â
âUh, heâs asleep on the couch. I was about to head out but saw you called. Figured it was an emergency and maybe you fell again.â you feel your eyes roll intuitively,
âVery funny. I was just calling to see if my dad could pick me up. Uber prices are insane right now.âÂ
âYou can afford to go out but you canât afford to get home?â Again, your eyes roll back intuitively as he continues teasing,
âI didnât expect it to be a hundred dollars for a twenty minute drive! You know what, Iâll figure it outââÂ
âNo, Iâll come pick you up. Stay where you are.â Jack cuts you off,
âI donât need your help, Jack!â He hangs up the phone without giving you a chance to say another word.
You debated on walking home or actually paying the Uber upcharge while waiting. If you were to walk home, itâs likely youâd end up back in the ER for falling over again. Paying for the uber on the other hand, didnât seem like the worst option the more you thought about it. The regret of calling your dad was starting to settle in. Jack wasnât supposed to answer but you couldnât call him to stop what he was doing. By the time you decide to call an Uber, Jack pulls up to the bar in a silver truck. He waves you over and you jump in,
âThanks for picking me up.â You say as you click your seatbelt on,
âYeah, glad I saw your call. Not sure if your dad wouldâve been able to help with how many drinks he had tonight.â
The car ride is short and quiet on the way back to your house. Jack makes small talk and asks about how your night went,
âI got to catch up with my best friend, dance a little bit, it was great.â You donât mention how you also spent all night thinking about him.
The car pulls into the driveway and Jack pulls the keys out of the ignition. Neither of you move and it doesnât look like anyone is planning to soon,
âWhy didnât you tell your dad about yesterday night?â Jack says as he breaks the silence,
âDidnât need the lecture from him. Plus he probably wouldâve made it a big deal for no reason,â You pout as you slouch back in your seat. Jack chuckles at the sight,
âDoes my dad talk about me?â you ask.
âHe doesâ A lot more than you realize,â You look at Jack in disbelief,
âI know you're going to NYU and you major in film. He talks about how youâre paying way too much to stay in a shoebox apartment there.â you huff at your dadâs choice of topics,
âYour dad sometimes talks about some of the guys youâre seeing there. Something about how theyâre not good enoughâ yâknow the usual dad talk.â Jack says,
âGood to know my secrets aren't safe with my own dad.â you mumble as you shake your head. There's a pause in conversation.
âYou said earlier that you had heard a lot of good things about me.âJack asks. You nod your head,
âYeah my dad sent some pictures of you two watching the game and stuff while I was away at college. Seems like you two get along well. He didnât mention how hot you were though.â Jackâs eyebrows raise at the last partâ liquor has made you bold and stubborn. The car goes quiet again and neither of you have moved still,
âLemme take a look at how your wound is healing,â You watch his eyes rake over your chest and down to your legs as you take your jacket off. Jack carefully grabs your wrist and pulls you close to examine. Your hands shake lightly as he analyzes your forearm,
âLooks good, It's healing perfectly.â He says lowly. You swallow nervously as Jack moves to flip your wrist back over, still holding your hand. His thumb draws small circles over the top of your hand, as if heâs thinking of his next move. He hesitantly brings your hand up to his lips, kissing it softly.Â
Jack has no idea whatâs gotten a hold of him. It was impulsive of him to kiss your hand but he wanted more so badly. You were his best friendâs daughter, someone half his age, someone who should be seeing other twenty something year olds. All the alarm bells in his head were going off and yet he wanted nothing more than to just kiss you there.Â
He looks up at your eyes anticipating some sort of hesitant look or fear. Instead, he was met with a similar lustful look that was telling him not to stop.Â
Jack brings your hand back up to his lips again and kisses your knuckles softly. He kisses the top of your hand before slowly moving his kisses up your arm. He can hear your shallow breath as he goes higher up your arm before stopping when he gets close to your shoulder. His face is inches apart from yours, he could kiss you right then and there,
âTell me to stop. Tell me you donât want this.â His voice is extra gravelly as he holds back,
âIf you stop, Iâm gonna be so fucking mad at you.â you say shaking your head,
âYouâre stubborn, you know that?â Jack says with a smirk,
âI think you like that.â you smile as you lean in first.
