His parents met one day in Australia while his dad, Marlin, was there for a business trip, and while his mom, Coral, was there during her backpacking travels. It was a chance meeting for the two, and yet during their short time there, the couple got to know each other and eventually fell for one another. It was also during that short-time where his parents had then gotten hitched, and where they decided to stay in Australia and start a life there with each other.Â
During their first year of their marriage, it was mostly filled with Marlin and Coral familiarizing themselves and their new life together as a now married couple. But soon after that, the pair decided to try for their first child together, the couple wanting at least two children (A Marlin Jr. or a Coral Jr. as Marlin had once claimed they would name their first son or daughter). They made many attempts, but there would always be some kind of pregnancy complication or another, to the point where the first three times Coral fell pregnant, neither pregnancy barely lasted a whole term. It came to a point where their doctor had to inform them that maybe pregnancy wasnât an option for them and they might need to consider alternatives. Despite this, the couple was determined to have a child, and after discussing it over, they agreed to try one more time and if this next pregnancy didnât follow through, then theyâll look at the alternatives. And just like pervious times, Coral soon fell pregnant again. But unlike their past pregnancies, this one lasted the whole first trimester, then the second trimester, until nine months into the third trimester and their first and only child was finally born. A son. And though Marlin wanted to name him Marlin Jr., Coral had another name she really liked. Nemo.
As their one and only child, Nemo became the light of his parents eyes. He was loved and dotted on by the both of them, and though his parents had wished they couldâve given him a sibling or two so that way he wouldnât have to grow up as an only child, they decided not to risk it anymore and put their all onto giving their son the best childhood he could ever have.Â
Tragically, around the time time Nemo was eleven-yearâs-old, both he and his mom had gotten into a car accident. She had been driving them back home after spending the day at the beach (it had been an exclusively mother-and-son bonding day as his dad had to work and said for the pair to still go out and have fun together), and it was late in the evening when Coral stopped at a red light, three blocks away from their home. Once the light had changed green, she began to drive off, and as she did so another car turned from an intersection, running through a red lightâ heading straight towards them. Swerving, his mom didnât have much time to move out of the way before the other car struck them. From the impact, the glass shattered everywhere and the car tipped over, trapping the mother and son inside. Back at their home, Marlin received a phon call from a neighbor, informing him about the accident that happened and that he needed to go outside now. Marlin ran out of their home and down the few blocks before coming to a complete stop. There, he saw the unconscious bodies of his wife and son, being pulled out of their now destroyed vehicle by the paramedics and being placed against the stretcher. He demanded to know what happened and if both were alright, and though the two were still breathing the pair was in critical conditions and needed to be escorted to the hospital.
Coral passed away not long after arrival. The doctors tried to revive her, but it was too late, she had succumbed to her injuries and was gone. As for Nemo, he was still breathing, and the doctors focused on keeping him alive. There were many deep cuts and injuries surrounding his body, but the worst of them all was that of his right arm, as that was the side where the other car had hit them. His right arm was bleeding heavily from the deep cut running down through it and bones of his fingers were fractured. Fortunately, the damage hadnât been so severe to warrant an amputation, but a surgery still had to be made, and the doctors did warn Marlin that a scar would be left permanently. They also mentioned the possibility of his son having nerve damage on that arm and hand, suggesting that once Nemo was fully healed for him to get into physical therapy. And so, For over a week, Nemo was at the hospital. He had woken up a day after the accident, but was kept for any checkups in case anything else needed to be done. But once the doctors had given Marlin the okay to take his son back home, but for Nemo to come back after two weeks for another check up, the father and son pair went back home. But though his son was alive and breathing, things never was the same without Coral around.
Ever since the accident, his dad became a whole new person. Instead, of the fun loving dad who was excited about the new prospects of life for his son, now became the overly protective and terrified of the word dad. In fear of something similar like that car crash from happening, Marlin had taken his son out of public school and began homeschooling Nemo instead. He also forbad his son from going out on his own unless it was to the backyard and even then, Nemo had to be within his line of sight unless his dad would start freaking out in wondering where he was. And whenever Nemo did get the chance to leave his house, he always needed to have his dad with him. Marlin didnât leave his sonâs side nor subsided his over-protectiveness until Nemo was finally twelve. And even then, it wasnât the fact that his dad suddenly stopped acting paranoid, but rather it was around his sonâs twelfth birthday was when his dad announced that the two of them were moving away from Australia and back to his dadâs homeâ Echo Isle.Â
They moved away because his dad couldnât handle living in Australia for any longer and having the constant pain and reminder of his late wife. He also knew that a change of scenery might be good for him and his son, Nemo getting restless at being stuck at home even when he understood at his young age why his dad was the way he was now, And admittedly, Nemo didnât mind the change too, even if it meant leaving the place he grew up in, if moving away would make his dad less anxious and paranoid than so be it. And so, the pair moved to the Isle and has been living there ever since.
