He had no reason to pretend anymore. He's the Absolute God of Hyperdeath. He's whatever he wants to be, and has no need to diminish himself to anyone else. Unless there is someone he care so much about that he wants to show their friendship matters, even within the throes of godhood.

Asriel cares, Chara. He always cared, and he always will. Even without any capacity to fell love, you were the only person he still valued as a friend.

Rather than spend his final moments with Frisk and his family, he left it all behind to stand by you to the end.