Your lips meet and Jack still hesitates. You grab the collar of his shirt and pull him closer, feeling him melt into your kiss finally. His hand reaches up to cup your cheek and pull you close towards him. The kiss becomes deeper and deeper before Jack pulls away and begins kissing down your neck with a similar ferocity. Jack notices your breathing getting heavier as he trails down your neck, stopping to bite lightly once he hears you whimper. He canât help but let out a groan, feeling his pants tighten at the sounds you make,
âBackseat, now.â Jack orders. You quickly shuffle towards the backseat and he follows you behind.Â
As he settles in the seat, you throw your leg over and straddle his lap. Jack pulls you back in for a kiss while you work to undo your top. His hands roam across your back, looking to help you pull it off. You grab at his shirt in an attempt to help him take it off in return.Â
Jack feels dizzy as he feels your hips grind against him. You moan into his mouth as you grind harder, wanting more and more. Jack moves his hand towards your core, pulling your panties to the side to find you drenched,
âFuck, babyâ youâre soaked,â He runs his finger up and down your slit, spreading your arousal around,
âYou get like this for all your dadâs friends? Hm?â you shake your head as your hips grind on his fingers,
âNo? Just me? Say it.â Jack says with a mocking tone. He watches you get more flustered before you bury your head into his neck whimpering,
âJust youâ only you,â Your breathing gets heavier as he draws small, slow circles on your clit,
âNeeded someone older to take care of you, huh? Is that right?â You nod your head against his letting out a needy moan,
âMore, Jack, wanna feel youâŚâÂ
âI know, pretty girl, Iâll give it to you. Be patient for me.â Jack fidgets with the zipper on his pants before pulling them down his thighs. His grip on your waist tightens as you sink down on his cock,
âAh, fuck,â Jack groans, intoxicated with your warmth. Your breath gets heavier as your eyes roll back,
âKeep your eyes on me, angel.â he growls as he feels you tighten around him. You struggle to keep your eyes on him as you move up and down. Jack canât get enough of how drunk you look on him,
âJackâ fuckâ feels so good,â you moan,
âLift your hips up a bit more for me,â Jack places his hands on the bottom of your ass to help support you. You drop back down, feeling him hit that spot perfectly,
âFuck me.â you whine,
âJust like that baby, donât stop,â Jack helps lift your ass up and down creating the perfect momentum,
âTell me how good it feels.â he growls,
âSo good, fuck, it feels sâgood,â you babble,
âPlease donât stop, Jack, Iâm gonna cum like thisâ fuck!â you feel your stomach tighten as you ride out your release,
âThatâs my good girl, keep riding me just like that.â Jack says as you ride out your high. The way you look at him with glossy, tear filled eyes pushes him past the edge. He grips your ass tightly helping you bounce up and down, groaning loudly at how tight you feel around him,
âBaby, Iâm gonnaââ Jack lets out a rough grunt as he releases into you and fills you up. He moans deeply as he lays his forehead on your shoulder, pressing a small kiss on it. He looks up to find you smiling already as you pull out,
âI wouldâve rather been in a bed for this.â Jack jokes as he tries to catch his breath,
âWe can do that next time.â
âSo there's a next time?â his eyebrows raise. You giggle as you jokingly hit his chest,

note: this is sooo insanely self indulgent and smth i thought out when i had a really cute outfit on this last weekend getting coffee + vinyl shopping LOL
the pittlings think the new nurse is so cool. sheâs the epitome of an it girl to them and they might be a little obsessed with her.
on victoriaâs rare days off, she runs into you at a cafe dressed in head to toe vintage. she swears sheâs seen your outfit on pinterest (and probably has it pinned too),
âiâm sorry, what are you doing here?â she asks as you grab your drink from the counter,
âoh, i was just out with my boyfriend! we just came from the record store down the street.â
âyou have a boyfriend?â victoria says with wide eyes,
âi meanâ not that you wouldnât, like who wouldnât wanna date you?â she awkwardly says. you laugh at her rambling before seeing jack walk through the door of the cafe. you wave your hand down at him and victoriaâs eyes get even wider than before,
âdoctor abbot? what are you doing here?â
âiâm here with my girlfriend.â he says, gesturing towards you. victoria laughs nervously as she pieces things together,
âwell, iâll see you tomorrow, javadi!â you say as you grab jackâs hand and walk out. sheâs in so much shock that she misses when the barista calls her name for her drink.
the next morning, victoria enters ptmc more excited than normal,
âwoah, how much caffeine have you had already, crash?â trinity says,
âyouâll never guess who i saw yesterday!â victoria starts before recalling her latest discovery,
âare you sure it was him and not just some other old guy?â dennis asks,
âi swear it was him. i saw him up close and they held hands!â victoria says, borderline frustrated that no one believes her.
