                      lonnie’s chin dips in a halfhearted attempt to hide her own smirk, but it doubles as an attempt to display silent remorse— not for doing what she’s done, but for having kept her parents out of the loop. still… “it was jay and carlos. they barely even wanted to let me come.” she explains. which is definitely not to say that evie and mal would’ve been anymore agreeable, per se. they all have their reasons to steer clear of those who they don’t know, so well. “by the time i convinced them and we got you? it would’ve been past noon.” she doesn’t want to argue. she needs to move forward. “next time ben gets kidnapped, i promise to let you know.”

                  mal had tried to stay away from as many parents as she could. she knew most of them distrusted her, even after everything that had happened. some even hated her, namely those her mother had tried to curse all those years ago. but some parents were kind to her, and though mal would always be weary of them after the family day fiasco, she appreciated any kindness directed her way.

                  “ oh, it’s fine. really. i would doubt me too. “ she honestly still did a little bit. “ it’s nice to, uh, not have you hate me. “

                    mulan may not have been a villain kid, or a villain, but she had plenty of people doubt her. she’d never been able to make a match on her own, if she hadn’t helped save china, she was certain she and shang would have never gotten together. speaking of her husband, even he still doubted her sometimes, and they’d been married forever.

                    the tone of her mother’s voice pulls lonnie’s shoulders into a slouch, but she doesn’t let her gaze sink to the floor. no matter how badly she wants to. “i know that.” she replies, after a moment of thought. after such a large act of deception, choosing her words carefully is of paramount importance. “my friends needed me. ben needed me.” his name holds more weight than any other, coming from lonnie. it has since they were children. she only hopes her mother hears it. “he counts on me to keep him safe.”
