Legault: The Hurricane
[fifthfang] "Need a hand moving in? I can dust those rafters if you like."
"Za-za, Shuurga," Ayita said, evidently the only one of Anne's party who was unbothered by the heat and humidity. "If there's dust in the rafters, Anne will never try to reach it."
"Please," Danielle groaned, making a dramatic show of swooning against a wall. "We've been hauling crates of fabric all morning! I thought we'd only have to do this once, when she moved into Ishgard!"
"Why do you need another shop, again?" Trysia asked, balancing a box of bobbins atop a stack of crates and then pausing to mop her bangs out of her eyes. "I thought you were doing quite well with just the one in Ishgard. If anyone can even wear the clothes you make in this heat, I'll be floored."
"Well--" Anne wheezed, leaning an armful of rolled fabrics on the doorframe for a moment. "There's a discount on aetheryte fees for residents, and I've been spending quite a lot of time out here--"
"How did you even manage to get an apartment in Radz-at-Han?" Yvain asked, leaning an enormous picture frame safely against the back wall.
"Not like you're complaining," Lenn said. "I know you spotted a pretty girl at the East Bazaar, probably told her she has nice fingernails or something--"
"--shoulder blades, actually, but I digress--"
"If you wouldn't mind, Legault, that would be a big help," Anne called over the bickering. "Those crates ought to hold you, they look to be stacked well. And they're bottom-heavy, they won't tip."
---
“My pleasure.” Legault snagged one of the old towels that had been cushioning a particularly fragile crate, tucked it into his belt, and worked his way up the crates. He studied the last two layers critically, and nudged them over slightly before vaulting up onto one of the bare beams. “Hm,” Legault said thoughtfully, once he’d balanced and got his bearings. He glanced down below with a twist of his lips. “Ayita, it’s perhaps for the best that she didn’t. Danielle, would you move two steps to the right, please?”
A dagger flashed across the open ceiling, followed by a small but unpleasant squelch as it lodged in something invisible from the floor below. Legault peered down from the rafters. “There’s a number of miteling nests up here,” he explained.
isaaccecilbryant:
“I just had a thought strike me, that’s all. The truth is I know very little about my employer. At least with Lord Death I know he is for certain immune to anything that can sway a living mind or heart.” A God was a God, no matter how you sliced it, but no one knew what Aeon was, so he may be fallible or corruptible.
Legault reminded himself for the third time in this conversation that if he himself had seen morphs and dragons, it was not impossible that the kid in front of him had been face-to-face with something resembling the embodiment of Death.
“So the revised plan is: sneak in there,” he jerked his thumb over his shoulder at the towering manor house, “collect this corrupting jewel as quietly as possible, and deliver it post-haste to someone who can’t be corrupted by it, before either of us are. Is that right? You have an easy means of delivery?”

The good ol’ days…
My full piece for @fe-daggers!
isaaccecilbryant:
“The Centurions Cores don’t have an immediate effect, someone I know picked one up and was perfectly fine. Though, the time it takes to affect someone varies person to person.” Isaac explained, latching on to this path of the conversation and trying to let his irritation go. “For the length of time I’ll be holding it, I should be fine. As for whoever aids me on my quest, I really do plan to get it out of here immediately, so not enough time for madness to set in.”
A thought struck Isaac. Did Aeon have immunity to these things? Had he been handing over cursed artifacts and other items that drove a man to commit unspeakable horrors?
Suddenly Isaac squeaked. “…I think if I get that jewel extracted I will defy orders and hand it over to Lord Death instead.”
Lord Death.
Legault cast about in his memory. Such a name would surely be attached to someone, anyone he knew in his particular line of work. It was not. It was also vaguely ludicrous -- as if Hurricane wasn’t.
“You sound a little uncertain. Mind telling me why the sudden change of heart? It sounded urgent that you complete it as instructed just a moment ago.”
[fifthfang] The air in this unfamiliar country was still, and though there was the soft murmur of a river, it was of a black depth that a wise man would tread carefully near. Legault caught no other sound save his own soft tread over tumbled stones, and saw no living creatures, save one some yards hence, shrouded in a deep black that matched the river. He drew closer, with caution.
He’d have no memory of how he got here. Most didn’t. Death wouldn’t try to jog Legault’s memory. It may cause too much distress to his soul.
As Legault approached in the distance, Death faced towards him. His jaw dropped down mechanically and a plum of vapor rose from it. “You were played an unfair hand recently.” The words were slow and uneven in their sound.
“Care to talk a walk?”
Even a careful man like Legault had a hard time taking in the cold countenance of Death with equanimity. His flinch was nearly imperceptible, but there nonetheless.
“If I’m not trespassing, then it’d be rude to decline the invitation, mm?” he said, once he’d recovered his voice.
An unfair hand ... “I knew what I had signed up for when I took the position. Or thought I did. Times have changed.” He swallowed around a knot in his throat. “I doubt I can ask you for a redo on that one.”

Ending one life to save others. The answer was a telling one. He’d not specified any particular circumstance, but it would seem this man had one in his own mind already.
“All life is precious…” It was the kind of thing he would expect Asbel might say, the kind of thing he knew in principle to be true, but struggled to truly believe. Perhaps that is why he had walked the path he had and why his hands steeped red.
“Yes, I suppose you are right, in a sense.”
“It can be easy to forget. The first kill is hard. The next one’s easier, and the next easier again.” Physically, but also mentally; the stain never truly washed off, Legault had found. Living with death on his hands was a decision, and a choice.
“In the end, if you forget that, or if you stop questioning your motives and your choices, it puts you in the same category as the people you end. I guess some people would say that even that doesn’t matter. I don’t agree. Sometimes you can’t stand back and let things happen, and sometimes prison isn’t an option.”

“Yes, that is true. To say something is right is to merely say it aligns with one’s own beliefs. Though what is correct; what should and should not be done is also subjective in its own way.” Neither truly offered him an answer.
“ All life is precious. Ending one to save others? It’s never an easy call, even if sometimes it’s more obvious than others. If you didn’t have doubts, I think that’d be more of a worry than otherwise.”
“I cannot help but wonder… is the taking of another’s life ever the correct thing to do?”
“That’s a tough question. Well phrased, though. There’s a difference between it being right, and being correct.”