âthereâs no way. i mean, with all due respect to doctor abbot, i donât know if heâs her type.â trinity scoffs. you wander past the group overhearing the last bit,
âwhoâs not her type?â you jump in,
âoh, nothing, crash was just saying this insane thing about running into you this weekend with doctor abbot?â trinity says as nonchalantly as possibleâ though her eyes look as if theyâre screaming for an answer from you,
âoh, yeah! we were just hanging out.â you say with a smile,
âasâŚ?â dennis tries to press on for more info. you slowly figure out what theyâre trying to ask you. were they talking about you not being jackâs type? you decide to play into it a bit,
âi think iâll let you guys figure that out.â you smirk at the three of them.
they watch you intently as you join jack in one of the trauma bays. he smiles sweetly as he sees you enter and watches as you get to work. trinity decides that this isnât over and turns to dennis,
âlet ahmad know weâre starting a bet. fifty bucks says theyâre just friends.â

Technically, Jack wasnât hiding anything from Robby. He wouldnât lie to his best friend, nor would he deny anything if Robby just asked, which he didnât,
âAnd when is this party happening?â Robby asks Victoria with his head tilted down and eyebrows raised,
âTonight at Doctor Abbotâs house. I-I wasnât sure if she invited you since you arenât her yâknowâŚâ Victoria isnât sure how to put you and Robbyâs relationship into words. Heâs your attending? Mentor? Situationship? None of them seemed to fit,
âWe arenât anything Javadi, thank you.â Victoria smiles awkwardly and takes the opportunity to leave the conversation while she can,
Surely it was an accident. There was no way that Jack or you would forget to invite Robby to your fellowship celebration party. Robby still credits himself as a big reason you were able to get into the fellowship in the first place, despite Jack essentially stealing you from him. He pulls his phone out to quickly ask him about it.
Were you going to tell me about the party youâre hosting for her?
Dana passes by as he hits send,
âDid you know about that party Jack was throwing tonight?â he asks her as he leans onto the desk,
âYeah, I just didnât think you would wanna go.â Dana says mindlessly as she shuffles through the papers on her desk. She looks up to see Robby's bitter smile,
âDonât get any bright ideas, Robinavitch. That girl worked hard and you arenât going to ruin her party just because youâre upset. Either you show up tonight with a smile on your face or you donât come at all.â Dana finds the form she was looking for and walks away.
Robby canât picture showing up tonight and spending most of the night standing on the sidelines while Jack parades you around. Heâll feel ridiculous knowing Jack was the one whose name was signed on your letter and not his. Robbyâs phone buzzes, snapping him out of his thoughts.
I didnât think you would wanna go.
Change of plans, he was going to show up tonight.
âË๨ৠâ.Ë
Robby shows up a little later than expected. It was nearing 9 PM but he was hoping a bottle of champagne would make up for it. He knocks on the door, standing awkwardly at the doorstep. He can hear music coming from the backyard and the occasional laughter. The door swings open to reveal you in a small pink dress. Your eyes widen at the sight of Robby,
âRobby! What are you doing here?â he can tell youâre already a little drunk from the red flush in your cheeks and slightly messy hair,
âIâm here to congratulate you.â Robby says, holding up the bottle towards you. You grab it from his hands,
âThank you.â you mutter,
âHey, you made it!â Dana says, approaching from behind. She puts her hands on your shoulders and gives him a warning glare as he welcomes himself in. You turn around to see Dana giving you a reassuring smile.
Thereâs a big âCongrats!â banner hung up in Jackâs kitchen, along with balloons on the floor and some stuck on the roof,
âHelp yourself to some food and drinks are in the fridge.â you tell him, stumbling around to open the fridge. Robby is quick to grab you and stabilize you,
âWoah, hey. Youâve had a lot already, huh?â he gives you that same familiar condescending smile. You feel your cheeks getting warmer as you regain balance,
âHey, didnât think you were gonna make it.â Jack says from behind Robby. He gives Robby a pat on the back as you hand him a beer,
âChange of plans.â He cracks open the can, walking outside to join the rest of the party. You notice Victoriaâs eyes widen from afar in surprise as he joins the rest of the residents and nurses,
âIâm sorry, I didnât know he was coming tonight.â Jack whispers in your ear. You give Jack a kiss on the cheek,
âItâs okay, itâll be fine.â you grab another drink from the fridge.
âË๨ৠâ.Ë
To say youâre freaking out is an understatement. From the second Robby walked in, it seemed like you only got drunker from there,
âCheers to PTMCâs future attending neurologist!â Trinity yells out as everyone stands with a small plastic shot glass. Robby and Jack stand together watching from afar as you swing the cup back. Jack smirks at the face you make as the liquor burns the back of your throat. Robby looks over and sees Jackâs expression,
âYou gonna let her work tomorrow with a hangover?â Robby asks,
âSheâs a big girl, she can handle it.â Jack says, keeping his eyes on you. Robby shakes his head laughing dryly, taking a sip from his drink,
âGood luck with that, her work gets sloppy when sheâs hungover.â Jack can sense Robbyâs attempts at getting under his skin. Even after all this time, Robby is still trying to find an opportunity to get you back,
âLike I said, she can handle it.â Jack says flatly.