After his arm healed from the injuries he got from the accident, Nemo had to go through a lot of physical therapy just to be able to use his arm and hands again. He was told by the doctor that if he didnât, there was a chance of losing the ability to use his right arm altogether because of how severe his injuries had been. And boy, it was a tough for Nemo at first. It took him weeks just to be able to lift his arm up and even then, it shook like crazy because of how weak the muscles were. And his fingers? The broken bones had healed, but even to this day Nemo struggles to hold anything still with his right hand without it shaking like crazy or him accidentally dropping something. Thankfully, itâs not as bad as back when he was a kid, but there are times even now where his right hand wouldnât hold something without his fingers giving up and letting it fall.
By the time Nemo reached his teenager years, he was finally able to convince his dad to let up on the overly protectiveness and let him start going back to public school. Marlin was very reluctant to do so, but he knew he couldnât shelter his son away from the world forever and so he relented. But jumping back into the public school life hadnât been easy for Nemo. Not only did he still struggle with the usage of his right arm at times, but he hadnât spoken much to kids his age in a long time, and so Nemo had a stutter as well. His classmates found all of this funny, and some of them even began to tease him. Nemo hated it, but was determined to get through it and not let any bullies bring him down. Eventually, he found a group of friends to stick to and the rest of his high school life didnât turn out so bad.
Back when he use to live in Australia still, Nemo use to have a neighbor who had a daughter the same age as him. Her name was Darla Sherman, and letâs just say that back when they were kids, he wasnât always the most fondest of her. Not only did Darla bite him once back when the two were six on a playdate their momâs had them on, but the redhead would constantly refer to Nemo as her âfishyâ and was insistent that he was her best friend. In return, he would claim that they both werenât best friends, and would most often than not try to run away and hide from her. But she lived across from him, and Nemo saw Darla nearly every single day up (they even went to the same school and was in the same class together) until the accident happened. But after the accident, their interactions together had lessen, though his dad did let Darla come and visit Nemo inside his home. Admittedly, for as much as Nemo acted like he didnât want her around, having a familiar face who wasnât just his dad had helped keep him sane. So maybe he was sad about having to move away from Darla when he did, but Nemo would never admit that out loud. Who would have thought that years later, she would move to Echo herself and the pair would reunite and become friends again.Â
Nemo loves the water and swimming. It was the number one thing he use to do a lot with his mom because she loved to swim herself and she was the one who taught Nemo how. Of course, after the accident, he had to re-learn how to swim again due to his right arm, but for as much of a struggle that was, he persisted on through and learned again. He would never let his bad arm get in away of doing something he loved, and whenever Nemo did go for a swim, he always thinks about his mom and how she would never want him to stop just because she wasnât with him anymore.
Is actually wealthy but you wouldnât know it with how frugal and humble Nemo and his dad lives. See, Marlin is a software engineer and developer and has helped create many things, but because he was never one to live the flashy lifestyle even before the accident, to the eyes of the outside world, Marlin and his son were middle-class at best. This is how Marlin was able to afford to take his son out of school and even homeschool him by hiring a private tutor who came to their home instead, and as well as how he was able to pack up and move when it was decided. They live in a decent sized home, and Nemo in return never really goes on about how much money he actually has. Not like he keeps it a secret, because he would be honest about it if anyone asks, but as of now only his closes friends knows the truth.
Does not have a good track record when it comes to dating. Nemo has dated a few girls in the past, but with every relationship, there always seemed to be something missing about it. He never knew what the reason for that was because he liked all the girls he dated, but there never was that strong or intense feeling that his parents had when they first met or even how Darla sometimes feels whenever she really likes someone. It came to a point where Nemo wondered if it was because he was meeting all the wrong girls, and that he needed to meet some more until he felt something more than just a fleeting desire of likeness. Unfortunately, because of this, he came off as being uncaring and uninterested in his relationships, causing the breakups to not end so well and thus never hearing from any of those girls again.
Always wanted to travel the world. His mom use to do it before she settled down with his dad, and even Darla had experienced traveling to other places throughout the years the two of them have been apart. Sheâs even told Nemo many of her stories, all of them making Nemo jealous and longing for the day he could do so himself. But he wasnât sure how his dad would react to that. Sure, Marlin has let up on his overly protectiveness, and last winter break, he and his dad even went to England to visit his momâs parents, but Nemo didnât know if his dad would be okay if one day he were to actually go out there and travel. He wasnât sure if he even was ready to go and do that all on his own.
Doesnât have much of a stutter like he use to when he was younger. But does get tongue-tied a many times.
Though it has faded throughout the years, there is still a visible scar on his right arm.
Still has issues with his right arm and hand at times.
Despite some of the hardships he had to deal with, Nemo is still very much an energetic and open-minded kind of guy. Heâs never viewed the world as scary the way his dad did, knowing that for as much bad that happens there are equally enough good in it too. Of course, he getâs very nervous about a lot of things at times and would doubt himself if he doesnât think he could do something, but Nemo is willing to take risks if he has to and just try to live life to the fullest.