âActually, do you wanna know why I think she can handle it?â Jack pauses and turns towards Robby,
âIt's because I trust her. I also respect her and Iâm not afraid to show that.â
âThe only reason you know that is because you went and changed her shifts without asking me.â Robby quickly responds.
The pair notice your attention shifting to them as they talk in the corner. You arenât able to make out their words but quickly forget about the sight when Mel pulls you for a picture.
âI didnât need to ask. Iâm also an attending in case you forgot.â Robby laughs.
âYou won, Jack, is that what you wanna hear?â Robby excuses himself and walks away back into the kitchen towards the fridge.
In Jackâs eyes, it was never about âwinningâ. It had always been about treating you rightâ no more standing by, watching Robby speak to you however he wants. Winning was the last thing on Jackâs mind especially after you had confessed that you were previously sleeping with Robby. His goal has always been to love you fully and with as much support as he could provide.
As Robby grabs another drink from the fridge, he hears you stumbling towards the washroom. You look like a newborn deer trying to learn to walk for the first time. Robby follows as you slowly make your way down a hallway. You trip and nearly fall until Robby catches you,
âI got you.â he says lifting you back up,
âThank you.â you try to keep yourself upright and stand as far away from him as possibleâ Itâs not much given, it's a tight hallway. He stares as you adjust your dress. Your hair is done differently than how it is at work and he also notices that you wear a different perfume now. You did your makeup a little differently too and notices a small tattoo possibly? Itâs almost frustrating to him how recognizable you were yet different you had become. You were no longer the same compliant, docile resident he trained and he hated it,
âYou look beautiful, by the way.â Robby says quietly. He hesitates for a second,
âIâve missed you.â It comes out awkwardly, like it was something he repeated in his head but had no intention of saying out loud,
âThank you.â you mumble.
Robby stands close to you but keeps his hands behind his backâ if he could, his hands would be on your cheeks, pulling you in slowly. Instead, Robby leans closer and closer to your lips. He doesnât plan on kissing you, but hopes youâll kiss him first. He wants to see that you still need him and prove that Jack isnât giving you what he thinks you need.
You step back a few steps before hitting the wall and stumbling again. Robby grabs your arms again, lifting you up,
âLooks like you still need me.â Robby mumbles jokingly. Though it comes off much more condescending than he usually intends,
âI donât need you anymore, Robby,â you say, shoving his chest as hard as you can. He stumbles back in surprise, hitting the other side of the hallway wall,
âIt was just a joke.â Robby laughs at your reaction.
Robby loved watching you get riled up at him. Any indication that you needed validation from him, he was taking from you. He was willing to keep pushing until he decided to give it to you,
âYeah, well it didnât feel like it.â you felt anger bubbling in your chest the longer you looked at his stupid, ego filled smile.
Meanwhile, Jack had been searching all over outside for you. You werenât with Trinity or Samira or any of the residents aroundâ Dana started helping search for you at some point. As he starts searching inside, he hears Robbyâs laugh first then your voice,
âI havenât needed you for a long time now. I didnât need you to get into my fellowship.â it comes out more obviously irritated this time and Robby smiles.
Jack knows itâs wrong to be eavesdropping. He trusts you wholeheartedly but he doesnât trust Robby and whatever ulterior motive he might have. He stands close by around a corner. Jack swears to himself that heâll give it a minute before he grabs you. He canât help but be curious to know where this might go,
âRight, and now you need Jack.â Robby retorts,
âThatâs different.â
âHow so? You went from one attending to the other. Does that make it any differentâ Robby scoffs,
âHe isnât a manipulative asshole for one.â Jack almost lets out a laugh as he overhears you,
âManipulative asshole?â Robby repeats laughing harder this time,
âI made you into one of the best residents, and an even better neuro fellowship candidate. Donât forget that when you come crawling back to me.â That's Jackâs cue to step in. He rounds the corner to see Robby towering over you,
âHey, there you are. Dana brought a cake for you.â You turn to look at Jack. He senses a feeling of relief from you and irritation from Robby. Jack puts his hand on the small of your back, leading you outside but not without glaring right at Robby.
Sat between Samira and Mel, you cut the small cake into slices and pass them out. As you pass another plate around,
âThis feels like a birthday party.â Trinity says,
âCakes are meant for celebrations, whatâs wrong with that?â Dana says, slapping her arm jokingly.
A pop! is heard from the corner as Princess holds another open bottle of champagne; itâs the bottle Robby brought, which doesnât go unnoticed by you. In the corner of your eye, you notice Robby standing by the backyard door. He stands with his body half inside and half outside, as if heâs teetering on staying. Jack thinks heâs overstayed his welcome and Robby agrees since the next time you look over, heâs already gone.
âË๨ৠâ.Ë
Jack sits beside you as he pulls the blanket over top. He smiles at the sight of you drunkenly looking up at him. Jack canât help but notice a small shift in your mood as he watches your smile turn into a pensive expression. He doesnât rush you to confess whatâs on your mind, he know itâll come out when youâre ready,
âWhat were you and Robby talking about earlier?â Jack gives you an uncomfortable smile. He knew the conversation was coming, he just thought it would be tomorrow morning over breakfast and not while you were drunk and half awake. He takes a deep breath,
âNothing really, I think he just misses you and doesnât know how to talk about it.â thereâs a pause,
âWhat were you and Robby talking about? Earlier by the bathroom.â you flash a similar uncomfortable smile to Jackâs question,
âYou heard that?â
âI was looking for you and I mightâve heard a bit.â The pitch of Jackâs voice goes higher towards the end of his sentence. You ponder Jackâs thoughts for a second,
âI donât know if he misses me. I think he might just miss controlling meâ having control over something really,â you say.
Jack walks to the other side of the bed, removing his leg and climbing in beside you. He pulls you close until your head is on his chest,
âYouâre not gonna leave me once Iâm at Westbridge, right?â you whisper,
âWhy do you ask?â Jack knows exactly why youâre asking. He knows Robby planted the idea in your head earlier and you havenât been able to shake it since,
âNo reason.â you mumble. Jack doesnât press on it.
âIâm not leaving. I fully expect you to come back and boss us around when we call neuro down. Donât think Iâm gonna go easy on you though.â The small laugh from you makes Jackâs chest swell.
The bedroom goes quiet and is soon filled with your soft snores. Jack lays wide awake, replaying the conversation he overheard between you and Robby. The more Jack thinks about it, he doesnât entirely agree with what you just said about Robby. Jack thinks the complete opposite of what you said. Yes, Robby lacks control over things in his life, but heâs more frustrated that he canât control who you fall in love with. Robby canât make you love him and he hates that so much that heâll take whatever you give him.
Jack feels himself spiraling more and more until your phone dings. He thinks itâs just Santos sending you pictures from tonight until another one goes off shortly after. He grabs your phone in hopes of turning it silent but sees itâs a text message from Robby.
I didnât get a chance to say it but congratulations.
Iâm proud of you. More than youâll ever know.
Jack stares at the phone for a second. Thereâs no other messages, no previous conversation. He swipes delete on the conversation and watches it disappear from your text history.
He feels you shuffle around and puts your phone down,
âWhoâs that?â you mumble half awake,
âJust Santos. Donât worry.â Jack kisses the top of your head as you fall back asleep.

âGood luck with that, her work gets sloppy when sheâs hungover.â Jack can sense Robbyâs attempts at getting under his skin.
Donât worry.â Jack kisses the top of your head as you fall back asleep.
i feel like jack would take every opportunity he could to brag about you to robby hehe and robby being the avoidant mf he is, would never say anything about it
a drabble/short fic following pretty little birds if you havenât read it already!
pairing: younger!fem!reader x jack abbot
contains: fluff, medical inaccuracies, more jealous robby
Jack would take every opportunity to acknowledge your achievements to Robby,
âShe got into the neurology fellowship at Westbridge. Her application was damn near flawless, I wouldâve been pissed if they didnât take her,â
Robby would bite his tongue listening to Jack brag about youâ all the more reason Jack continues to yap in his ear about it. Robby mindlessly swipes through the tablet as he continues on,
âIâm gonna take her out for lunch tomorrow to celebrate. Whatâs that Italian spot you were telling me about again?â
âCarlinoâs.â Robby would mumble as he and Jack walk to the next patient. Robby doesnât mention that he once brought you food from there and that your favourite was the vodka rigatoni.
if there was any hope Jack would trip up and youâd come running back to him, he was willing to take a chance. the following morning before your lunch with Jack, Robby tries to keep him for as long as possible as new traumas keep rolling in,
âAbbot! You got a sec?â Robby would call out as he rolls the gurney into the trauma room. Dana and Lena notice the way Jack drags his feet towards the room.
he was always willing to help anyone who came through the doors of PTMC, but he was starting to notice a pattern in Robby that morning. he silently told himself that this was the last trauma he tended to before he booked it out of work. he says his goodbyes quickly as he walks towards his locker, cursing Robby for keeping him an hour past when he shouldâve left.
he somehow manages to make it to lunch on time and with a bouquet of your favourite flowers. you stood outside the restaurant, trying to take cover from the blaring sun. the white sundress you wore complimented Jackâs white dress shirt perfectly. your eyes light up as you see him approach with the bouquet,
âCongratulations, sweetheart.â Jack says as he uses his free hand to wrap his hand around your waist and pull you in for a kiss,
âYou didnât have to!â you exclaim as he passes the flowers to you. you lean down to smell the bouquet, unable to contain your smile.
it feels freeing to be loved by him. he loves you out loud and not under certain settings and conditions. he wants the best for you and he doesnât hide it in side comments and disapproving stares.
âShe just got into one of the best medical fellowships in the city!â Jack tells the server as they pour you both another glass of champagne. thereâs a small slice of tiramisu served after for dessert.
you clink your glasses together and take a small sip. Jack takes his phone out as he finishes his sip,
âWait lemme take a picture of you.â he says. you hold your flowers and turn your plate to show the small slice of cake with âCongrats!â decor sticking out the top.
Jack smiles as he takes a few pictures of you. he quickly sends one to Robby,
Thanks for the recommendation. She loved it.
Jack considers this as revenge for keeping him longer this morning and for keeping her off the night shift for so long.
Robbyâs phone dings as he stand by the nurses desk. he opens it to see a picture of you glowing as you hold the bouquet. your smile is bright, full of life, different than anything heâs seen before. Dana leans over to take a look as she watches Robby stare at his phone,
âHa, someone finally put you in your place, Robinavitch.â she jokes.
because even if youâve tried the food from there, and Robby knows your favourite pasta by heartâ Jack was the one seated across from you, celebrating your success, and Robby was the one viewing the picture of it from the PTMC.

youâre out of breath and drenched by the time you reach the other end of the rooftop parking lot. you were supposed to clock in at 6 PMâ had your alarm gone offâ but now it was nearly 8 PM and you were rushing to get into PTMC. the torrential downpour didn't help as you only had your small canvas bag to cover your head from the rain. your lungs sting as you breathe in and out quickly, trying to catch your breath,
âPlease, câmonâŚâ you mutter as you rapidly press the elevator button. your phone buzzes again as Jack texts you for the millionth time that evening with all his texts along similar lines of,
Where are you?
Youâre late.
Are you okay?
Whatâs going on?
the doors finally open and youâre faced with Jack,
âWhere the hell have you been? I was about to drive over and check on you.â he looks relieved but his tone is full of concern,
âIâm sorry, my alarm didnât go off.â you enter the elevator dripping,
âMy alarm didnât go off? Are you serious?â Jack scoffs,
âYes, Jack, my alarm didnât go off this morning.â you reiterate again, this time with a snappier tone.
âYouâve gotta be kidding meâŚâ he mumbles,
âJust get some new scrubs and check in with Lena,â he leans over to quickly kiss the top of your head. the elevator doors open and the usual chaos of the ER welcomes you,
âLove you. Iâm glad youâre okay.â Jack says as he steps out first, heading back towards the ambulance bay. itâs quick but itâs a small reminder that he was more worried about your safety than upset that you were late.
despite the small gesture, the night doesnât stop there. right after you change into dry scrubs, Jack is quick to call you to an incoming trauma,
âJustin Andrews, twenty years old, got t-boned by a drunk driver. Looks like the windshield glass cut him openâ he was unconscious when we got there. Heart rate ninety-two, BP eighty over fifty.â one of the paramedics call out as they roll the gurney in. the other is applying pressure to the open wound,
âWhat about the other guy?â Ellis asks,
âHeâs right behind.â another set of paramedics come rolling through the doors with the second gurney,
âShen, stay here, I got the other guy.â Jack says as he moves towards the trauma room next door,
âLetâs start transfusing o-neg and page OR.â Ellis calls out. as you move to dial the OR, the patient suddenly flat lines.
everything moves so quickly youâre unable to process Shen moving to grab the defibrillator pads,
âClear!â he calls out. you see Mateo moving to recharge again as nothing changes. Shen tries again but still no change. you hear your named called by the attending, locking you back into reality,
âStart compressions,â you pass the phone to a nearby nurse and get into position,
âWhere the hell is ortho?â Shen asks. Jack watches from the other trauma room as Henderson intubates his patient,
âThey said theyâll send someone down, I donât know.â Shen curses under his breath in response. Ellis works to stop the bleeding while you compress down on the patient's chest. you let out a deep breath as he stabilizes, just in time for Ortho to come in. Jack walks back in, checking on everyone and the patient. you give him a quick nod as he walks back and your patient is rolled out.
you take a deep breath as you exit the trauma bay. itâs not long until Lena notices you and flags you down,
âCan you pick up a few more? You were late today and you gotta catch up somehow.â
âThank you for that reminder again.â your response comes off more sarcastic than intended but Lena doesnât care. she hands you a tablet and sends you on your way.
đŕ§
youâre a bit slower than usual that evening. by now you wouldâve had a handful of patients to look after but between being late today and the car accident trauma, youâve been dragging your feet. Shen catches up with you as close the curtain on your patient,
âHey, so since you were lateââ
âThank you, Shen, youâre only the hundredth person to remind me today.â you cut him off, glaring at the attending. he chuckles in response,
âWould you be able to let the dad of our car accident patient know that his son is in surgery? Heâs waiting with Kiara, one of the social workers.â you nod and pass him the tablet,
âThank you! Donât be late next time!â
you approach Kiara who stands in front of the closed door,
âDad is inside. I have to warn you, heâs a bit cathartic so he might not have the most logical thinking right now. Iâll be here and so will security in case anything escalates.â you smile and nod before entering the room. Kiara introduces herself first then introduces you,
âHi, Mr Andrews, Iâm one of the doctors who worked on your son. He was in critical condition when he came in but we were able to stabilize him and heâs headed up for surgery now.â you sit down on the chair across from him,
âSurgery? No one mentioned anything about surgery, can I see my son?â you already notice him beginning to get more irritated,ďżź
âIâve been in car accidents before and Iâve never needed surgery. Where is he?â
âIâm sorry, you canât see him right now. We needed to operate on him to make sure all the glass is removed and he heals properly.â he stands up suddenly, towering over you. in the corner of your eye, you notice Kiara flag security,
âHeâs just a kid, I didnât consent to him having surgery.â
âYou donât need to, heâs legally an adult.â you remain calm despite him getting more frustrated by the minute. he kicks the coffee table in anger before grabbing the plastic cup of water and throwing it against the wall.
from outside the small room, the yelling can be heard throughout the ER. Jack stops mid conversation with Lena as it gets louder by the second,
âThe hell is that?â Jack says, forgetting whatever he was saying previously,
âDad of the car accident patient is here. I think your girlfriend is handling it.â Lena says. she understands when he removes himself from the conversation without saying anything. as Jack is about to enter, the door suddenly flys open. security comes out with Mr Andrews in hand,
âLousy fucking doctors!â he yells out. Jack looks inside the room to see the table flipped over and chairs on their sides. you stand tall in the corner of the room but he can easily tell youâre terrified. he wants to hold you, make sure youâre safe and tell you itâs going to be okay. before he can even make eye contact with you, youâre already brushing past him and out of the door. Jack follows behind, quickly trying to catch up with you,
âYou have a second?â he walks alongside you, guiding you towards the empty staff room.
âAre you okay?â Jack starts,
âYeah, why wouldnât I be?â
âI donât know⌠You were late this morning, that dad was throwing shit around, you look like you havenât eaten either,â you take a deep breath, rubbing your hands on your temples as Jack lists every mental note heâs made of you that morning,
âWhy donât you take it easy? If you want, I have a drunk bride-to-be on a bachelorette trip to the ER? Sheâs in north twoââ you cut Jack off as you get more and more irritated,
âI donât need special treatment just because Iâm your girlfriend, Jack!â you say louder than intended. Jack takes a second before responding,
âHey, whatâs going on?â his voice is soft as he reaches his arms out and grabs your shoulders. you brush them off and you take a step back,
âNothing! Fuck, I just need you and everyone to get off my ass.â Jack stays quiet. he takes a deep breath in, thinking through his next words before continuing the conversation,
âGo take a break, get some air.â his tone is firm and steady,
âI donât need a fucking break.â you scoff,
âYes you do and I am telling you, as your attending, to go take a break.â the brief softness he had was gone. he was done with trying to speak gently with you as your boyfriend and now was instructing you as the shift attending.
Jack hated using his role against youâ he always viewed the two of you as equals but he knew you needed a breather. as you left the break room, he began doubting himself and how he spoke with you. was he being too hard on you? was he not being gentle enough? Jackâs not one to overthink but in that moment he couldnât help it, especially since he didnât know how to help you.
you practically ran towards the bathroom, locking yourself inside. you paced back and forth as much as you could in the small bathroom, taking deep breaths in and out. this entire night has been incredibly unkindâ you were practically begging to whoever was listening that your shift would just end. youâve got tough skin, you can handle the chaos of the ER, the pressure, the yelling, all of itâ tonight it just kept building though, and it hasnât stopped. your eyes weld up quick and before you know it, there are tears streaming down your face. you stop pacing as they fall, trying to wipe them away. your breath gets shallow as you try and swallow each sob that tries to escape. a loud pound at the door snaps you back into reality,
âYou okay in there?â you hear Jack call out,
âYeah, Iâll be out in a sec!â your voice cracks slightly as you wipe your face quickly. you splash some cold water on your face and turn to open the door,
âSorry, just needed a second.â you say with a big fake smile. he can see right through you but he isnât sure whether he should apologize or comfort you first. before Jack can make a decision, you squeeze past him and head back towards the nurses desk.
you donât stop moving after that. you pick up another three patients making sure to keep yourself as busy as possible. the adrenaline is keeping you from breaking down and if you keep moving now, you can deal with your tears later when youâre home. Jack feels his age especially when he canât keep up with you like this, or maybe youâve gotten too good at avoiding him tonight.
the morning shift rolls in and you continue to stay on your feet, even through handoffs,
â⌠GSW to the left shoulder, bullet went straight through, surgery wants to admit him overnight just in case,â you say as you pass the tablet to Mel. she does a quick wave to the patient before following you out,
âOkay, thatâs everyone. Have a good shift, Mel.â you say as you grab your things from the workstation,
âOh! Wait, donât you wanna say bye to Doctor Abbot?â she says motioning towards him as he walks out of the trauma bay. you look towards his direction and briefly make eye contact before looking back at Mel,
âNo itâs okay, Iâll see him next shift anyways.â she gives you an empathetic smile before you leave. usually you make an effort to say goodbye to everyone, but tonight your goal was to just get out quickly and hide under the covers of your bed.
the drive back to your apartment is silent, with the occasional sniffles of you trying to hold back more tears. you get home shortly after 9 AM and quickly jump in the shower. the hot water washes away most of the stress from the day and you finally feel your body relax. a loud knock on your door disrupts your attempts at destressing,
âComing!â you yell out. you begrudgingly open the door to see Jack at your doorstep. heâs got a bag of groceries in one hand and flowers in the other,
âWhat are you doing here?â
âWell, hello to you too.â he responds as he lets himself in. he already knows his way around as he drops the bag and flowers onto your countertop, pulling out a pot from your drawer cabinets. you shut the door and follow him to the kitchen,
âYou didnât answer my question.â Jack stops what heâs going and turns to face you,
âIâm trying to apologize. I know you were having a tough night and I think I was being too hard on you and Iâm sorry.â you give Jack a soft smile,
âNo, Iâm the one who should be sorry. Fuck, I was having a terrible day and I took it out on you. All I wanted was for one thing to go right but it kept getting worse and worse.â Jack pulls you in as you ramble on. you feel yourself melt in his arms and youâre suddenly forgetting everything that happened during your shift. he grabs your face to look at right into your eyes,
âYouâre going to go to bed and when you wake up, thereâs gonna be dinner ready for you.â his voice is soft and gentle,
âAnd we eat together?â you ask. he hums in agreement before giving you a small kiss,
âNow go to bed, Iâll be here when you wake up.â you walk towards your bedroom,
âShouldnât you also get some sleep?â
âWhen have I ever done that?â Jack quips. he blows you a kiss before you shut your door and climb into bed.
đŕ§
the apartment is quiet when you wake up. itâs a little after 3 PM and the light from outside is peaking through the sides of your blackout curtains. the smell from whatever Jack was cooking seeps into your room and you canât contain your smile. outside your bedroom door there are two plates on the kitchen table covered in tinfoil, along with the flowers he brought in a vase. in the living room, Jack has an arm over his eyes as he lays on your couch. he shuffles around, slowly waking up once he hears the door to your bedroom open. his ability to fall asleep anywhere combined with being a light sleeper is a habit he still hasnât shaken since his military days,
âGood morning.â he says as rubs his eyes. he moves to put his prosthetic back on after.
âHi.â you say, moving to sit beside him on the couch,
âSleep okay?â he asks as he kisses the top of your head. you nod as he leads you to the kitchen. Jack puts on some soft music in the background and lights a candle while you unwrap the tinfoil,
âWhere did you learn to cook like this?â you ask in awe of the perfectly cooked meal,
âIâve always been able to cook like this. I just haven't had anyone to cook it for since, yâknow.â you smile as he gestures to his plate.
âThank you again for everything, especially today.â you say as you reach your hand out to grab his.
âOf course. Iâd do anything for you.â Jack gives your hand a soft squeeze as means every bit of what he said.
note: i was as non descriptive as possible with the food so you can imagine it with whatever your favourite food is :â) enjoy!

sunday nights spent slow dancing to marvin gaye and jack talking about how lonely he's been his whole life until he met you.
swaying with you and looking in your eyes and smiling when you tell him you like this song. huffing a little laugh at your youth and telling you how you make him feel like that young man he used to be.
whispering how good he'd have treated you, and a part of him is sick because he's missed out on so much time with you. so many years lost. time that you weren't even born for. he's a melancholy old man, but he's yours <3
